QUOTE (fathom @ May 2, 2013 -> 03:58 PM) Can we please retroactively trade Sergio Santos for Travis Wood? He's now 5th in the NL in WHIP and 7th in ERA. I'll be happy to bet you that he will put up numbers significantly worse than that by the end of the year.

Gavin Floyd to DL - Out 14-19 months for TJ Surgery

QUOTE (Cali @ May 2, 2013 -> 03:55 PM) Well if he is out for the season, it's certainly his last in a White Sox uniform. So if he comes back it'll be with someone else. If he's as happy with the Sox as he's said, he might well be willing to take a minimum salary deal or a minor league deal next year to come back and work with Cooper trying to recover from TJS. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 2, 2013 -> 01:57 PM) This is my POV. He can play plenty during a week as a super-utility guy. And maybe that would force Robin to actually rest some people before they get hurt.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 2, 2013 -> 01:59 PM) Anyone actually have what the average numbers are for each spot in rotation? I'll bet his numbers all come in under "average" for a 5th starter. Here's a version from 2006, here's a done-slightly-different version for 2012. (And of course, Gavin is pitching in a park with some heavy ballpark effects as well). -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 2, 2013 -> 01:38 PM) My problem is it looks like the ball is barely moving, you can clearly see the stitches on the ball. If she is taking a selfie and a homerun is hit over the green monster next to her head, you would think the ball would look like a blur How fast is the exposure when using instagram on an iphone?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:49 AM) A few years ago Illinois changed the rules and allowed multiple electricity resellers to come in instead of everyone having to buy from ComEd. Woodridge has done something similar. The cities/towns/villages are acting like single-payers to get a better rate through volume. Electricity is just another utility service like water or garbage collection. (As long as Medicare doesn't do that. Because Freedom!)

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:50 AM) FWIW this has happened before with gas companies and turning off people's heat around here. IIRC four or five years ago a 90+ year old man froze to death in Indiana because his gas was turned off after several months of non-payment. Yeah, we had a thread on it here at ST. I'm sure you and I posted in it, that's what I was referencing.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:47 AM) Speaking of electricity, apparently I've been chosen to participate in an "electric aggregation" program, whatever the hell that means. The Village I live in has signed a one year deal with another electric company whose rates are approx. 20% less than ComEd. I also have the option to pay slightly more and the company will buy Renewable Energy Certificates to cover 100% of my electricity usage. I don't really understand how or why the Village or the electric company are doing this. Guessing that they're getting lower rates by negotiating for rates as a group rather than as a series of individuals?

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:44 AM) Yeah, if you have bad credit or a history of not paying your bill... I think in the southwest and the south, where there is a lot of menial labor and a cash economy, as well as big swings in utility bills because of the oppressive summer heat and the mild winter temps, some lower income folks struggle with it. All right...well let me put it this way, the only thing I have a problem with is the actual turning the power off if that's done in an inappropriate way...because 90% of the time that'll go fine and then occasionally you'll kill someone. The "occasionally killing someone from heatstroke/freezing" is the part that the utility pulling the plug on people would need to proactively avoid. How they do that is up to them, but overall, I'm very much a fan of smart meters and wider deployment of them.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:42 AM) I've seen it said that a lot of research careers just won't start now because of the sequester. I'm in that boat and trying to survive it. If I wasn't good with money or my postdoc didn't give my wife health insurance coverage, academia would have lost me.

Beckham out 6-8 weeks with fractured hamate bone

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:40 AM) 1.) If Keppinger is benched against righties, who bats second? Alexei or Beckham? 2.) Do we go to four on the bench? 3.) Which OF sticks with the team on the bench? Wells, Wise or Danks? 1. Gillaspie 2. Yes, 3 on the bench is a difficult situation to sustain for more than short bursts. People need rest. 3. Wise unless he's too banged up to go. Wise, Giminez, Sanchez/other OF, Gillaspie/Kep isn't a bad bench. -
I just submitted my first research grant proposal with me as principal investigator. Shame it'll probably die this year thanks to the sequester.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 1, 2013 -> 11:07 PM) You use your smartphone, or you don't wait until you actually use up all your money? The benefit is you don't have to pay large deposits. Consumers also seem to enjoy having the ability to track and control their spending better. The analogy used by the power companies is usually to gasoline in your car...would you want to pay for electricity similarly to how you pay for gasoline? Apparently consumers in prepay programs use 10% less power on average... People pay large deposits? Is that something heavy users or businesses do? I've known that there were some pre-pay options but never felt a need to do anything about it since my electric bill doesn't change all that much from month to month.

Like the game thread said in the 2nd inning, it's a shame we gave Sale $30 million before figuring out if he'd be able to pitch this year. What a bum.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:20 AM) The good news is that Gillaspie should be cheap the next two years, so even if Keppinger is overpaid, your net cost for a platoon at 3B should be reasonable. We really need Keppinger to get it going though. His K % is nearly double his career average, he's yet to draw a single walk, and he's shown zero pop so far (not that I was expected much). I wonder if Keppinger is having any lingering effects from that offseason injury, because the contact issues are so out of character for him. Take a look at his BABIP. That'll turn "normal" at some point this season if he keeps getting AB's. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:25 AM) You never hear about insurance covering players' salary. If teams do recoup some of that salary, they sure as hell don't let their fanbase know as much, they prefer to play the "Woe is us" card. You heard about it a lot with Peavy's last deal. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ May 1, 2013 -> 09:39 PM) Pay as you go electricity....good or bad? Define it?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 1, 2013 -> 09:10 PM) Red Sox got a great deal on that "renegotiated" contract. 18-8 and the surprise team of the AL, with the Angels most disappointing. Really, you can say on may 1 that he'll stay healthy the rest of the year to make that a great deal?
-
QUOTE (Cali @ May 1, 2013 -> 08:50 PM) Glad the Sox decided that they didn't need to wait and see how Sale looked after his first full season in the rotation before they signed him long-term... Verlander had an ERA over 5 in 2008. I bet the Tigers wish they'd released him then, right?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2013 -> 05:36 PM) Especially as a reliever, you get figured out. It is a very volatile field. I don't think he got figured out, I think he lost any consistent release point and that's murdered his control.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 1, 2013 -> 04:53 PM) I don't think it's any more or less acceptable, but I feel like our society, for whatever reason, believes lesbianism to be more understood. Martina Navratilova came out more than 30 years ago at like the peak of her career. It's really a matter of gender differences. I believe I read somewhere that Billie Jean King and Navratilova were outed, not that they came out on their own (could have just been the case for one of them, not sure).
