  1. jesus that ball 4 was the perfect pitch, right on the black knee high. GTFO ump.
  2. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 1, 2014 -> 05:48 PM) Franklin would not be on the Sox. They don't need more IF prospects. Compared to our infield prospects Franklin has a grade A pedigree. Marcus is playing all over the diamond at Charlotte, Micah is not even close to ready, and Sanchez they are probably going to give every shot to stick at SS. Franklin has mashed in the high minors and was a first round pick. Yea, he has floundered in MLB, but he's still young and with a prospect history way above any of our guys.
  3. I'm guessing they had something lined up with the Mariners but then Detroit got them involved in the Price talks and Franklin went to TB. Franklin would have been a decent fit in Chicago, guy you give 150 PA to in the next 40 odd games and see if he hits enough to come into next year as the starter. Seems like Marcus is bound for a super utility guy career.
  4. Viciedo can't even get the start against a lefty. Pathetic year from him, frustrating that this team can't seem to develop a position player in house. Or maybe they just weren't looking at the right type of guys under the previous regime. Who knows but Viciedo just the last in the line of promising young position players that for whatever reason stalled out around replacement level.
  5. Anyone know anything about Miguel Montero? He looks interesting. Could they fleece the Diamondbacks again?
  6. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 11:03 PM) Not without another year of enormous luck he isn't. A starting catcher can be got one of two ways as I see it, getting one of the Yankees young catchers as part of an Alexei deal, or signing Martin. Well it's a counting stat but as a regular he's been worth about 1 WAR (B and F) with the glove every year. OLIVER is pretty bullish on him. There is something there -- a good backup and solid emergency starter. A good team can carry his bat and he's cheap enough to where he shouldn't just be cast aside. Obviously the position is ripe for upgrade but so are some other areas.
  7. I wouldn't touch Melky with LDF's hand. He's a guy that was busted with PEDs (that funnily enough lined up to his best years) and that will be on the wrong side of 30 from day one. If he wasn't an obvious juicer it would be a slighter better move but there is way too much risk there and while a team like the Yankees (welcome home buddy; funny story one time when I was sitting in CF at Yankee Stadium Melky missed a ball right in front of us because he was bantering with the crowd and got booed after it happened badly) could easily take on the downside risk of a 6 year 75 million dollar deal, Chicago would be advised to stay far away. I don't really know who I would target in the offseason but things can change pretty rapidly for many teams and players that wouldn't even be on anyone's radar as trade bait get dealt time and time again. I will say that if Hahn pulls off a trade like Eaton for Santiago to shore up LF or 2B that would be a f***ing a trade. Right now obvious weaknesses (including some minor league depth if appropriate) are, in rough order: C LF 2B SP PEN DH Now, if Viciedo shows ANYTHING over the next 60 odd games maybe you consider making him the full time DH, or vast majority DH, but until then, hell no you look to trade him in the offseason or relegate him to the bench. Flowers, FWIW, seems to be a 1 or 1.5 WAR type catcher -- aka an excellent backup. Don't know how the Sox are going to get a catcher but it's a big concern imo. 2B only propped up by upper minors depth, MLB current talent is easily the worst of any position on the team, Beckham is a negative WAR player hitting like this, defense can't overcome a .268 OBP. SP the foundation is there up top and really they "only" need to find one good starter to have a fairly solid 1-5. Plus, Cooper. Ditto the PEN spend a little $$$ (10 million or so) and swing a trade for a solid setup guy mid season if necessary (hey, depth in the minors, hurray!). Hope health doesn't play up your plans. _____ Bottom line, this team isn't that far away but they need another good offseason. If this offseason is as good as last year's, they are 86-88 wins good.
  8. QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 08:11 PM) I'm ok with Danks. He gives you a chance to win. Take him out and this rotation sucks more. Yea, if by "chance to win" you mean "when you score 5 or more runs!" The point many are making is that John is still a 1 to 2 WAR pitcher, which is better than a turd. But there is no rush to move him. I'm more disappointed that there is seemingly no market for Beckham or Viciedo. Dunn remains to be seen.
  9. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 07:21 PM) Dunn will be moved (assuming the Sox don't go on a big winning streak). He has an .858 OPS in 300+ PAs this year. That is a lot better than most baseball players. Well his ops is down to 812 but by 2014 standards that's still pretty good.
  10. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 08:05 PM) I guess we will find out. Barring the miracle of trades, I just don't see why the Sox wouldnt . I was looking at Bacon and Semien's stats on baseball reference and there very very little difference between what Semien gave the Sox and what Bacon is doing now. Difference is Semien could be gaining valuable experience while giving the Sox literally the same production. Yea but other than getting Marcus more MLB experience (a worthy goal but not critical) there really isn't much upside to DFA Beckham. You're gonna eat the rest of his pro-rated salary and get nothing, not even salary relief or a A ball reliever, in return. Better to just put him waivers and hope some team claims him and you can work out a deal. If nobody claims him then just non-tender him in the offseason. Same thing applies to Dunn, except some team might acually bite on him.
