  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 22, 2011 -> 08:49 AM) Don Cooper could give a s*** less about "All-in" if you listen to him talk. You do realize that the logical conclusion based on your statement was that "Ozzie was going all-in, but Cooper was looking to 2012", right?
  2. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 22, 2011 -> 01:57 AM) All the nightmares (Johan, Castillo, Punto, Kuble, Cuddyer, Nathan, etc.) are leaving Minnesota. Haha. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 22, 2011 -> 02:04 AM) Mauer and Morneau aren't leaving anytime soon, unfortunately. I also have a feeling Carrol and Doumit will end up killing us. Right now, Mauer and Morneau's contracts are Terry Ryan's nightmare.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 03:58 PM) Neither. He ran him out there because he realized if you want this guy to throw a higher number of innings in the future, he had to put up innings to condition him. Trouble is...that's the exact opposite of an "All in" move. At the time Humber was really starting to wear down, June and July, where you could see that he would give you 5 innings and then get in trouble, we were still maintaining the charade of being competitive. This was still pre-trade-deadline, when we should have sold harder if we were planning for the future. We still had Chris Sale in the bullpen, when long-term we'd be better off with him getting starter's innings. We still had Viciedo and De Aza raking in AAA. If "Look towards 2012" was the goal with Philip Humber's arm, it should have been the goal with the rest of the roster. If "Take our last shot" at the division was the goal with the rest of the roster, then if Philip Humber can give you 5 innings of shutout/1 run ball and he's going to implode in the 6th, take the 5 innings and have the bullpen ready in the 6th.
  4. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 22, 2011 -> 07:21 AM) Say what you will about Ozzie, but he has always been pretty good in handling pitchers. He does not seem like the type of guy to put a player's career in jeopardy for his own self reasons of the organization. I would have said the same thing until I watched this season. His handling of the pitching staff this season was epically bad.
  5. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 22, 2011 -> 08:19 AM) As for Alonso, he's the type of prospect we should target for Danks IMO. Essentially major leage ready and with great potential, but is somewhat expendable to his current team. Without draft pick compensation, I doubt you could expect much more by trading Danks. I don't even know if the Reds would consider such a deal, but I think it's worth exploring. If I were an opposing GM, I wouldn't give up anything of that level for Danks when I can go out on the free agent market, spend basically the same amount of money that it will take to extend Danks, and find similar/better pitchers.
  6. Just one leg at a time.
  7. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 07:35 PM) The problem is that nobody cares about anything other than the Cy Young and MVP (somewhat the ROY's). One of the two major awards needs to be solely for pitching and the other solely for hitting. No one caring about the award doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
  8. QUOTE (TheHugeUnit @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 07:14 PM) Hmm yeah I thought Peavy was signed up for two more years. Not that I would want him, but I just think maybe a change of places would help both of those guys. Peavy has a $22 million option for 2013 or a $4 million buyout at the end of this year.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 07:12 PM) Santos, Viciedo, and Ramirez. I think he is anti-latino. Except Alonso is also Cuban-born.
  10. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 07:08 PM) What do you do about the pitching? $13 million freed up immediately, 3 guys who must be in rotation are Peavy, Sale, and Humber. If the Sox don't care about winning in 2012 (which is what trading for a young 1b would say), then Axelrod and Stewart can get shots...or...we've basically traded Danks, Floyd, and Konerko. At least a couple pitchers ought to come back in those steps.
  11. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 06:58 PM) LF Alonzo, CF De Aza, RF Rios. Closer Reed. Two years Alonzo moves to 1B. Easier to fill a LF hole than a SP hole. LF De Aza, CF Rios, RF Viciedo, 1b Alonso, $13 million immediately available for various purposes.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 03:29 PM) We just need a Babe Ruth Award already for the leagues best hitter, then MVP won't be an issue and can go to THE best player in each league without ignoring hitters for the entire year if a pitcher wins (like this). QUOTE (Felix @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 03:32 PM) But Babe Ruth was a pitcher too QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 03:34 PM) So does the Babe Ruth award go to the best hitting pitcher or best pitching hitter? I'm so confused... QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 03:36 PM) Just call it the Ted Williams award then. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 03:38 PM) Under the current qualifications, Verlander earned it. There needs to be a Best Hitter Award though. How about we just call it the Hank Aaron award, note that it already exists, and that Kemp and Bautista already won it this year?
