QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 02:25 PM) I'm not condoning it but I'm sure as hell happy bored Mr. Holmes has to worry about it every day the rest of his pathetic life. I'm not pointing fingers at Balta, not that he'd care if I did, but I think sometimes people have too much empathy for these pathological bastards. Seriously I wish great harm upon Holmes for all the lives he ruined. I don't want him raped in jail but for him to realize that if he ever gets put in the general population that he'll be raped and beaten ... that's awesome. It's awesome to think he'll be afraid of Bubba raping him, just like the fear he put in all those INNOCENT people in the movie theatre. That bastard. I am sickened by the fact that you would be happy about rape. It viscerally disgusts me. I do not care one iota what your excuse is. It should not happen in our country. It is absolutely pathetic. and there is zero defense for wanting it or condoning it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 01:04 PM) A significant number do in Illinois. Almost 15,000 in 2010. That number includes 760 PE teachers. Seriously paying a PE teacher over $100k? This is one of the biggest problems I have with the way teachers aren't compensated in this country. I honestly thing the average salary is fine. But why do we pay based on years served instead of what they teach? Why do we pay a PE teacher the same as an advanced math teacher? Maybe if we paid them based on their worth, instead of years of service, we would get better candidates. Can anyone think of anything those PE teachers might also do after school that could result in those salaries?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 02:17 PM) Here comes the national media love fest, the Democratic convention. No longer do the media pundits have to act interested (a little bit at least) in what the evil Republicans have to say. The media pundits don't have to sneer and look for any misplaced sentences anymore. Ah, their beloved Democrats hit the big stage. Here comes the (second) lovefest with Obama and Michelle. The least the Prez could do is throw a shoutout to his White Sox again during his speech. The pundits do face a problem in one area, however. They are not big on war and acts of violence so they may not want to dwell on Obama's impressive missions to seek and destroy evildoers. And they can't point to his doing anything positive of note in the homeland since the economy sucks. And they certainly can't point to his leadership since he can't get the evil Republicans to back any of his ideas. What the pundits will do is point to the fact the experts think there will be an economic upturn for sure in the next four years under Obama and the fact he just needs more time to "complete the deal." Ah it's going to be a fun lovefest the next few days. Bring it on. The pundits are ****ing huge on war. Was I the only one alive in 2003?

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 11:31 AM) I think it's safe to say that both spending and low taxation is a problem. I agree, spending is too low, particularly given the economic situation.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 11:20 AM) After you finish holding your breath, there is a pretty clear alternative here which was said early on, and ignored. We don't have a tax problem, we have a spending problem. You could tax the 1% at a 100% tax rate, and we would still have a significant deficit. Assume Balta's numbers are right, and we at currently at $400 billion a year in interest payments. We are estimated to spend $586 billion in Fiscal 2012 on "Pre-primary thru secondary education". http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/year_s...1n_2021#usgs302 Except for the obvious fact that tax revenues as a share of GDP are at or near their lowest levels in 60+ years (that's before Medicare, I note), which completely undermines this statement. I'll even go to Heritage: The deficit is, therefore, at least 1/2 a tax problem. Going from the 14% of GDP collected in taxes in 2010 back to the ~18% ish long term average would cut the annual deficit in half. Goinig slightly above that to acknowledge the fact that we're going to deal with an increase in the retirement rate for the next 30 years would remove it even more. Of course, this is all based on the incorrect assumption that this is a problem.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) It's not a very bold prediction if you'd like to actually stop being ignorant about it. The CBO reported in 2009 we ALREADY pay $187 billion in interest alone. That was in 2009. It's well over 200billion a year just in interest payments now. While 1 trillion is a bit off...is not all that far off. 3 points. 1: Something like $80 billion of that interest was paid out to the federal reserve, which pays it back to the treasury. 2: The numbers sound big, but as a fraction of the economy, the interest on the national debt is hanging out close to recent historic lows. (The increase at the end assumes that the government continues running substantial deficits and interest rates increase following the CBO baseline scenario projections. 2011 came in substantially below that projection and 2012 is likely there as well). 3. It's actually $400 billion in interest payments/year right now.

