  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 10:34 AM) I think you guys are forgetting the timing of all this though...now that the A's have put their young starters on the market, which are further away from FA, Kenny has to allow BB to trade them or pull them off the market, because teams are going to try to acquire Gio (and previously Cahill) for the same or a similar package as they would offer for Danks. My worry is...who hits the market next? We're not out of time yet...but we're getting closer to that point...and we have not just got Danks to move, but also bats, Floyd, Thornton...
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 10:28 AM) Common sense tells you that if he had the offers for players he wanted to move, they would be long gone. Which tells me that if a team you don't like gives you that offer...you don't mess around.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 10:23 AM) There are other options. That's just it. The Sox have had plenty of discussions with other teams, which have leaked out to some extent. But here's what concerns me...despite Kenny in November saying he had good offers, despite Kenny making the first "weaken our chances at contending this year" move in dumping Sergio for an iffy return, the Sox are essentially still sitting right where they were in October...needing to shed salary and move veterans to restock talent and to clear space for the guys they do have. If Kenny was right on the spectacular deals he was offered in November (smokescreen, obviously)...then the fact that nothing has happened would be disconcerting. However, if Kenny was not offered spectacular deals for the guys that he absolutely needs to move, and we're already in mid-December...that tells me that an incredible haul is getting less and less likely by the day, and if a team offers a decent package, that decent package is probably the best we'll get.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 10:14 AM) Eh. So you take that offer back to other teams, and get them to bid up. f*** Rizzo. with only 28 other teams, that isn't nearly that much of an option. Especially when you then select for the ones who need starting pitching, are willing to give up talent for that starting pitching, can absorb money, and are willing to take on a pitcher on a 1 year contract...you take the best deal you can get.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 10:13 AM) Counter-point: inner-city ghettos, Appalachia, rural Ozarks. And anyway yeah, nobody doesn't understand that poverty is at least somewhat relative. That completely misses the point. It's the huge blindspot in these types of surveys. The real blindspot in those surveys is actually that they're somewhat correct in a sense...one can get things like a refrigerator, cell phone, even a fairly high-end TV for fairly cheap these days. Having satellite service doesn't bankrupt low income people any more. The real issue is not the things that have gotten cheap enough to be affordable, the real issue now is the things that have become so expensive as to be unaffordable to people in the lower income levels...things like health care, transportation, food, housing, energy/heat, and education. That's the real scandal in these reports...the niceities actually have become cheap enough that you can have them without having to make very big sacrifices...but the staples, the things you actually need to build a stable life...those are the things out of reach. Giving up your HDTV and your cell phone doesn't pay for a year of health insurance or a year of college for your kid. Giving up your X Box doesn't pay for gasoline or the surgery you need.
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 10:09 AM) Ha, I was thinking the same thing. If I were Kenny I would absolutely flip the table on Rizzo and treat him the same way Although it might be nice to do so...if they're going to put a solid offer on the table for Danks, we aren't in a position to be jerks out of spite, we need the solid offer too much.
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 09:50 AM) It just said "cellphone," which could be a cheap pay-as-you-go thing. One can actually get an iPhone3G for free these days with a contract. If your family drops the home phone line, it's a fairly decent deal.
  8. The university is facing an NCAA deadline on Friday to report on the investigation, and is asking for more time.
  9. The former AD and University President have their hearing(s) today. It's possible McQueary could be called to testify.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 08:39 AM) ChiTribRogers Phil Rogers Reports are saying that #Blue Jays have won Yu Darvish bidding. Most think the bid was more than the $51 mil for Daisuke. Seriously, good luck keeping your job AA if that report is true.
  11. QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 11:10 PM) And 127 Million a year should get you in the playoffs, unless you have Henry Jr at the helm at 333 W 35th st. Actually...last year there were 9 teams with payrolls above $110 million, 2 made the playoffs.
  12. Right now, a lot of those teams are probably waiting to see who won the posting bid for Darvish.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 03:06 AM) You can't directly post or copy, but you can probably get by "characterizing/summarizing" in your own words. Although some would probably disagree with that idea as well. Until the Congress passes the "Destroy the internet" bill today, summarizing and including a link is fine.
  14. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 05:00 AM) From an outsider's perspective I think there's pluses and minuses for both of them. In the regular season, I think Rip will be a decent enough fit on both sides of the ball. Come playoff time though, opposing teams are obviously going to focus on Rose and try to make the other guys on the court beat you. That's where I think Crawford would come in real handy in a series against a Miami or a Boston, he can create his own shot and easily put up 20+ points, and would help lighten the load on Rose. Rip obviously can't create his own shot, and that's the major difference b/w the 2. Feel free to tell me why I'm wrong, but I'm still not under the impression that Crawford is all that reliable in creating his own shot either, I thought the motivation for him would be that hes' probably a better outside shooter than Hamilton (or certainly more willing to take the outside shot even if it's not advisable). I don't think of Jamal Crawford breaking down a defense on the dribble and then passing away the ball.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 12:05 AM) You mean to tell me that say the Bulls didn't have Rose....they wouldn't be salivating over a Kidd for Deng trade right now?!?!?!?! Actually they probably would be...as a means of moving Deng's contract.
  16. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 03:24 PM) Romney or bust. That's EVERYONE's mentality, including Obama's. They want him so bad they can taste it (or plant articles out there to have everyone attacked outside of Mittens). Why? Because health care is 100% off the table if Mittens is the nominee, and they can ward off the attack from the flank on that issue alone. Then why has the Obama administration been spending money and effort attacking Romney for months? It sure seems to me that the Obama admin. would love to face anyone but Mittens.
  17. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 03:19 PM) one of these days, I actually will hit one of my "ideas" and I'll remember my pals at soxtalk. And that will be the last anyone ever hears of Balta1701...
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) if that DC escort ring's list never got out I doubt this does. It didn't get out? We at least know the Senator who was on it.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 02:16 PM) Maybe not released, but it will be "released" for sure. I'm still amazed at how few of the MLB 2003 list we've actually seen.
  20. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 02:09 PM) Is this story going to have a bigger impact than the Jerry Sundusky story.....the impact to the world of sports could be mind blowing. That amount of narcotics is sickening and almost sounds comical. There's no obvious reason to assume that the list will ever get released.
  21. The Intrade betting on the nomination markets have Newt absolutely plummeting today. The going rate was at 40% on Newt a few days ago and it's dropped to 15% today. One version of a polltracker also shows him having peaked and begun a fairly steep free-fall in polling data, although that isn't currently matched by the RealClearPolitics.com version.
  22. 4th man, currently a prisoner in the NY State prison system, has come forwards with accusations of abuse by this coach, and done so publicly.
  23. Hmmmm...the fact that we could use this to detain the CEO and probably many employees of JP Morgan Chase makes me suddenly reconsider my opposition.
  24. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 01:32 PM) Yes, Kobe getting traded to the team he currently is on is quite the ridiculous idea. Perhaps I have been drinking.
  25. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 15, 2011 -> 11:21 AM) Yeah things pointing out the absurdity of what seems like every "fiscal conservative" GOP candidates' tax plans seem fair game for this thread but feel free to move it. We're about 3 weeks away from being votes cast. You already pointed out the plan and the absurdity in it, it was the extra post with the extra visual effect that seems unnecessary unless someone steps forward to defend the plan.
