The 2008 Ozzie Thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 06:45 AM) And how well has THAT decision worked out for the Bears? Not saying it would matter either way, but it clearly didn't help them, either. Ditka won when he had the greatest team ever and was bad when he had anything less. Woe to all those who continue to praise the coaching ability of Mike Ditka.

Your first place Chicago White Sox!
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 07:00 AM) I'm not getting too carried away, but the team has been fun to watch for the most part so far. :gosox2: I understand this point of view.... but if Danks (or someone) is a real #3, I have all I need to see to believe that they can hijack the division. I mean, there are enough guys with MLB success in this lineup to make you think they're going to score a ton of runs.

The OFFICIAL "I was wrong about Joe Crede" thread
QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 07:09 PM) You cannot be right or wrong about a player in 7 games. Thank you for playing. And there's something right about writing off a player before ANY games are played? That's what ST is, after all, zero real games. I think this thread's message is perfectly valid if it's directed specifically at the people who spent the entire ST yelling the inverse of it. Now, for people whose main point is that someone like Fields shouldnt be in AAA... i understand that, but you have to remember that he's still a prospect even considering those stats from last year. And this is a "win now" year, not a fact finding year. Frightening as it is, keep in mind that young Juan Uribe had better OBP years than Fields' 07. So with Josh you could actually still have a guy who might just end up panning out to be Uribe with LESS plate discipline, more power. and average defense. You have to admit that CAN happen, and you dont want that to happen in a "win now" year. Now Crede is a proven offensive and defensive commodity, and this is a "win now" year and a "win now" payroll. Again, the choice is Crede. Fields gets no worse in AAA. QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 08:35 PM) If Crede continues this ply, im 100% Happy with him here... but I dont think many people visioned him playing this way Probably true, but considering the fact that he was great in '06 and then got injured, i think people shouldnt have been as thoroughly dismissive of him in ST as they were. A Crede trade is what everyone got behind b/c it fits the description of a classic baseball-smart move. The beer swilling fan with mustache stays loyal to Crede. But even in that context you have to know better -- Fields still hasnt experienced much at the MLB level. Last yr he got little in the way of handling yourself in important baseball games.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 05:31 PM) That was a nice time for AJ's first strikeout of the season, because I think had he not he would've grounded into a DP and we wouldn't have had those nice 4 RBIs from Crede. true - ajp cant do wrong these days can he

Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!
I know the Fields posts are kind of misplaced, but people took a lot of free shots at Crede in ST, so it's time for some to face up to their words. He had a great '06 and then got hurt. Followed by an onslaught of doubt. I cant help wonder if SF is calling now and upping the ante. Probably too early for that. But I wonder how KW would negotiate continued winning and the need to fill still remaining holes. EDIT: yea, more misplaced stuff. i kno.

QUOTE (G&T @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) Pop out to Uribe for my clam. 1 out. I was the one who told Boers & Bernsie to look for the tape that had Offman calling Orton a splendid "gay manager" instead of "game manager." Well maybe i was one of many.

Racial History of Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 01:11 PM) According to emailers, Ozzie plays Latino's only. That's affirmative action right there, haha. Hilarious how the mike north types complained that Alexei was playing over Brian Anderson, when in truth they both should have been sitting in favor of the equal-opportunity-named "Carlos Quentin."

Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 04:49 PM) Swisher's offensive value takes a huge hit when you move him in from the outfield. You can usually find guys who can put up Swisher-type numbers and play 1B/DH, it's rare however that you find a centerfielder who can do what he can at the plate. It's a good point, but lets not forget Swisher's 2006 where he had 35 HR, again factoring in Oakland's park. with .372 OBP I just wonder if anyone would be willing to sit Konerko some if we had a proven speedy leadoff hitter. And could move Swisher to 1B. But it'll all be in theory until we have an extended slump from Paulie. Last year was down but he still drew a lot of walks.

Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!
who's that pitcher

Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 04:42 PM) Yes they will. It's actually not so insane to think that Swisher being lower in the order could be a better RBI guy than Konerko this year. His power stats last year in non-hitters park. The necessity of having Quentin and Swisher both play, and the need to get more speed on the team. The idea would only be worth exploring more, however, if there was actually a proven leadoff hitter in the equation instead of the unknown Owens.

Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!
god, it's like we're doing our 2008 "special" already in this game. setting up til the middle innings...i hope

Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!
QUOTE (Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 04:41 PM) Nah, lets just put Owens at 1B. Make the transition easier. First 1b ever to be able to field bunts himself and tag runners out

Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Apr 7, 2008 -> 04:37 PM) Wow, Thome and Konerko are killing this team right now. We're going to head into a phase where some people on this board are going to want Swisher at 1b and Owens in CF. It will at first be called the dumbest idea on earth, and then eventually (maybe not immediately).... one of Paul/Jim will be declared done and those people will not seem so dumb. I have saved us the need to watch all these games. Hey if we get Anderson in, with Swisher at 1b, we can have a 1b leadoff hitter.
-
Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!
good, Swisher has at least mediocre speed
-
Vazquez (0-1) vs. Blackburn (0-1): HOME OPENER!
semi-lol to crede/uribe haters (no i'm not including all people who wanted trades in that group, b/c that would in part include me)

Buehrle (0-0) vs. Verlander (0-0)- KEEP IT UP!!
it's sad that i even run it past my mind that AJ might hate him for some reason and not catch it on purpose. i'm aware that's pretty pathetic of me but hey it's AJ.

Carlos Quentin - Nick Swisher - Jermaine Dye
A big part of this is... can Alexei be a capable CF backup? Like to the point of being a dependable late inning replacement? We've seen a good arm from him, but will have to study what kind of angle he takes on balls. How much CF has he played in Cuba? If Alexei can handle that, no more Brian and Quentin can stay and platoon(at the very least). Remember that Jerry has value being up here as a pinch runner too.

So if we rattle off a win streak here...
If we keep winning with Quentin being a part of it, Swisher getting on base and handling CF.... I have to think lineup has to keep being Swish at the top and Quentin at LF. Now, Owens could come up here for Ramirez...but there'd be no point in doing that to your IF depth. I suppose he could come up here for BA, but he wouldnt be playing regularly anyway. So why have him up? keep BA as the defensive replacement. I like Owens, but I dont think he can come up unless something goes wrong. My question to all: can Owens be up here if he's not going to be an everyday guy?