  13. The only reason why the Sox would have any interest in a 1b is if the Sox could move their current, expensive 1b. That's the only reason. Especially if the other option is somehow "Move this 1b to the OF and hope he sticks there despite not being a great defender to start".
  14. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 06:35 PM) Not better than Viciedo. But that still means we need a RF and a 1b 2 years down the line (and a closer since that's where we're starting all this). Really makes a mess.
  15. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 06:25 PM) If they can do that then by all means they should. I don't think that's the case though. Konerko is the 1 big salary guy on this club who ought to be moveable with a decent return.
  16. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 06:14 PM) You trade Viciedo because he is most likely to bring back the best possible pitching haul of any Sox and Alonzo gives you a young middle of the order hitter to replace Viciedo. Alonzo plays LF until he replaces Konerko at 1B. Personally, I think that trading Konerko plus freeing up $12 million would be a much more solid pitching haul than trading Viciedo. And I hate the idea of moving guys around who already are iffy on defense. Put the guy at 1b and stop trying to convince fools on message boards to trade him. Doing so already made someone dislike Viciedo for some unfathomable reason.
  17. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 05:48 PM) Put Alonzo in LF and deal Viciedo for pitching. Why on Earth would you deal Viciedo for young pitching and keep Konerko on the roster? If you're dealing away Santos to get Alonso, you're getting Alonso with 2013 and beyond in mind. However, Konerko will be 37 that year and will be in the final year of his contract. Thus, this pitching you've obtained and this LF you've obtained will suddenly have a manufactured 1b hole starting that season. If you're trading away your current closer to get a young 1b, and your 1b position is blocked by a 35 year old under contract for 2 years for $25 million, "trading away your young RF and moving the 1b to the OF" shouldn't even enter your mind.
  18. The Freakonomics view of the NBA lockout.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 04:50 PM) I'm sure they wouldn't. I remember reading a few years back that for its size the NY metro area should have 4 to 5 teams in it, when compared to the sizes of the other markets. How much power do the local teams really have in this regard? This seems like a point where Baseball's full anti-trust exemption would give them some power to overpower the wishes of those franchises.
  20. QUOTE (TheHugeUnit @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 05:27 PM) Would you guys do Jake Peavy and RHP Jacob Petricka for AJ Burnett? AJ is good for innings and can be a good pitcher in certain month(s) of the year. The Yankees had drafted Petricka a few years ago if I'm not mistaken, he's a bullpen arm. Burnett has 2 seasons at $16.5 million a year ($33 million total) remaining on his contract. Peavy has $17 million on his deal next year and a $4 million buyout, for $21 million total. So, the Sox would be taking on $12 million in that scenario. My answer is clearly no just based on the numbers. A step further though...if Peavy were to come out and be decent this year, the Sox could potentially save $5 millino or more on top of that by moving him at the deadline and getting the receiving team to pick up a portion of his remaining salary. Thus, the only move the Sox should make involving Peavy is a move which reduces the Sox money exposure, not one that increases it, unless the talent coming back is obscene.
  21. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 05:14 PM) May as well argue that wins are the most important pitching stat. Forte has less TDs because the Bears let Barber vulture them There's no "Vulturing" here. For whatever reason, Forte is actually pretty bad at getting into the end zone in short yardage situations. He doesn't move piles and he can't jump. He needs the wide open hole to break into the end zone and doesn't get that often on straight-ahead goal line runs. Forte needs someone like Barber as his backup to get those yards.
  22. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 04:27 PM) This is where Marty actually has a point. If you can deal a Santos for a cheap position player or SP with upside (Alonso definitely qualifies), you go for it. I don't know Alonso that well, but he's a 1b right? I would really hate to deal for a guy that we have to move to RF because he's blocked by Konerko, only to find out that Alonso is blocked in RF by Viciedo. In other words, he better be able to give me numbers that make it reasonable for me to send the Captain packing.
  23. QUOTE (Big Daddy Kool @ Nov 21, 2011 -> 04:56 PM) Most likely the opposite, from Will Carroll's twitter feed: https://twitter.com/#!/injuryexpert/sta...734982511329280 How does that suggest that it is the opposite?
