  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 24, 2012 -> 10:18 PM) Seems to me he becomes a favorite of all managers. He started for the Yankees for quite a spell, didn't he? Then he was our starter. I don't mind the guy, I just wish we'd get some new bodies out on the field. Deweezy to me is a symbol of the fact we ain't gonna win the division. He actually got less playing time than I thought he got, now that I look at their lineups. He started 15 games over 4 months for the Yankees, and that was in large part because Brett Gardner got hurt very early in the season, and that moved Wise into the primary backup OF role. But even with that, the Yankees generally went with Ibanez, Granderson, Swisher, and Jones/Nix as their starters over Wise. You heard about him playing because of that game he pitched and because he got basically sidelined after they traded for Ichiro. He started 38 games for the White Sox in less than 2 months and 15 games for the Yankees over 4 months. He's a tolerable backup, but if he's starting 38 games for you, it's because several guys got hurt and your bench is very thin, and you might want to start looking at trading for an actual starting OF.
  2. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Nov 25, 2012 -> 12:33 AM) I think there was plenty of speculation about some of those guys before they did actually get caught . I don't think anyone was buying what Roger Clemens was selling, for example. I would be stunned if some of the names that made it out of the game without getting caught were indeed clean. I don't think I guessed that Clemens was dirty until Mitchell nailed his badly shrunken b***s to the wall.
  3. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Nov 24, 2012 -> 06:00 PM) I hate agreeing with you. I don't believe they would have went thru the SEC, Pac-12 or Big 12 with an undefeated record, but they deserve to be where they are. If they win tonight, then they'll get the chance to prove it.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 24, 2012 -> 03:28 PM) He had an OPS of 1.000 for his first 9 games, 8 of which were starts. In his final 36 games, 30 of which were starts, his OPS was .617. You can do all sorts of cherry picking through his games to find small decent stretches and longer, terrible stretches. The reason DeWayne Wise has stuck around the game long enough is that he is dependable enough to use on the bench because he can play 3 OF positions, hit for a bit of power, and run the bases pretty well. The reason he's only been given the starting job once - unjustly, I might add - is because he's simply not that good. You play him when you need him. That's his job as a 4th outfielder. So basically...use him like a backup...play him when someone could use a day off or gets hurt, and if he has a few good games in a row and the guy in front of him somewhere has been struggling for a while, give him some extra starts. If that's how he gets used, I'm game for it. I still get nervous though...because even with changes in management...this is still the franchise that decided he needed to not only be the opening day starter, but also lead off.
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 24, 2012 -> 02:15 PM) I wouldn't touch Bowe or Mendenhall with a 10-foot pole right now Pitt is facing Cleveland this week and their run defense is in the bottom third of the league, and they're running out their 3rd string QB, so if they're going to make a dent, they're going to have to run the ball.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 15, 2011 -> 02:00 PM) That just isn't true. A significant firm went down, people will end up being prosecuted, count on it. So yeah, I wasn't posting for the actual MF Global downfallaversary. Happy 1 full year of staying out of jail despite stealing a few billion dollars!
  7. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 24, 2012 -> 12:49 PM) It was non-binding, anyway Yeah, but had that option been on the ballot and statehood had won, it would have been much more interesting. You can't suggest that the non-binding vote was indicating a desire to change the current relationship when the status quo wasn't a given choice.
  8. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 17, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) More interesting points are Puerto Rico voting to become a state and parts of Arizona wishing to break away and become their own state. Puerto Rico didn't "Vote to become a state", FWIW: they were given 2 choices, statehood or a move away from the U.S. The Status Quo was not an option on the ballot.
  9. QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 24, 2012 -> 12:30 PM) Any possibility that this is due to DeAza health issues we haven't heard about yet? I gotta think they'd have been looking for a more reliable option than Wise if they were worried about ADA. Wise may be a tolerable backup and a guy that other people like to have around, but I can't believe they'd make the mistake of thinking he's a starter again.
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 04:39 PM) what channel is Creighton/Wisconsin? For me, it shows up at 10:00 p.m. on ESPN2.
  11. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 03:51 PM) Yes. Throwing out the challenge flag on a to or touchdown has happened almost every week, it's ridiculous. If it could happen yesterday, it can happen any day. Like you said, it nearly cost the Falcons last weekend.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 03:32 PM) Oh, we were at a restaurant here, not anybody's house. As long as you were driving, great.
