QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 02:28 PM) When they interview the actual prisoners in shows like Lockup, they don’t exactly paint a rosy picture of being there. They make due with what they have to get by but I’ve never heard a single one say they actually like it there or want to be there. There’s a reason the criminals typically do everything they can to not get caught so they don’t have to go there. About the only time we really hear of someone wanting to be in jail is when they are having to deal with our health care system.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 03:26 PM) We don't punish businesses who accept a forged $20. Once we begin sorting which document they should have caught and which one they shouldn't the law becomes too murky. Plus with birth certificates there are no standards. Every location has a different design. Companies who have jobs that no one else wants, migrant farm jobs, processing sheds, basically all of ag, are always caught with more illegals. There are often times the only ones applying. Who is out the $20? Isn't it the business that accepted it?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 04:01 PM) This tells me that the Sox are looking at dealing a starting pitcher at the deadline. This tells me that the White Sox were at the end of trying with one of their other AAA options, and look, Rodriguez was released.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) Any word on if Sanchez will stay up? I assume we will wait until Thursday to make a move. Have to think Hahn is exploring trade options Has to depend on Alexei's health.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 01:53 PM) But you can't have everything, and losing Melo derby means the bulls for the 4th straight year are entering season without a 2nd shot creator unless a gift is sent to us. That has been the single biggest killer preventing this team, and it still isn't addressed. But maybe the spacing improving and some semblance of a real derrick rose would be enough. Let's be completely honest though...the lack of a 2nd shot creator has hurt the Bulls but they've still managed to be a playoff team when their first shot creator has been lost for 3 seasons. In 2011 I think I was willing to buy that the Bulls could get by without a 2nd main ball handler and shot creator if they just added some better shooting and improved their spacing. I'm still not sure that's wrong because we haven't seen the team on the floor with its first shot creator. If I really wanted to push it, the fact that the Bulls have remained playoff teams and not averaged 45 points per game after replacing Rose with Nate Robinson et al. for the last 3 years might well make a decent case that the thing killing them hasn't been not having a 2nd shot creator but not having their first. What did people say after their playoff loss last year, it wasn't that they needed an extra shot creator, it was that they needed actual shooting.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 01:52 PM) The games are way too long. Priority one should be trying to speed up the game from pitch to pitch. So much time is just wasted, and it turns everything into a 3 hour game. The game time has reportedly been up this season but it seems to have very little to do with replay most of the time. I am noticing that the time it takes to get the replay call seems to be going down as the season goes on. However that is not changing the game lengths.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 01:50 PM) I was more going towards actual anecdotes about what happened in the clubhouse. I don't remember seeing a single specific story. Glittering generalities, sure. There was the one about "someone" coming in and putting all the games on college football after a bad loss and Ozzie getting pissed off because they didn't seem to care about the loss that I think was tied to AJ.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) Hitting for power is a very large portion of offensive value, especially when you are slugging .630. Worth noting that Abreu seems to potentially be becoming a better hitter as the season goes on as well (although the injuries and the games he shouldn't have been playing in may have hurt him the first 2 months). There's obviously some sample size/BABIP issues particularly in July, but let's just do batting average month by month: .270 April .241 May .313 June .360 July

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 12:27 PM) The quality of the player matters though too. Ramirez is not the defensive player he was 2-3 years ago and his offense hasn't gotten any better (or worse, for that matter). He may be the best SS on the market, but that doesn't immediately make him worth a top 25-50 prospect or two top 100 prospects. Peavy was coming off a very good season and he hadn't pitched poorly leading up to his trade last year either. Again, I'm not saying they have to deal Ramirez, but I think you have to be more willing to deal him than you are suggesting. Well I'm not going to be. I'll be disappointed unless the return is something along those lines and a fair amount better than the return for Peavy.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:54 AM) That's not how price is determined, though. How many teams are involved + how badly the teams need to fill a hole + quality of available prospects on the teams involved + number and quality of other options available on the market + how attitudes and prices have changed regarding prospects and veterans = what he's "worth." My opinion is that he's "worth" a Peavy-deal, but that has nothing to do with how he compares to Peavy, that's just a good proxy for the amount of prospect talent I'm referring to. But you're missing a huge portion of the equation there...how badly team needs to move payroll, what team has coming up behind it, what state team is for duration of player's contract. The White Sox clearly needed to move Jake Peavy's $15 million, they had no use for him this year, they thought they had a guy who could replace him until EJ completely blew up, and there was at the time virtually no chance of fielding a competitive team before his contract ends. None of those are true with Ramirez. The Sox can afford his contract, he's still useful to them, there's no clear-cut "ready to replace him right now" candidate, and it's entirely possible that they'll be fielding a competitive team before his contract ends. Thus the White Sox should also be in a position to hold out for a higher price or decide not to move him at all. If they don't move him I will not be mad. If they didn't move Peavy I'd have been very mad.