  1. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 01:35 PM) Can't we just call him Ozzie Martinez? Isn't that his name? Anyway, if the Sox are letting Buehrle go AND trading Floyd and Danks, they might as well trade Alexei too and see what they can get. With a bad team coming in 2012, and Martinez, Escobar, and Saladino in the pipeline, Alexei could go and bring back some good prospects. Mets may need a SS soon. The Metropolitans aren't really in a position to be looking towards winning this year or trading away kids for veterans. They also have a guy in their system, Flores, who plays short, at least for now.
  2. The latest U.N. conference trying to get an international agreement on Greenhouse gases has begun...and was greeted by intense storms and flooding which killed 10 people and left 700 homeless.
  3. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 12:42 PM) Balta, Once again, the grand jury "report" was based on testimony, but the report itself was hearsay. As I said in the Paterno thread, the lesson is to never admit to anything. No matter how sincere a statement "I should have done more" it will always be turned against you, because at the end of the day, those out to destroy you will turn it into an admission of guilt (any human who hears that someone has been raped or molested will have wanted to do more, regardless of how feasible it is). The best thing to do is what Boeheim will inevitably do, never admit to anything. Actually, the lesson should be that you shouldn't cover up a guy on your staff who is raping young boys in your program's showers, because that cover up is where the problems for that coach really hit. Which may also be why Boeheim could be in trouble here, if he had any knowledge of this case.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 12:36 PM) So ESPN and the Post Standard were both given the taped phone call in 2003, yet both chose not to report the tape to the authorities because of no corraborating witnesses. And who won the National Championship in 2003? Just sayin Ok, not the 2nd part, but the first part seems very, very odd. Especially the failure to report on the part of the national press organization...you can't tell me that they're in the pocket of "Big Orange" and expect me to believe that.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) I made the point when this thread started that it would just turn into GOP bashing by the Dems here. My point in posting that is that exactly that has happened. No one hesitates to post "relatively minor news" when it is "bad". This thread turned into the exact worthless steaming heap of partisan crap it was destined to become. Fine, I'll stop biting my tongue since I continue to be called out. If I had posted it, then you'd just rip me for posting things that make Romney look bad, since Newt is a weaker nominee than Obama, to the point that the DNC is currently running ads against Romney in key states. If I hadn't posted it, you'd rip me for not posting something positive for newt, as you just did.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 12:15 PM) Yes, but we set the precedent that the coach is fired even with rumors and heresay as the source (unless the board knew for sure that it happened which I am pretty sure they did). Now wait, we actually had in the Penn State case both testimony about the coach's failure to act and a public admission from the Coach that he should have done more. "Rumors and Hearsay" is not an accurate description here.
  7. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) Really? the 'Stons? That is pretty lame As is detroit basketball.
  8. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 12:12 PM) This might come off as offensive (who am I kidding, might?) to some, but how do you plead down to lesser charges of rape and sodomy? Surprise butt sex? In a lot of cases, the victim tends to be very hesitant to come out and actually describe in detail in public what actually happened, especially when you throw in things like people accusing them of just being after money, so if you can get the accused to plead down to a charge like false imprisonment, it works out a lot better for most of the people involved.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 11:30 AM) More like it is "good" news, so it isn't getting posted. When is the last time that a newspaper endorsement actually seemed to move a race? Last time I let myself get excited about one of those was in the 08 race when I thought that a few key paper endorsements would swing votes towards Obama, in particular in the California primary, and it did effectively nothing. In 2 days, no one will remember the endorsement. Hell, 1/3 of the people who heard about it are probably angry with Newt and wondering why he's getting endorsements from New Hampshire Union Leaders, since the Unions need to be destroyed anyway.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 11:15 AM) The situations really aren't comparable. In both cases, it would be letting a key member of our team go to the division rival who won the division last year because we didn't want the guy back enough to offer a fair deal. The money numbers are different, but there's a lot of comparison there. Especially when that player beats our heads in for several years afterwards. Soft tossing lefty with good control and a changeup? Mark may no-hit the Sox 6 times in the next few years if he winds up in detroit.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 11:21 AM) Isn't there a way to still access parts of your profile even if it is set at private? I feel like I have heard about recruiters that can get around the privacy settings and still see some, if not all, of your info. I could be wrong? The problem is that there are just so many privacy settings it's darn near impossible to lock them all up.
