QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 18, 2011 -> 03:06 PM) Can't blame the coaches too much when your starting QB and RB go down, but it is on them when they stick with a backup QB who hasn't done anything but throw picks in 3 games. You really want the McCown show? Or the McNabb show?

Mat Latos traded to the Reds for Yonder.
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 18, 2011 -> 02:34 AM) I feel like people constantly forget this. It really doesnt matter who is better, Danks or Latos or Gio. Danks is one year from free agency while the others are 3-4 years away. That makes such a difference and that's what it's all about when it comes to trade value nowadays. And how long are the guys the Reds gave up under Padres team control for? 6.5 years for the 2 kids and at least 2 years for Volquez?

QUOTE (3E8 @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 10:12 PM) Using B-R's or Fangraph's adjusted ERAs, which account for both league and ballpark effect, Latos has been better each of the past two seasons. fWAR: John Danks 2010: 4.3 2011: 3.2 Matt Latos: 2010: 4.0 2011: 3.2 Yeah, Danks may have thrown a few more innings in 2010 which helped him there (equal innings and Latos would have had a slightly higher WAR), but Latos threw more innings than Danks in 2011 because Danks was hurt for those couple weeks, and yet they still put up similar WAR. And jsut to throw it in: bWAR D1: 2010: 4.8 2011: 2.2 Latos: 2010: 3.2 2011: 2.6

QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 10:06 PM) this is crazy. Latos' road splits are almost identical to his home splits. He had a 2.92 ERA two years ago and a 3.47 last year and is younger than Danks. Tell me what I'm missing. The National League.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 09:58 PM) Entirely possible however teams that are still in need of pitching will end up desperate when they dwindle down.... I'm gonna keep hoping you guys are right and I'm wrong. The Santos deal has not raised my hopes.

What's the better move?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 12:52 AM) You'd have to throw in Thornton, too. Something like Rios, Danks and Thornton (because Boone Logan was their first lefty out the pen for most of the season) for Gardner or minor leaguers. Personally, I feel it would be better to hold onto Rios for at least another half season and see if he can turn it around again. I can't repeat this enough. The White Sox have zero need for Brett Gardner. The White Sox have 5 outfielders who need playing time right now in the big leagues if you count the Stealth Elf. 5 outfielders for 3 positions, and DH is taken. The White Sox need to find a place for De Aza, Viciedo, and Rios to play this year. Carlos Quentin is already in the way of that. It's the only way we can find out what we have in those guys...all 3 of them have the talent to be legit starting MLB OF's, or at least the contract of them. And Lillibridge flat out earned playing time. Trading for Brett Gardner gives us 6 outfielders. It makes us need to trade Quentin and consigns both De Aza and Lillibridge to the bench or worse, to the DFA list. You might, might be able to pull off moving Lillibridge to SS, but there are 2 SS's on the way up in our minor leagues who can be the backup/young SS in a year or two. Worse still...Brett Gardner is not cheap any more. Brett Gardner is a first year arbitration eligible player this year. I repeat, Brett Gardner is a first year arb-eligible player this year. So we're talking something in the range of $3.5 million this year when the White Sox are uncompetitive...then $6-7 million next year, then $10 million or more if you want to keep him for the 3rd year. Brett Gardner will be half way cheap this year when the White Sox are rebuilding...then will immediately become expensive in 2013, and the White Sox may or may not be in a position to compete in 2013. Brett Gardner is an asset in 2012 for a team that needs outfielders, has money to spend, and wants to compete this year. The White Sox are NONE of these.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 08:38 PM) IMO its smart to have waited... now the Reds just set the market for SP. The other possibility is that the one team stupid enough to give up serious talent for a starter just made their deal and now they don't need one or have the bullets any more.

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 08:29 PM) Danks can be as good as Latos, he just hasn't been. If Danks was in the NL, he'd be better. Latos is a #3, eventually he can be #2, but I'm not sure if he is a true #1 until he starts pitching with his head more than just his arm. Fangraphs has Latos and Danks pretty close to balanced over the last 2 years, all things considered. Latos had an ERA in the 3's, in the NL, and pitching in Petco. Danks had an ERA in the high 3's/low to mid 4's, pitching in the big boy league, pitching in the Cell.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 07:18 PM) Right, because that's what I said. The Sox are not really trying to compete this year, they will put out a team with some players like Konerko on it and say they are competing but they are a team rebuilding. Which is why they have zero choice but to trade Danks. Soon.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 07:10 PM) This I agree with, and said pretty much the exact thing when the trade was announced. But to call Molina "scraps" is just hyperbole. But it's not exaggerating to say that we've already thrown the towel in on this season.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 06:49 PM) Oh please. In terms of something that will help us this season, yes. In the long run, he might well be a decent addition, but it's absolutely a step backwards for this year. How about if I add in Buehrle? can we call it scraps then? So far, we're down 5.0 fWAR on the offseason, and we've added effectively nothing. If Dunn and Rios both gave us very good seasons next year, that would simply offset what we've already lost.