Which 5th starter should go this weekend, Santiago or Axelrod?
Balta1701 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 10:48 AM) Therein lies the dilemma. Have Sale start the opener, and then you can push Quintana back. Do we trust Quintana at this point in the season to go out and beat the Tigers and set the tone in the all-important Game 1 Monday? That means Liriano (coming off a couple of shaky starts), Santiago and Axelrod against the Royals. Or Liriano, then Axelrod, then Santiago, so you don't have 2 lefties two days in a row with similar fastballs. I like the concept of a couple days extra rest for Sale, with him taking Quintana's spot, thus giving Quintana also a couple extra days of rest before he goes. So yeah, I'll go Liriano and then the rookies this weekend, with Sale leading off against the Tigers and Quintana moving back a couple days as well. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 10:37 AM) Of course, the downside is you end up losing two games to KC with Axelrod and Santiago both starting. Why? It's not like the other starters in our rotation have beaten up KC lately, and it's not like Axe and Santiago have been automatic losses lately either. -

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 10:27 AM) I like this. Either that, or if everyone's ready to go, Skip Sale for a week. -

What happens to the rotation for upcoming series if they both go (and everyone gets an extra rest day)? -
Did I just get to be Gandalf?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 12:39 AM) He prolly was going to call the prof to brag about what was about to happen. Holmes already is burning in hell. He's stuck in jail the rest of his life and he's only 24? Ha ha. I'm sure he's bored out of his mind already and he knows if he ever gets out of solitary that he's gonna be raped and beaten and pillaged. Too bad, motherbleeper. You asked for life in prison; u got it. His only hope is to get in a psychiatric hospital where he can prolly watch TV at least for the next 40 years. Prison rape is not a punishment for anything and I think it's pathetic that people think somehow that's ok. I don't care what a person did.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 08:45 AM) It also makes the system harder to sustain if it is balanced on the backs of a minority of the country. Instead of this statement being aimed at "funding for various government programs", it works equally well/better when applied to the entire consumer economy. It is very, very hard to sustain if only a minority of the country has enough money to participate.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 4, 2012 -> 08:44 AM) Wait until interest rates go back up and we are spending a trillion dollars a year on debt service. How many years in a row will you make this prediction? Just wait until the sun expands to a red giant stage, then we'll all be in trouble!

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 08:51 PM) Really insignificant to that post. Did his shoulder detach this year? Does he have the same stuff he had pre-injury?

Nice work bullpen.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 08:24 PM) Appearances and innings. W/L are also important. Sometimes they tell more truth than people admit that you won't see in a stat book. A .500 pitcher with great stats on a bad team still turns out to be a .500 pitcher on a good team. Peavy's hyped hasn't rubbed off on the Sox. More like their mental midgetry has worn off on Peavy. Peavy=bad return on value. What more can I really say. I never realized that being mentally weak could cause your shoulder to detach.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 05:31 PM) A lot would depend on how far you are from the stadium. Who wants to fight the traffic home on a night game that's on a holiday. I would prefer a day game. Depending on where you park, there's not a lot of traffic to fight. Once you get onto the highway at night on Labor Day, you're set. Or public transit.

Urlacher was supposed to be in practice today.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 04:40 PM) Matt Blanchard if necessary. None will be on the active roster, only Blanchard on the practice squad But they ahve that rule where the practice squad QB can play if the top 2 QB's both get hurt and are out for the game.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 04:45 PM) bad situation No worse than a town depending on any industry. Heck, probably a lot more reliable than some.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 04:20 PM) After watching the Tigers for two weeks when they lose, they make it close. With the Sox it seems some games the concede to a loss and want to start over the next day. That could be that Cabrera and Fielder are hitting so well, it creates a lot of pressure for other teams. Outside of when we're playing the Tigers, I think we do make it close when we lose. We don't get blown out by the Royals, they beat us in the 8th inning. The games against the Orioles were mostly close. The Sox have a ton of comebacks this year. The only place that we just fold right now is against Detroit.
