  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 16, 2013 -> 11:34 AM) Why not? Automakers are putting all kinds of stuff in cars...why can't they do this? One downside is that making these things work doesn't appear to be cheap. One brief check finds that the cost of operating one of those ignition interlocks for 1 year is on the order of $1000-$2000. Maybe they'd get cheaper if they were mandated on every vehicle, but there are a variety of safety devices we don't mandate in vehicles because of costs on that level. For 250 million cars, that's a cost of a couple hundred billion dollars. The costs associated with DUI per year are on the order of $100 billion from this estimate...so maybe it works out, but either way, that's not a cheap step.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 16, 2013 -> 11:27 AM) People are never going to stop driving drunk. People got drunk during prohibition. Acting like any laws put in place will stop the repeat offenders is just ignorant. I don't think the solution is punishment. I think that if there is a solution it's to be proactive. Governments and businesses make a fortune on people drinking in this country. They ought to be able/willing to establish and provide services for people to get home. IMO, it would actually help their business; I could have an extra drink or two if I had a safe way to get home provided by the business that didn't involve me struggling to figure out where my car was the next day.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 16, 2013 -> 11:05 AM) This is starting to feel an awful lot like another discussion. Because every time this sort of event happens, nothing changes. People die, people get angry, occasionally enforcement tactics change, but there is never any step taken to actually break the link between going out to one's local restaurant/bar establishments, supporting those businesses, and the need to get home afterwards.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 16, 2013 -> 11:00 AM) Then stop at 1 or 2. The point is that everyone knows their limit and getting beyond that is a willful choice. So you're content with the status quo? Because clearly telling everyone to enforce this on their own and then jailing 1% of the people who don't listen works, right?
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 16, 2013 -> 10:36 AM) Don't you lose all menal stability after 3 beers and turn into a beer pounding pile of masculinity who drives home and just DESTROYS some p****? No...but your decision making might be impaired enough to decide you can order that 4th or 5th drink and still drive home.
  6. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 16, 2013 -> 10:04 AM) That's completely moronic. People being "too drunk to realize they are too drunk to drive" is completely asinine. When you've had ten beers, you know you shouldn't be driving. When you're hammered, you know it. You still make that choice. I've done it. Not proud of it, but I've done it. I've also realized the entire time I was driving that if I were to get pulled over I'd be completely f***ed. I don't do it anymore, but I have. And I also knew what I was doing was wrong. EDIT AND STUPID It's not an excuse, it's incredibly moronic, and as long as we pretend "Saying don't do it!" with more bleeped out words or even lowering the BAC would solve that problem...nothing will change.
  7. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 16, 2013 -> 10:00 AM) Never mind the record $625 million offer, a $490 million arena deal and a fantastic ownership group in Seattle. But there's much more public money involved in the proposed deal for Sacramento than there is for Seattle.
  8. QUOTE (Lillian @ May 16, 2013 -> 09:50 AM) I didn't know that he was just 16. What position does he play? What is the "scouting report" on him? He plays whatever position you want him to play. He's 16. What is worth knowing is that he's 6'3" 225 at age 16 and impressed scouts by hitting the ball out of the ballpark while taking BP. He's 16. He hasn't played much in the way of organized games or had serious coaching, but 6'3" 225 and a power stroke is fairly projectable.
  9. QUOTE (Lillian @ May 16, 2013 -> 06:55 AM) Does he bat left handed? Why does this matter? You can predict with certainty that when this kid, who is currently 16 years old, is ready in probably 6-7 years, the White Sox lineup will be RH dominant?
  10. QUOTE (Jake @ May 15, 2013 -> 09:45 PM) This will be a great series next year. Add Rose, Deng, Hinrich and this thing is a lot more fun. Except the bench needs replaced...again. And that's if they pay the tax and keep Boozer.
  11. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 15, 2013 -> 06:33 PM) Pretty much my thoughts as well...but something tells me the Bulls have one last good game in them... If they had Deng and Hinrich I'd agree...I just can't imagine these guys being anything but completely exhausted right now.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 15, 2013 -> 06:25 PM) Bulls worth taking a chance on at +14 tonight? I wouldn't bet on this game. It's either going to be really close or a blowout, and the blowout is much more likely.
  13. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 15, 2013 -> 05:38 PM) You know if he is as valuable as you say, he should bring quite the return in a trade. Ramirez is not going to be part of the core that brings the Sox their next post-season team. Too old, declining. Here's the problem with saying the same thing over and over and over and never backing it up. Reality sometimes intrudes. 3 days ago Alexei had an OPS close to .600 and yeah, you could say he's declining. It'd be bullplop because it's 100 at bats, but a person insisting on it could say that. He just went 8/12 against the Twins. Now his numbers are quite a bit better than last year. Career OBP is .316 and he's now at .317, career .276 average and he's hitting .284 now. OPS is below his career number, but it's now 30 points better than 2012. So, based on the same standard you used 2 days ago to declare he's declining, Alexei is now improving on his 2012 results.
  14. QUOTE (flavum @ May 15, 2013 -> 04:13 PM) It's nice they can fly to California with a positive feeling. Only 2 in the lineup without hits today are Wise and Giminez.
  15. QUOTE (Jake @ May 15, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 36m Adam Dunn said Sunday he had blown up his hitting mechanics, altered position of his hands. HR Tuesday, another today, among two hits. Mechanics apparently weren't the only thing he blew up.
  16. QUOTE (flavum @ May 15, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) Viciedo--May 14- May 30, 2012 16 games 64 PA 15 R 28 H 2 2B 8 HR 23 RBI .444/.453/.857 After that...100 games .238/.295/.409 I'm happy he's hot, but I'm hoping for a good June too. In that time Viciedo took 1 walk. In the last 6 days, he's taken 5.
  17. QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 15, 2013 -> 02:54 PM) I think he is a shell of himself. Konerko's gotten off to starts like this before.
  18. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ May 15, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) It's on WGN, doesn't that mean the entire nation can watch this game on TV anyway? I have very little TV available in my office.
  19. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ May 15, 2013 -> 02:05 PM) We'll see. He had a good run about 2 weeks ago, slumped again for a week, made another adjustment or two and now is hitting well again. I think this may be the pattern for him this season. Hopefully he can extend the "runs of good hitting" just a little bit more.