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:51 AM) I don't think he's worth that -- I understand you want to hold out for an overpay, but I think we should be willing to move him for fair market value. I think that is fair market value.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) I think Rick Hahn does though. I think we're overvaluing Alexei a bit on here. I'm not saying they don't have the right to ask for a lot, but even if not all of the guys pan out, the Sox got a great return for Peavy last year and I'd gladly take a similar package again. Alexei ought to be quite a bit higher priced than Peavy. Signed for an extra year as a team option, less expensive, putting up ~ equal value in the advanced statistic world.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:44 AM) so - rose sits out, and kirk has one of his 11 injuries a season - who plays guard? Just a guess - they genuinely think, after Nate Robinson and DJ Augustin, that they can find a 3rd PG off the scrap heap if needed and have him succeed in Thibs's setup. That might not be wrong either.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) What'd you think of my proposal then? I'm not familiar enough with any of the names other than Maurer to be able to honestly comment without research that I don't have time to do right now.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) And he's white, so they are the same player. These Adam Morrison comparisons have to stop. If McDermott fails, the fact that Adam Morrison failed too has nothing to do with his career. I didn't bring it up so I'll happily drop it if we can get an equal agreement to not say that the summer league performance proves anything one way or the other.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) I think a Samardzija like return is asking for too much unless the Sox package another player with him. The Cubs traded Shark and Hammel to get Russell (plus those other pieces, which are nothing to be scoffed at). Also, Alexei Ramriez is 32 years old. He turns 33 by the end of the season. Samardzija is 29 and doesn't turn 30 till the offseason. Maybe if the Sox included someone like Gillaspie they could get that return, but that's about it. I also have no problem with a Peavy-esque return for Ramirez whatsoever. That's fine, if we don't get a top 10 in MLB prospect that's ok, but if we can't get somewhere in the range of top 25-ish or couple top-100 then I don't have any good reason to listen.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:09 AM) No, but it should put the next Adam Morrison thing to sleep. But it won't. I understand that. I actually think some people would rather the team they supposedly root for suck. If Gary Harris or someone else someone on this board wanted instead of trading up for McDermott, tossed in 31 yesterday, I'm pretty sure it would have been pointed out how the Bulls totally blew it. We all know that. In the 2006 summer league, Morrison put up 25 ppg, shot >90% from the FT line, etc. Actually scored at a higher rate per game/per minute than McDermott has done so far.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) Hinrich better not be getting the BAE. I really want Augustin or Sessions and they need to find a way to get them in at that price. We can't have Kirk as our primary back-up. If the organization hasn't learned that we can't just rely on Rose being healthy, then good grief. Problem is they may have learned a different lesson too. "If Rose gets hurt we can pick up a PG off the scrap heap and still win >45 games so why should we spend money on anyone as insurance for that scenario"?

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 10:29 AM) I like the team. They're fun to watch, for me. Should be a lot more fun this year The very fact that there isn't a BS manufactured super team this year will almost certainly have me watching more games, but I'm going to be pessimistic unless #1 convinces me not to be.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 10:23 AM) The next top of the line in his prime free agent the Bulls sign will be the first. If you or they are counting on making cap space in the future to sign these types, you and they are only kidding themselves. Rarely do these types even move. Fraschilla said Mirotic would have been top 4 in this draft and says right now he is a young Turkoglu. McBuckets scored 31 in a summer league game. It's totally downplayed. That is 2 lottery picks in this draft where most of complainers thought the Bulls should tank to get a lottery pick. Yet they complain when they trade their 2 picks to get a lottery pick. Rose is coming back. Gasol put up 20 with 19 boards agains the Defensive Player of the Year last year. Pardon me while I think that more than offsets the loss of DJ Augustin. The Bulls weren't going to get Melo and unless they totally gut their roster, no shot at Love. Be realistic. This team won 48, added 2 lottery picks, a 26 year old former MVP, and a possible HOFer with some gas left in the tank. That's not bad. The Heat isn't going to be the Heat. The Bulls, health provided, have a decent shot at the finals. I could legitimately disagree with some of those, some of those are valid comebacks...but the bolded is on another level. Seriously, you actually wrote that without laughing?
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 09:49 AM) Exactly. Unless Colorado puts Tulo on the market, Alexei is by far the best SS that is available, and if teams aren't willing to pay accordingly then there is absolutely no reason to deal him. Whatever we get back ought to be good enough that when we hear Carlos Sanchez is the starting SS for next season, we say "ok".
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 08:35 AM) Man, the guard play on this roster is going to be atrocious. So basically all the SGs on their roster are either PG's or SF's slightly out of position right?
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 09:24 AM) Not even remotely close. IMO, the best case scenario for Alexei is the Jake Peavy-esque return from last year -- one back-end top 100 guy and a handful of interesting flyers. Then he shouldn't be traded.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 13, 2014 -> 05:57 PM) I hope DJ realizes that the Bulls basically saved his career and that he'd fit in way better in our system than anywhere else. It really depends on the type of person he is. The other way to think about it is that if he has a legit, couple million dollar offer from someone else, he ought to take that and run with it.
