  1. QUOTE (MindGame2004 @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 10:47 PM) You keep Santos. At this point Quentin, Danks, Floyd and Thornton should all be on the table for position talent. Kenny is far too pitcher happy, so I suspect that's what they'll be going for. There is nothing wrong with taking young pitching if it's available. Young starting pitching is the single most valuable commodity in baseball.
  2. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 12:47 AM) Not gonna start a topic on this as not really Sox related.. but Dave Marintez, Sandy Alomar Jr.. few interviews, not even one of them got a vacant managerial position. Thoughts? I mean, you read SoxTalk in September and they were treated as the second coming of Jesus H. Christ.. Well, the Red Sox still haven't filled their manager spot yet, right? And the Cubs hired someone with bench coaching experience, right?
  3. QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 08:29 PM) I'd be shocked if the ball boy was the only one. Well clearly there is a second victim mentioned in the article.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 08:50 PM) So glad we focused on that for a year instead of how to create jobs and get the economy rolling again. Well yeah. People tell me the deficit is a problem. Not sure I agree. But the PPACA solved more than half that problem (according to the same people who tell us we have a long term debt.) Remarkable thing is...after the PPACA, if Congress did nothing...there is no long term deficit. The CBO agrees. The long term deficit doesn't exist if you don't extend the Bush/Obama tax cuts, keep redoing the amt fix, and starting new wars.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 06:56 PM) Bulls*** they will address that problem. The only problem they will address is lowering taxes. They won't address health care which is the main cause of our debt. They are frauds. Actually, the 2 main causes of our debt right now are 1. Upper income tax cuts, 2. The current economic climate wiht 9% unemployment, and 3. Unpaid for wars. The #1 dominates because that's what built the majority of it over a 30 year period. THe last couple trillion appeared because then there was a finance-industry driven collapse of the entire system. Long term, the driver of our debt becomes the fact that health care costs are growing at inflation + 8%. But that's long term. It's still not a huge driver,yet.
  6. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 05:42 PM) No. As I said, it's a trump card. It doesn't matter if he was only slightly better in each category, even with park adjustments. In the end, it's a similar argument to the "it'll look like a line drive in the box score" adage. He got the job done, he gets it. I woudlnt' be surprised if there's a time a few years down the road when "Halladay has a higher WAR" or some other ballpark adjusted stat that actually wins this conversation. Or at least gets a lot closer.
  7. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 05:21 PM) Make it so, number 2. He's never spoken the words "Number 2". It's always "Number 1".
  8. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 05:45 PM) I think Las Vegas and Nashville are the two most ideal sites. Nashville is probably the best, as there isn't much baseball near there. The whole "Black Sox" connection makes baseball in Vegas very unlikely in our lifetimes. Ditto Pete Rose. Portland Or is wierd, because it's kinda small, but supposedly the interest in baseball in that area is through the roof.
  9. QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 08:12 PM) What?
  10. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 05:10 PM) I can tell you what my excrement level for this team in 2012 is. High.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 03:57 PM) jonmorosi Jon Morosi If #RedSox fire int'l scouting head Craig Shipley, #Dodgers exec Rick Ragazzo could become candidate there. Punishment for the whole "Matsuzaka" thing?
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 03:30 PM) He wasnt even a top three candidate on this forum, I would think his hiring would have garnered some pretty s***ty reviews. Not as bad as Robin, but not excitement either. "Top 3 candidates for this forum" is not a criteria I cared strongly about. His resume speaks solidly for himself, even if he didn't immediately come to our minds.
  13. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 04:47 PM) Or that the guy won the Triple Crown, so nobody really cares about the advances stats. I love advanced stats and all, but I feel like the Triple Crown is a trump card to pretty much anything. Here's the real question though. Put Halladay in a pitchers park. Kershaw took the ERA by less than a 10th of a point, while pitching in a Pitcher's park. He's pitching in Dodgers stadium (and for a team with a worse offense/worse defense to boot), and suddenly Halladay's putting up an ERA 0.2 lower than Kershaw, just from park effects. Does that offset the strikeouts?
  14. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) So would this be a hire you could get excited about? Are you kidding, I'd buy the "Sveum" plan just to be able to have his name roll off my tongue. Sveum. Sveum. Sveum. Sveum!
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 03:16 PM) Bush>Clinton Were there any new ethics rules passed between those 2 points that could explain the difference? Or did Congress just get dumber?
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 11:22 AM) How Congress gets to trade on insider info... http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=738...n%3BcbsCarousel Apparently a couple economists from MIT put out numbers on Congress's publicly known stock trades earlier this summer. They found that in the 1990's, Congress was uncannily good at making money on trades, but between 2004 and 2008 the members of Congress underperformed the market by 2-3%.
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 03:03 PM) Great posts. The Niners aren't flashy...but they're very solid. They're very 2005 Bears-ish... Based on this thread, I conclude that they stink and are very lucky .
  18. Spain jumps in and says "Dont' forget about us!"
  19. The equally unscientific poll of bloggers actually had Halladay with a slight win.
  20. A guy with bench coaching experience? What an epic fail.
  21. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 02:35 PM) You're nuts. Who out of that group is close to being fired? None of them. They'd have to be absolutely wretched the next 2 seasons and I don't see how that's possible. Coughlin has been on a tightrope forever. The 2 Harbaughs and Smith are pretty much right where Wisenhunt was 2 years ago.
  22. Crackup of the day. -Herman Cain.
  23. New British PM comes in pledging budget cutbacks to balance the budget. Does so. My side sits around watching, saying "The budget cutbacks are just going to push you back into recession and your budget hole will get bigger, not smaller." Conservatives scoff. Time passes. Evidence comes in. I say we do the exact same thing in the U.S. That's not insanity, since there's water between the 2 places.
  24. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 02:25 PM) That's why we will be underachievers again, but retooling - again. You don't know if someone will take them until you try The best way to get someone to take them is to have them come out next year and get off to good starts.
  25. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 02:23 PM) That is so ironically beautiful. There is nothing beautiful about this.
