Shorter version of this thread: the leverage index on moves this offseason is through the fucking roof. This is the make or break offseason for the rebuild.

Yikes. Just heard about that. Jason is going to get himself in trouble one day. -

I've had the game on for 5 outs and I"m not sure Jason has talked about the game for more than 30 seconds. I get it it's the dog days of September but FFS. -
Sox fire Matt Lisle/Matt Lisle quits (?)

I believe all of that is true, which is why Hahn should have a hard time looking at himself in the mirror. He's the GM and he's cucked. -

Rick Hahn should be absolutely ashamed of himself. How does he even look himself in the mirror? @Look at Ray Ray Run and @Balta1701 I know we've talked about this with Hahn: he should be an analytics guy, right? Harvard law, U Mich before that. So he's either compromised his beliefs in order to draw a lifetime check from JR or he's not an analytics guy at all and just fronted as one for the fans. -
A team with their resources should never even consider a full tear down imo but it appears that may be the way they are headed. The problem the Sox will have trying to trade their way into contention is that most of their MiLB stars are already pencilled in for 2019+. This isn't like the Red Sox trading Moncada when they already had Devers. Sox have very little if any prospect depth, outside maybe OF, and most of those guys are still a couple years away. So that's part of the issue missing on Burger, Rutherford (so far) and then the injuries to the pitching. I don't really see a good fit for a trade with Boston or anybody really. It's going to come down to FA, and well, good luck.
-
Right. It doesn't scale linearly. The $/WAR calculation is helpful but it's not that precise applied on a case by case basis. In addition to the examples you provided It appears that the last few offseasons teams have been valuing 1.5 WAR guys as basically replacement level. Especially if they aren't a SS/CF/C. Which is partially why giving Jose a guaranteed 2nd year is crazy. Nobody else is likely to even consider it.
-
They had a bad process but it gave an OK result with the Manny and Harper sweepstakes as neither guy looks like he's anywhere close to a superstar going forward. That said the same process has led to horrible failures from Hahn time and time again when luck was not on his side. They have to do better this offseason.
-
He'd be the Sox' 2nd best position player this year and would have allowed the Sox to ease in Madrigal next year as a super sub and keep guys fresh. Oh well, ship be sailed.
-
I honestly forgot Rodon existed until seeing this.
-
There's way too many confounders to attribute his hot Septembers to a lack of pressure. Mostly I think it's just hitting against scrubs from AL central also-rans most years. Again, I"m mostly arguing a "Devil's Advocate" position here. And to reiterate I hope he gets hotter than shit in a pennant race next year.
-
This is crazy. Moncada has 4.6 fWAR. TA has 3.1. The team as a whole has 8.1 from the position players, including some awful negative fWAR performances. I tell you what in years that your SS and 3B put up a combined 8+ WAR you'd sure as fuck hope you'd find 10 or so WAR elsewhere, not .8. Yikes. This is simultaneously horrifying and hopeful for the rebuild.
-
I don't even really believe it but I'm hoping to put it to the test next September when the Sox are in a pennant race and Jose is hotter than shit.
-
He always turns it on when the Sox are 20+ games out in September. Maybe we'll finally put that theory about how he only hits when it doesn't matter to the test next year.
-
He's earned another year. This multi year extension talk is crazy. Especially for a guy that has said in so many ways he only wants to play for one team.
-
There are two separate parts to this: 1) Was/Is the rebuild the right decision, and 2) Was/Is this FO the ones to lead it? I think almost 100% of fans, here or otherwise, would agree that the rebuild was the right decision. Many less would agree that Hahn and Co. were the ones to lead it. As I posted last night the rebuild year gets a straight "C". It was the minimum required to show competency. Do better. There are elite teams in baseball with elite FOs. Minimal competency isn't going to get the job done. First exam is Free Agency. They need to ace it.

We have all the knowledge we need. Last winning season was in 2012. Team hasn't sniffed a division title in 15 years. Same guys in charge of that run are still in charge. So yea, as fans, we don't need to shove our head up the bull's ass to get a good look at the steak. We can just taste the steak, and know it's putrid.
-
Notice how in the quote he has nothing specific to note about Cooper other than "old school pitching mentality" then goes into specifics about how the analytics to performance guys are helping him. Faint praise imo for Cooper.
-
Same but it's hard to feel any good about it given how shit the league is and how far away they still are. 72 feels a helluva long way from 95-100, which is what appears it's going to take to compete for a title in the next 5 years. Overall, as of now, I'm giving the entirety of the season, including offseason, a straight C. It was the minimum expected to show competence in the rebuild. Emphasis on minimum. Onus is on them to show improvement.
-
Oh just wait until he gets that juiced ball. The comp was in overall impact as a SS prospect, not in play style, fwiw.

Reinsdorf assures Ron that Abreu will always be a White Sox
chitownsportsfan replied to Sockin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
One year with a vesting option and buyout makes a lot of sense. Something like 600 PA maybe and a 3 million dollar buyout on top of 1 year 12 million. Unless there's been a dramatic shift in how mid 30s DHs with good but not great bats are evaluated he should be more than happy with a deal like that. Frankly I feel like if the Sox don't make him an offer he's unlikely to even get that. -

I have an Ozzie Guillen autograph and a Jose Abreu autograph. That's it. Really doesn't change my feelings about either. I root for the laundry ya know? When Ozzie and Jose are no longer assets to the laundry I move on. Sentimentalism has little place in sports or life. Except perhaps for newspaper columnists and hagiographers. -
If you told me Jim was Greg I wouldn't bat an eye. They both have a lot of the same myopic viewpoints despite watching a shitload of Sox baseball. Good players can have weaknesses.

9/5 Sox@Indians gamethread
chitownsportsfan replied to Jack Parkman's topic in 2019 Season in Review
Well we should just him by the entirety of his season and by that measure he is the definition of inconsistent. Every player looks better when you cut out the bad parts of their year.