  13. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 03:11 PM) It should be penalty, but not negate the automatic review. They'll very likely change the rule to exactly this next offseason. I can't imagine anyone would have guessed that the coaches would know the rule so poorly when they wrote the rule, but there you go.
  14. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 03:06 PM) Schwartz is an idiot. Also the NFL is overreacting here. Its not very hard to understand the rule of "automatic challenge". I can see why they would have written the rule the way they did when they were making the replays automatic on turnovers and scoring plays. They're helping the coaches out, the coaches need to know the rules. In hindsight now though, you gotta change it to something like a fine when you do that, you can't decide entire football games on a coach forgetting that he only should throw a flag on a non-scoring play.
  15. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 02:52 PM) He's ALIVE! Sometimes even your #2 poster needs a break/breather. Edit: and you have no idea how much work I've gotten done...
  16. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Nov 22, 2012 -> 01:25 PM) With Hahn at the helm, I would not be surprised that the organization uses more statistical analysis than ever in making roster decisions. AJ = 2.6 WAR in 479 at-bats TFlo = 1.0 WAR in 136 at-bats Extrapolating out Flowers' WAR to AJ's playing time = 3.5 WAR. Just saying. And that was with AJ having his best year ever and with Flowers' not ever getting in a routine because of limited at-bats. The advanced stats really like Flowers. Of course, the problem with projecting that out to a full year is that Flowers up up a .905 OPS against lefties and .586 against righties...splits like that are tolerable as a backup, but 400 PA's against righties with a .586 OPS would be kinda brutal.
  17. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 02:44 PM) Yeah, highway access that serves as a parking lot. Chicago traffic can be absolutely brutal. In recent years I've covered Fenway and both of the LA Ballparks in addition to the Cell. Traffic to the LA ones was terrible, took 3x as long as any ride I've ever taken to or from the Cell, and the public transit options were worse. Fenway, a few rich people drove, but everyone else arrived by public transit. I just don't feel like traffic to the Cell, even on a very busy day, was any worse than any other place I've been. I get that any of it is annoying, but if it's not an impediment to seeing the Angels
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 12:11 PM) Yep. Traffic wouldn't be a problem worth mentioning if they had a team that made the playoffs more than once since 2006. Is ChiSox traffic really that much worse than every other ballpark? I mean, they have as good of highway access as anywhere. Street traffic to get to the highways is annoying but it's only a couple blocks, and, barring construction/renovation, there is solid public transit access as well.
  19. QUOTE (staxx @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 02:27 PM) Minus the 50 game suspension Melky Cabrera had a breakout year almost certainly for the same reason he got a 50 game suspension.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 21, 2012 -> 09:36 AM) After a pretty good showing in the AFL, Santos Rodriguez was added to the 40-man roster by the Sox. I'll be surprised if he doesn't make the show next year, assuming he's not traded. Always a use for lefty arms in the bullpen.
  21. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 20, 2012 -> 12:45 PM) Big News From Mars? Rover Scientists Mum For Now Just FWIW, we can't figure out what this might be. SAM can give some interesting data but none of us can figure out what groin-grabbingly amazing result they might have gotten out that would justify this level of hype... Which makes me at least concerned that they're overhyping a result that won't be easily communicated to the public. But if nothing else, I'll be in Grotz's talk on Monday the 3rd and I'll let y'all know.
  22. QUOTE (QuickJones81 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 12:55 PM) Yep, unfulfilled promises big time for this guy, but he's not too far gone that somebody might not catch lightning in a bottle given the right coach and the right situation. Brandon Wood = Dallas McPherson. Big numbers inflated by the Pacific Coast League.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 01:28 AM) Maybe Dweezy is a late late bloomer and he'll have a Melky Cabrera type year. I certainly hope Wise won't have a Melky Cabrera type year.
  24. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 01:01 PM) And I never disagreed with the points you are making here. I disagree that given enough money a parent doesn't need to be, or should even feel bad about, not being their for his kids. No doubt, money can make it better. But it still doesn't replace 6 and a half months away a year away from his kids if they chose to live in another country or four months a year if they are in the same house. If those things were that important to M-56, then he shouldn't have taken a contract where it was obvious from the start he was going to get traded, no matter how many lies they told to him about keeping him.
