Hopefully nobody unless it's an intriguing waiver guy. Keep the spot clear.

Why WAR is stupid for Closers, especially for Colome
chitownsportsfan replied to vilehoopster's topic in Pale Hose Talk
But why? OBP is purely a component of offensive value which is merely a component of overall value including defensive contribution and staying healthy (posting). That's why we have WAR. It combines all of those components and then calculates a player's relative value. Relative value is important as clearly baseball goes through different eras of production and a .350 OBP at the height of the silly ball era was a lot less impressive then during the dead ball era or the astroturf era. WAR allows us to contextualize contributions across every era. As for WHIP you're introducing a third element beyond a pitcher's control into your evaluation and that's the defense behind him. A good defense is going to save a hit or two every start over a poor one. Why should we credit the pitcher for having a great defense? Or punish him for having a poor one? That's why DIPS theory was invented and has evolved into SIERA and xFIP and other various defense independent metrics. -

JFC. -
His hamstring problems have lingered all year there's no reason to rush it that's how you turn into Chris Paul by 30. I bet he's back 10 days from today or possibly a week.

No kidding. And you're on the road for 5 months of the year and have the other 7 to make your home wherever the hell you want. He can have a penthouse in Chicago or the burbs for his family and then the rest of the year live sea side in SD or LA or whatever. Open the wallet and the FAs will come. Win the bidding, don't just be "competitive".

Game Thread 8/7/19 - Sox @ Detroit

He's doing his yearly "the Sox are 20 games back" time to start hitting thing and he'll finish with an OPS+ around 110, a WAR around 1.5 and everybody will be clamoring to bring back one of the "elite RBI guys in all of baseball". Awesome. Can't wait to watch every ball between 1st and 2nd roll into RF next year and fuck all our young pitchers. -

Ahem. I've been saying it was a good signing since he was pitching in march and the velocity was there. You can do a lot worse than Nova as your 5th starter in a rebuild year. And next year bringing him back as the 6th guy and swing man makes a lot of sense. His stats coming into this year suggested he could be a passable 5th starter and that's basically what he's been. If Hahn can do more work like this the Sox won't have to rely on shitty AAAA guys the next few years when injuries inevitably crop up again. -

The mariners have been doing more 6pm starts here and they did a session on it recently with the local sports radio station and a lot of parents really liked it. It limits the walkup you'd probably get from a bored after work crowd as people are just getting home around 6pm here, but for parents I can see it being a big deal getting the kids home and in bed by 10 instead of 11 or later. -

Overall I prefer it for sports viewing but for soccer and college football it can be worse. NFL Sundays are great the "late" game starts at 5 and you can get to bed at a decent hour after watching FB all day. NBA is also perfect the games usually start at 4-5 then the late games are on at 7pm. You'll like it out here the weather is probably the best in the country outside of SoCal and if you get the blues in winter the beaches of SD or Mexico are a $300 flight away. I usually try and get somewhere south for a week in February and I'm good. Springs can be a bit trying with the marine layers but it also keeps it nice and pleasant for most of summer. -

You have to wake up at 6AM here to catch some early starts in the European leagues, it's brutal. There's just something about sports that don't go well with the ass crack of dawn. CFB starts at 9AM here and that's bad too. You want to be able to enjoy your morning, laze around, then turn on the game imo. -

I've been on the Girardi train since he was let go in NY 2 years ago. He'd be the perfect fit. -

lol, that shit doesn't work at the MLB level. It's not about "knowing" it's about playing loose and with confidence but also being mentally sharp. It's a mental thing at this level and Ricky does not have a clue how to get his guys to perform at a high mental level on a daily basis. The Sox need to get away from babysitter style managers. It's not working. -

It's too early in the day for baseball. -
The Tigers are so fucked. People think we are fucked. At least we won in 2005 they are going on almost 40 years and they are going to be really bad for at least the next 4 years. Probably closer to 5-6. They have absolutely nothing more to trade for an almost all their good prospects are pitchers. Position player wise they are one of the worst in MLB.

8/6 | Sox @ Tigers GM1 | Cease vs Norris | 12:10pm CT
chitownsportsfan replied to Tnetennba's topic in 2019 Season in Review
Too bad the same growing pains Cease is having this year will be repeated with Kopech and Dunning next year. I just hope the Sox realize that with the right breaks 2020 can work out for them if they make additions in the offseason to fill the hole in RF and rotation. Need at least 2 SP and 2 good bats. -
And That's a White Sox Winner !!
chitownsportsfan replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I swear to god if the pitcher "win" was called anything but "win" people would let the fuck go much easier. The pitcher doesn't win the game he literally cannot by himself in the AL. So how about we give a win to whoever has the game winning RBI? That would at least make some sort of sense. It's a garbage stat and does not in any way describe a pitcher's contribution to a team.