  12. That's what she said.
  13. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 10:51 AM) From the way back machine . . . Compared to the headwinds Obama has now, Bush in 2004 should have looked like a shoo-in. 2 years off of 90% approval ratings, legitimate "Wartime" president with seeming actual victories to his name, 5.4% unemployment rate.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 10:54 AM) No posts about Newt getting endorsed by NH's biggest newspaper? But I thought this thread was for news about the GOP nominating process? I've stopped thinking that newspaper endorsements matter, mostly.
  15. QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 10:46 AM) As would I, and that's my point... If the 3 have great seasons.. aka normal season to their standards.. The Sox should be legit playoff team, I don't see Kenny making any move.. aka, JR approving any trade that takes away from the team for the long term greater good. So Balta statement IMO is a great theory, not based in reality, of how we can possibly dump those guys. Then the only thing that is going to happen is we're going to pay out their contracts unless they retire, so we may as well get ourselves ready to see them in the lineup.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 09:54 AM) the OTL thing on this was nuts. Makes me wonder, with that phone call, how they could really sit on it. Did they actually have that phone call a few years ago?
  17. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 09:38 AM) If they truly thought he might be innocent, I guess they could have just put him on administrative leave until it all played out. But with everything that went down in Penn St., they really had no choice. I have a hard time seeing Boeheim keep his job. Even if he knew nothing at all (which I doubt), he still called out all of the accusers as extortionists, which in his position was the wrong thing to do. As far as I can tell, Syracuse even had a ready-made excuse to keep using the administrative leave issue...no charges have been filed in the case, correct? I'd assume that the phone call yesterday was the "straw that broke the camel's back", where they took a look at that and said that there was no way things would end well for the school no matter what.
  18. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 09:26 AM) Why does the offseason seem to be going so slow? Papelbon is the only big contract I can reme.ber, (at least with a new team). Is it the economy, new CBA? I think the real answer is the CBA. Teams didn't want to sign players until they knew what the draft/compensation rules were going to be, and players didn't want to sign until they saw that the players' share of income was going up. That put a delay on everything getting started. Plus, you have the 2 mighty 1b dominoes, and until the "Best player in the game of baseball" is signed somewhere, a lot of teams will keep their options open.
  19. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 09:20 AM) Good point. Thanks. The only realistic plan with Dunn, Rios, and Peavy, is to put them in the lineup next April. If somehow, any of the 3 comes out and performs well in April and May, then by the time people start making trades, it might be possible to move them without eating most of their salary. They have to be viewed as sunk costs for now; the team has committed to spend the money, anything other than "Sitting them on the bench for 3 years" that you can get for them is a bonus.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 09:12 AM) Kinda spoils your day, huh? How will I ever get 300 posts in this thread without someone to go after?
  21. Remember how stupid it was of the organization to let Jim Thome walk to Minnesota? Letting Mark! walk to Detroit would be 3x dumber.
  22. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 08:23 AM) I may have asked this previously, but I can't recall, but if I did I apologize. Anyway they can lowball Danks but make the trader take Rios too? Similar to with the Marlins with Beckett and Lowell? I guess the only real snag in that is that Danks is a FA after next season. Unlikely. The biggest problem there is that you're asking any team that takes on Danks to also take on a total of ~$21 million next year and $45 million total, depending on Danks's actual arbitration number. If Danks is then resigned, you've asked that team to take on >$120 million-ish in commitments for those 2 players. That basically knocks out every team except really Boston and NY from the running; no one else has that kind of money to blow on a starter, and with CJ wilson and others on the market, cheaper and better options are available.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2011 -> 09:04 AM) jonmorosi Jon Morosi Sunday night trade: #Mariners acquire John Jaso from #Rays for reliever Josh Lueke. 26 year old reliever, 6.06 ERA last year in 25 appearances, came to the M's in the Cliff Lee deal, faced rape and sodomy charges before pleading to lesser offense back in 2009.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 27, 2011 -> 11:36 PM) Oh BS. The Bulls could have had him last time around and wanted nothing to do with himl Well, if the Bulls wanted to see if he had anything left in the tank, he did play 72 games for the 'Stons last year. Of course, he was also playing for the Pistons, which doesn't make anyone look good right now. Either way, I'd rather have whichever guard the Pistons use their amnesty clause on. They have several options.
