  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 01:08 PM) The idea that Jordan Danks missing would stop the Sox from dealing Alex Rios if they had a chance is hysterical. I'd really like to believe that, but I'm in a pessimistic mood on this team right now.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 1, 2011 -> 11:32 PM) And finally, I sure as hell don't like that the banks were able to access that kind of capital and put the entire country at that level of risk, with apparently no negative consequences. And even if you think this was necessary, how is it I am the only one who seems to see what this revelation means to the status of US currency and our foreign-held debt??? Well, first, you're 100% right on the first part. There should have been negative consequences for the financial industry, but we all know that can't happen. And second, this revelation shows that the Federal Reserve will act as a lender of last resort during a crisis and will protect the American System from collapse at all costs. That is a much more important statement than a worry that the Federal Reserve will suddenly decide to stop fighting inflation.
  3. He's another lazy union bum, taking more than a day off for Christmas.
  4. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 12:27 PM) And who cares? QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 12:29 PM) Not I. Apparently we're trading the only reason we've kept Jordan around this long anyway. "Well, sure, we could move Alex Rios, he's hit OK, but we lost our defensive replacement CF in the Rule 5 draft. So I guess we're going to have to hold onto Rios for another year."
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 12:47 PM) Greg, I can't believe anyone would want one of the most popular players in Sox history to go play for the Cubs. Remember how Juan Pierre was the only thing that prevented Ted Lilly from no-hitting us? It'd feel worse when Mark does it to us.
  6. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 11:53 AM) Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the White Sox have been shopping John Danks around in trade talks. General manager Kenny Williams indicated last month that he would be reluctant to part with Danks, but it was likely just an attempt to bump up the asking price. That price is evidently steep, as a source from another team told Cowley that Williams "asked for everyone on our roster in return" for the left-hander. While an obvious exaggeration, it's no surprise that Williams would be demanding a lot for the 27-year-old Danks, who is set to make around $7-8 million in his final year of arbitration. I'm glad that if the Marlins are trying to trade for Danks, we're asking for a high price.
  7. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 12:13 PM) I would normally not make an issue of it, except for the fact that ESPN's biggest talking head so righteously explained to us all when the PSU scandal broke how reporting a crime such as child molestation to the police trumps all customary reporting procedures. To not do so is a moral outrage! Journalists are given exceptions here that other professions should not be.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 30, 2011 -> 09:47 PM) Evans, who most recently has worked as a player agent, would be a good addition to Epstein's staff in some capacity as he is a Chicago native with the type of generational knowledge on Wrigley Field that Epstein had on Fenway when he took over the Red Sox. C'mon, does Evans having worked in Chicago really matter THAT much? By that definition, Kim Ng would be just as good a hire...or anyone familiar with Chicago, for that matter. Heck, they might as well hire Bill Rancic from The Apprentice, and Guiliana. A lot of people think that "playing in Wrigley Field" is one issue that really hurts the Cubs, from the number of day games to the lack of modern facilities. So, having a guy who has already seen the type of people who succeed and fail in Wrigley would be a good benefit.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 08:51 AM) Plus Hanley. I don't want Hanley's big money and big problems. Give me Stanton.
  10. Wow, you guys have a problem with that? I can complain about the fact that the fed did not extract a pound of flesh from those banks, firing and bankrupting their execs, but I have no problem with the fed doing that. That is literally its most important job and the fact that the ECB won't do that is why Europe is facing a continent wide bank run.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 30, 2011 -> 09:49 AM) I'm not sure yet that this is "clearly a rebuilding process". If the team moves Thornton, Quentin and EITHER of Danks or Floyd (but not both)... and re-signs M56... that doesn't look like a full-boat rebuild to me. Viciedo replaces Quentin, the rotation becomes Buehrle/Floyd-or-Danks/Peavy/Humber/Sale, and there is a long list of possible replacements for Thornton. Meanwhile, there are whatever prospect the team gets for those three. That looks like a re-tool on the fly to me, not a full-on rebuild. And they may not even trade both Quentin and Thornton, maybe only one of the two. Of course, they may end up trading both those SP's and other people, and not sign M56, for a serious rebuild. That might also happen. I really, really want the dominos to start falling soon. Its driving me nuts that we don't even have any idea what general direction the organization is going to take. IMO, the key guy on rebuilding is Matty. If Danks and Quentin are moved but mark comes back, that's still a competitive team. Moving Matty means move everyone; that's the move where your team starts getting worse next year and has to break in and develop a kid to replace him...and even in the pen, developing a kid is a multi year commitment.
