And that may be it for this version of the Brewers as competitors.

QUOTE (MAX @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 05:16 PM) I knew rex grossman would fall apart sooner or later. 4 INT crap, balta already posted that. It's ok. This is Chicago. Rex Grossman INT's used to command 20 posts each.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 04:31 PM) The media is trying like hell to nominate someone they feel is a lesser threat to Obama. Romney is that candidate. He's a pus.....hover. Could you fill in who out of this set you think is the large threat to Obama that the media is trying to shut down?

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) The way the media works, if you don't "win" in the first 3 stops, you're done. I'd like to disagree with this, but I think the best evidence for why I can't is that after the first 3-4 states last time, Nate Silver was able to take demographic voting patterns and predict the outcome of the other 47 Democratic primaries. There was that infamous 6 week campaign gap before Pennsylvania, the infamous "bitter cling to guns" and "Obama can't bowl" controversies, and despite all that campaigning, the demographics-based predictions were right on even in that state.

2011 ALCS: Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers Thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 03:02 PM) What's Texas' secret? The amazing hitting coupled with nice bullpen? What has made them the blueprint for a WS team? No coincidence 2 years in row. Finding a couple key, undervalued players through a variety of means. Hamilton from Cinci, Ogando out of a whole human trafficking case mess, Nelson Cruz from the Brewers as a throw-in along with Carlos Lee (He literally cleared waivers a couple years ago after running out of options, Colby Lewis a 1999 Rangers draft pick who departed for Japan for 2 years, Napoli an absolute gift from Toronto, a couple guys who were drafted in the early 2000's who had to endure the Tommy John procedure, and then the big haul from the Braves (Andrus, Feliz, Harrison) in the Teixeira trade. You look at this team, there are very few key parts that are guys they drafted and developed in a short time solely through their system in the past couple years.

Obama sends 100 troops to Africa to fight LRA
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 03:16 PM) Here is what's odd to me. I'm fairly certain that at any given time, the US has military assets in small numbers in probably a dozen or more countries around the globe, doing things much like this. What seems to be different here is, we're announcing it. So the question really should be, why were we told about this one? The President notified Congress of this, meaning either the Speaker of the House decided to leak it (unlikely) or they consider this a large enough campaign that it couldn't be simply run as a "Black Ops" move.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 01:53 PM) I guess his Nobel Peace Prize was getting bored and needed to be involved in yet another war. Do you think Code Pink will protest THIS one? They still stuck on Bush and Cheney, but wont say a peep about der komander getting us involved in even more conflicts. What is this, 6, 7 countries we're now actively fighting/bombing? I'm war-protested-out. Maybe a top tier tax hike and a few large banks broken up would reenergize me.

QUOTE (OilCan @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 12:05 AM) Just watched Thor for the first time. WOW. Should have seen it in the theatre. One question...How does Thor return to Earth for The Avengers movie? I'm not a Thor comic book reader, so I dunno. Thx. This hasn't been answered yet. Presumably that must be explained during the Avengers.

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 08:20 AM) It is harder to control his message on the national stage. I'm frankly very surprised he hasn't been better prepared. I hope it is just a matter of him entering late and other candidates having more time to get adjusted, organized, and comfortable. "Oh, he's just not ready for prime time" doesn't sound to me like a strong defense. The first ballots are cast in 2.5 months.

2011 ALCS: Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers Thread
QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 15, 2011 -> 10:31 PM) Well, there you have it. I thought Francona added very little, including analysis just as obvious as McCarver...honestly, when managers and coaches come on and do these things it really disappoints me because I envision them having a lot more interesting knowledge, and then it turns out they seem to know pretty much the same as you or I... I like when they what the origin of the word "cheese" was, when used in the context of someone's fastball. First, Francona says he thinks he knows who coined the term, and cites Dennis Eckersley. Then, when Joe Buck tells him it was first used in the mid-19th century, Francona says "oh, I guess I was only 40 years off." The best part of his two nights was when Joe asked him if it was harder than he thought. Francona responded by saying "I really want to chew, and I really want to curse at will. " See, that whole middle paragraph...that's so like Hawk except he's not rooting for my team and has no catch phrases or quirks.

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 15, 2011 -> 08:59 PM) Ahh, Kap, how can you not agree that Perry's strength is stump speeches and TV ads? He's avoided debates all these years because he sucks at them. Sanchez crushed him when they got side by side so Perry stopped. Hell he even paled next to Bill White. He gets elected by stumping and media spots. Stumping and media spots can only win if you can at least hold your ground in debates and on the talk shows when MTP gives you the "who is the leader of Venezuela" style trick question. So far he has been an utter failure on both. He needs to at least get above cringe-worthy in those cases. Otherwise you'll get the Sarah Palin "I read all the newspapers" treatment.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 15, 2011 -> 10:08 PM) I always get into an argument with people about McCarver. I don't get the ire...I think he is a bit hokey, but for the vast majority of the viewing audience, I think he makes excellent points. I've listened to just about everyone else they've had doing these games, and with the exception of maybe Brenly, I find McCarver to be infinitely more listenable. I'd rather have Edwin jackson in the booth . Seriously, i find it so much easier to follow the game with other color men. When Francona was in there you got legit strategy, discussions of the managers and players thoughts...the stuff I like best about Stoney. McCarver in the booth is like Hawk except without te clear bias and rooting interest on my side. And no good catch phrases. And a nasty habit of being proven instantly wrong (see October 23, 2005).
