He's not likely to be a star, but he is def likely to be a useful pitcher. Lefty, control issues, but plenty of swing and miss, and in today's MLB if he can pitch 5 innings more often than not he's a starter.

It says they have to be on the 26 man. But can they assign a guy to AAA and just lose the MLB roster spot? Is their some "active" designation a player can get in addition to simply being on the roster?

See this isn't clear, it sounds like reading the rules that they could just "forfeit" carrying 26 guys at the big league level and assign him to AAA after or during or around or whatever the 90 days he was active on the MLB roster. I'd imagine this would be frowned upon by literally everybody and the Sox would never do it, but it would be interesting in a "tank" year.

That's the short of it. There's some exceptions and I'd love to see a club assign a guy to the minors and just lose the 26th man spot while avoiding the rule.

Growing up I loved Wilson Alvarez, coming up and pitching the wild no hitter as a kid was just magical. He never really did much of note in his career after that, but I still loved him. On the World Series team it was Torpedo Boat Uribe he was so fun to watch as a SS, strongest arm I've seen on the Sox. Recent years nobody really comes to mind too much. I kinda have a soft spot for Reylo for some reason.

The WAR chart says that 5 is basically the same as 10, but that 1-3 are valuable, by quite a bit more. We got the worst possible outcome really given the new rules.

One of the more lamentable things about being such a sad sack franchise is that (understandably) even the good players will get critiqued and labelled as "losers" at times. It's not fair, but it's predictable.

When he kicked the wall or whatever and missed a couple months was exactly when the Mariners went on their little run. He's got talent, he's also a complete head case. A team like the Braves can probably keep him fairly productive; I have no faith the Sox would be able to keep him healthy, let alone productive.

I'd draft him, how cares if he puts up -3 WAR, if there's a 5% chance he's a useful player take it. 2024 is sadly a throwaway year now so at least fill it with some intriguing players.

Good, keep clearing out dead wood. I'll say that given the s%*# sandwich he inherited so far Getz is doing the (straightforward) but necessary first steps to improve the overall state of things over the next few seasons.

Seems like a good deal for the Mets. The money doesn't even matter to them so they can just move on if he sucks. The White Sox would not do that.

it's a bit of a gamble, but Dylan seems pretty durable to me. TINSSAAPP and all that. Maybe there's like a 5% risk of significant value altering injury. I do think after reading @WestEddy's post that there probably are several good offers on the table right now and that it might just be better to move him now. Among other things you'd clear a 40 man spot and some salary, might allow getz (lol, yea right) to make a good move on the margins that wouldn't otherwise be there.