  12. Didn't Roy have one great game during the playoffs?
  13. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 11:16 PM) If said prospect(s) ceiling is that of a 5-6 WAR SP or position player, you bet. Craig Kimbrel had an X-Box type season and topped out at 3.2 WAR. Relievers are a distant third behind SP and position players in terms of importance. Give Reed a shot to close. If he bombs, find somebody else to pitch those 60 innings. Remember though, even a top prospect probably has close to a 50% bust rate, or even higher if it's only a moderate level prospect, so a 50% rate of not even getting to where Sergio currently is. That's why the price has to be higher than just 1 position player/pitcher top prospect.
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 09:49 PM) I can't see him being worth this much realistically...he's a valuable player, but he's not someone that puts up huge offensive numbers, nor is he someone that fans are really all that aware of. I could see him bringing back a few nice prospects, but nothing like the haul the Rockies got for UJ... Then it would be silly to deal him. We don't need to move him for money reasons or to clear space for another prospect. The only real reason to move him is that the deal makes us significantly better long term, and that means you need an absolute load to make the move.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 10:01 PM) So we trade our closer who is under our control for six seasons, for a prospect who is under our control for six seasons. Which is why my statement was 2 prospects before I even start thinking about it.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 06:04 PM) I still think there is a better than even chance he ends up here. Not just Rock's source, but also, I am fairly certain that bottled up demand for guys like Quentin, Thornton and Danks/Floyd will allow KW to make a big trade or two cutting salary, keep the other one of Floyd/Danks, and sign M56. I'm not sure by any stretch, but if I was forced to bet on a team, it would still be the Sox. The question is, is M-56 going to stay here through what is clearly a rebuilding process. ANd do the Sox want to pay him to do that.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 07:55 PM) That's just it. With Santos contract he is worth more than "chips". Kettle cooked chips.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 07:54 PM) Mariano just turned 42. If you are good you are good. Comparing players to inhuman monsters isn't fair.
  19. Bobby Valentine it is.
  20. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 07:03 PM) That would make Ramirez one of the most valuable trade commodities in MLB. Correct. With his performance per dollar, he is.
  21. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 02:47 PM) And it than begs the question, should Alexei be available. The Sox do have a lot of valuable assets. The problem is they have three of the worse contracts in baseball and a weak farm system that has ultimately cost them the playoffs the past couple of seasons. Alexei Ramirez would require the kind of package that the Rockies got for Jiminez. Maybe better.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 01:08 PM) No one is taking Rios. Especially with Danks, that's a $21 million commitment, and moving rios with santos means you can't send them to any small market team. Roos stays and plays until he retires or he plays well enough that he can be moved at no cost. Just accept it. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 01:25 PM) You can have Santos if you take Rios and his whole contract...deal?
  23. QUOTE (Real @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 01:13 PM) What is Sergio's value in a trade? Pros: contract, team will control him cheaply for numerous years, dominant closer. Cons: He's just a reliever when it's all said and done. Though call me crazy or whatever, I'd rather have Sergio closing for my team than Papelbon So what's his value (What could the Sox get back, best case scenario)? Top 25 prospect? Nothing close to that? Better than that? I'd 'entertain' offers until the winter meetings, let every team know he's available and try to get teams into a bidding war 2 legit top prospects plus some filler, and either 1 of those prospects is top 25ish or both are top 50ish. Otherwise there's no reason to move him.
  24. QUOTE (Tannerfan @ Nov 29, 2011 -> 11:54 AM) How about offering Santos or Danks. Tell the team they can take their pick, but they have to take Rios. Sign Quinten, sign Buehrle, everybody's happy. No one is taking Rios. Especially with Danks, that's a $21 million commitment, and moving rios with santos means you can't send them to any small market team. Roos stays and plays until he retires or he plays well enough that he can be moved at no cost. Just accept it.
  25. The picture emerging is of every asset not named Konerko or Ramirez being available. Which means paulie is probably available too. If its going to happen, no half measures. If you deal one piece, look to 2014 and move anyone you can't keep until then, and anyone else you get a great offer for.