  11. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 07:33 PM) Semien has a .813 OPS, which would be top 20 in the International League if he qualified, despite a BABIP 50 to 60 points his career average. His K & BB rates are both very strong and his ISO has actually improved this year. He's ready for a call-up by every metric but batting average, which again is depressed by bad luck. I'm sorry but Beckham flat out sucks and offers us nothing going forward as he will not be on this team in 2015. Now is the time to move on and give one of our THREE potential replacements a two month audition and hopefully get through some of their growing pains. Also, as bad as Semien was earlier this season, Beckham has somehow been worse despite years of "seasoning". Think about that for a minute and then us why we should give Beckham another month of at-bats. Good post. I kinda think they are playing service time games with Marcus and I don't really blame them this team is going nowhere in '14 and that extra year of control counts. Someone got a rundown on how close he is to super 2 ?
  12. QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 06:00 PM) this was a terrible deadline to be sellers at. I don't know for sure and don't care enough to look it up, but it sure feels like so many more prominent players (especially pitchers) were available at this deadline than at most (Samardjiza, Lester, Lackey, Price, Lee, Hammels, peavy). The fact of the matter is that Danks is an over paid average pitcher who doesn't have the same stuff he had pre-surgery. Furthermore, who in the world is actually going to give us something of value for beckham? He has barely been better than replacement level for the better part of 5 seasons now - that is who he is. Viciedo, while still young, is another guy who has barely been above replacement. He's not even an average defender, let alone one whose defensive impact trumps his offensive shortcomings. As for Dunn, another example of a guy who you simply can't trot out to play the field in the middle of a pennant race. That limits him to the 14 remaining AL teams, many of which who have DHs, or NL teams looking for a pinch hitter, and who is going to give anything of value especially at Dunn's price for a pinch hitter? De Aza - really, do i even need to say anything? The only hope to get something resembling a decent return (i.e. at least 1 legitimate prospect) was to package ~3 of the guys above and pick up an enormous amount of the salary. De Aza and Viciedo can be traded perhaps for more value in the offseason. Maybe they are waiting to see how Avi bounces back before making a decision on what the future OF will look like. Beckham should be DFA and I'm almost sure Dunn will get moved in a post-deadline trade.
  13. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) I know you're just being a clown, but I really think the better the Sox finish, the more attractive they are to FAs. Detroit is quietly down to 72% odds to make the playoffs on ESPN, that's not very good for a team that has been all in since the offseason and was well above 90% for most of the year coming into July. It's too bad the Sox aren't just a little better they could really put the pressure on them to win the division if they were 5 over instead of 3 under they would be right there.
  14. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 04:23 PM) Hi there. Minnesota Twins Texas Rangers Both at home. Fair enough, but it's not like the Sox are good enough to consider wins over anyone a given.
  15. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) he might be the best player in baseball but are his numbers that good that he should be the run away MVP with 2 months left in the season? Right now Abreu has a higher average and more home runs and RBI's. But since Trout has 10 SB and plays a good CF and plays for a better team with more money to spend makes him the runaway MVP?? Just doesn't make sense to me but I am just one guy If Jose continues at this pace he's going to finish with around a 320 average, 45 home runs, and 125 RBI with a slash like 320/380/630 If he does that, fine give him the MVP, but he still has some catching up to do on Trout. Trout has simply been worth more up to this point.
  16. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) Time to go on a run!! Hi: John Danks Hector Noesi Scott Carroll
  17. QUOTE (1dog @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 04:14 PM) He also leaves his foot on the bag too long after he catches the ball, looking like he's going to pull something. I'm not sure why anyone hasn't told him this. Watch some Mark Grace video, pronto. I was always taught, all the way through low level college, that you want to position your heel on the bag on most plays.
  18. Why does Jose have his entire foot on the bag? That's not the best technique in the world.
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 03:57 PM) Jeez, have a day Moises. Might have found a nice little bench piece in him, and he's really seemed to fit well into the clubhouse. It's a little frustrating that Viciedo continues to get the vast majority of the starts. Be better to find out more about what they have in Moises.
  20. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 03:51 PM) Sox bullpen ERA = 3.89 Addison Reed ERA = 3.95 So yeah, I can see how the Sox would be so many games better by adding a guy with a 3.95 ERA to a bullpen with a 3.89 ERA Not to mention Reed pitches in a kinder park and league.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) Trolls gonna troll Your response was kinder than mine.
  22. Once Garcia comes back Viciedo needs to be the odd man out no doubt. I wouldn't even play him over Moises.
  23. mlb.tv just s*** the bed on anyone else, damnit.
  24. PH Dunn Robin. This is a high leverage spot. edit: Conor works as well.
  25. adam eaton is the f***ing man.
