Desperate times call for...three bold moves
Balta1701 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 12, 2013 -> 01:38 PM) That's not true at all. How do you rebuild this team around Ramirez in order to win 90 games? Put the entire roster through another intensive fundamentals based spring training. They don't sleep until they hit a cutoff man. That got the team to 85 wins last year on its own. Find a bat that Marty doesn't want (since Marty thought adding Hamilton would have been a great idea last offseason). -

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 12, 2013 -> 01:31 PM) Alexei Ramirez is not going to be the SS on the next Sox playoff team. I'm surprised you disagree. Why are you surprised I'd disagree? I'm not surprised one iota that you'd disagree. The Sox could have a 10 game lead in the division and you'd think the solution is to trade Alexei Ramirez. -

So let's see...the Sox are losing games because of poor, sloppy, ineffective defense. The solution...the Sox should take the guy leading the team in defensive WAR, trade him for scraps, take a guy who is a legitimately solid 2b, move him to a position he hasn't played in 5 years, and viola...success! -
He was originally hired to oversee player development in October, 2007. He was promoted to vice president and assistant general manager by Hahn last fall.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 11, 2013 -> 09:34 PM) He is not a leadoff hitter never was. Bullplop. .350 OBP last year, right where he needed to be. -

BHam's win streak ends at 11 in a row.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ May 11, 2013 -> 09:22 PM) Saladino and Keenyn Walker each stole 2 bases, each now have 14 SB on the year. Trayce Thompson is 2/4, RBI, BB, 9th stolen base. Of course, I'm in the audience and they face a minor league pitcher and they look terrible. They play against a guy on a rehab stint, and they tear it up.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 09:26 PM) Let Flowers continue to play this year and just get rid of him this offseason. There's nothing good that can come from sending him to AAA and HOPING that he can contribute at this level. This is correct. If you're going to bring Phegley up, do so in July when the season's clearly been bobbled away like "every single ball put in play against us". -

I see our usual defense has shown up tonight. One of these games we're going to have more errors than hits. -
Strasburg gives up 1 baserunner through 4 and the Cubs have dropped 4 unearned on him in the 5th.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 03:14 PM) NL hasn't seen him though, so I think he'll actually do quite well. Getting to face the pitcher should help him a lot as well. Yeah...if he's got a problem, it's that he'll lose his focus and his control mid-inning and it winds up with a big inning. If 1/3 of those get shut down because he hits an 8th or 9th hitter who is useless...that could prevent the big inning and let him start fresh and focused the next time out.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 11, 2013 -> 03:13 PM) BS. They take more infield and outfield and do more drills than any other team. Guys don't drop balls, or boot balls, or overthrow the cutoff man or forget to cover home on a passed ball, or try to backhand a pitch 2 feet to their left because of the manager. This is a systemic problem. As Ozzie used to point out, players should know how to play when they get to the major leagues. White Sox prospects for years have looked like they just took up the game a few weeks prior to their call up. Whatever it was that changed...these same exact players were doing exactly what they should be doing for 5 months of last year. It's the only reason the team came out and stayed in first place so long; they didn't shoot themselves in the foot every game. The players repeatedly gave credit to their extra fielding and fundamentals work in ST for that and I think they're right. Those same players this year look like they have the baseball IQ of 14 year olds. The same person I gave all the credit last year for getting those guys into shape is getting my blame.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 11, 2013 -> 02:56 PM) How do you know how Robin deals with players? I love how everyone thinks if a guy isn't ranting and raving he doesn't care and has no control. There are all different kimds of leaders. Robin by all accounts from people who actually know, happens to be one. The fact that the players are continuing to struggle with basic fundamentals, seemingly nothing happens in response...and the team itself continues making mistakes that should have been fixed in February...is at the very least disconcerting regarding his current leadership techniques.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 12:01 PM) Gotchya. Point still stands. Actually, Rodriguez is probably an excellent comparison for how little the Sox should actually expect back for Peavy. Bunch of guys who have contributed little to not at all, and maybe 1 guy who could turn into something useful but who needs a lot of time to develop.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:47 AM) Tavares are you serious? Sorry, meant to write Wandy Rodriguez, wrong name came out there.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:36 AM) Alexei Ramirez is single-handedly keeping White Sox attendance up? Lamenting the loss of Carlos Lee, are you kidding me?? They did exactly what you want us to do with guys like Pence and Tavares. And the end result has been...55 win seasons. It's an incredibly beautiful example of the end result of your plan to give everyone away.

QUOTE (flavum @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:34 AM) What I would do... Keep Chris Sale and Hector Santiago Since they aren't going to compete in 2013 or 2014, try to make good deals with the rest of the roster--not necessarily trading all of them, but listen on anyone else on the roster, and try to build a winner for 2015. Hopefully over the next couple years, some of the players the Sox drafted come along, Erik Johnson, Scott Snodgress, Chris Bassitt, Chris Beck, Micah Johnson, of course Courtney Hawkins, Trayce Thompson, Keenyn Walker....and then further along some of the international signings they made last year get in the system and produce some fruit. In my opinion, it's time for the Sox to take their medicine for a couple years (not five). Keep in mind this will be five years without the postseason, and the Sox are a coin flip away from not making the postseason since 2005. So whatever they've been doing hasn't worked. As far as the front office, I'm not down on Hahn yet. It's an incomplete grade at the point. I wish Kenny Williams would leave the organization, so there's a clear decision maker in Hahn. And of course Ventura will be out after 2013 or 2014. I'm hoping he steps aside after this season. Why on Earth people have already concluded the White Sox can't be competitive in 2014 is beyond me. They have $30 million+ coming off the books already if they don't move anyone and they're loaded with pitching. I'm getting to the point of agreeing about Ventura though.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:34 AM) Who do you not trade from this team and why? Right now? nobody. It's bleeping May 11th.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:32 AM) I'm not familiar with what the Houston Astros are doing. What is the reason for the Sox to keep the few players of value they have. Specifically the older players, Rios, Peavy, and Ramirez? They're selling off every piece with any trade value, removing all of their big contracts, saving as much money as possible by moving bad deals like Carlos Lee for scraps, losing every single year, winning 55 games a year, cutting their attendance to 1.6 million last year, cutting their payroll to $20 million this year, and winding up with a borderline top 10 system after more than half a decade of losing. You know, exactly what your post wants the White Sox to do.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:27 AM) Like I said, I do not give one damn about the Houston Astros. Odd that you keep bring them up though. Yes, it is definitely odd that I'd bring up the Astros after other people already had made several posts about them. Definitely weird and confusing of me.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) I could not give one damn about the Houston Astros. The Chicago White Sox have 1 playoff win in 7 years following whatever you would call this half-assed strategy they've been using. And the team you are trying to pattern off of has 0 playoff wins in 7 years and in exchange for that is borderline top 10 in their minor league system. It's an awesome plan!

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:05 AM) what is arias? Random inexplicable media obsession #47.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:16 AM) Well . . . 1 playoff victory in seven years. Still a helluva lot better than the Astros. And yet people pretend that is somehow a positive result.
