  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 15, 2011 -> 04:46 PM) They do have money coming off but, in a lot of instances, it goes right back into the current payroll due to raises. I did some arbitrary figures a while back and basically came up with them cutting less than $10 million from next year's payroll. That's probably not even going to be enough to get Carlos Pena. It's almost certain that Aramis will be a free agent and not pick up his player option, that should be big.
  2. I really hope this isn't one of those classic Indiana 58-0 losses.
  3. Physics as we know it appears to have survived. And the problem with the original experiments? Relativity.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 07:36 PM) The challengers school of thought is that those are later generations failing at replicating what had already been done. But let's note...they succeeded, quite dramatically in many cases. The Step Pyramid, although its not the size of Giza, is a large temple complex that was clearly constructed during the lifetime of one leader. Many of the large temples like the ones Egypt had to move out of the way of Lake Nasser were clearly Egyptian designs. If someone wants to argue that the Egyptians could never have built a pyramid...they did. If someone wants to argue that its really hard to build them that quickly...true, it is really hard...but all we're asking now is whether the techniques from the first ones could scale up. Yes, placing a block every 5 minutes is hard, but so is placing a block every 2 hours or whatever was required for the smaller structures. If the things can be built at smaller scales, then scaling up just requires manpower and practice.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 15, 2011 -> 11:02 AM) I can't see him doing that...not only would he hurting his Sox legacy, but then he'd be going to the Cardinals main rival as well. Not just that though...he'd also be going to a team with arguably no shot at winning in the next 2 years. They might have a legit shot if they can land both Pujols and Buehrle...but that's a $40 million a year commitment that we're talking about...and that team would still look darn weak.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 11:48 PM) I'd want job security and money if I had been in his shoes. He was on thin ice the last few years. Job security could also have been had by doing his job well.
  7. Good work Matrix people
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 09:04 PM) Absolutely. Or they could pay him to stay home and not work at all. I'm going to go offer to chip in to Bostons payroll if they send Theo somewhere other than the Cubs. Not because I'm afraid of him...just to rip their hearts out once more.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 07:37 PM) Unless you are teaching socialism, yes Every damn post you're off. I don't think I've had any day this bad in here.
  10. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 08:11 PM) They removed him from the 40 man roster. He's still in AAA unless he's free agent eligible. Doesn't he have to clear waivers to be removed from the 40 man?
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 07:38 PM) Not yet, no. Sounds like Theo and the Cubs are done, but Boston and the Cubs are not. If 2 teams are competing for him...can the Red Sox decide where he goes?
  12. By the way, I didn't get to note this while I was gone, but we're now up to 2 separate Bush-administration era programs which involved the government smuggling U.S. guns across the mexican border in order to track the gun-smuggling pathways. Apparently this has been standard operating procedure for >5 years.
  13. I would object more strongly to Stewart in the bullpen next year than I did to Sale in the bullpen this year, and I flat out hated Sale in the bullpen this year. I'd rather have the illegitimate son of Brian Bruney's right arm and Randy Williams's left arm in the bullpen than Stewart next year. He is a converted starter and has only been starting for a brief period. Moving him into the bullpen again totally undoes any chance of actually having him stick long-term as a starter, and as a sinkerballer, he's a much better fit for a starting role than a bullpen role if he can get into the ground ball groove. If he's not ready to be a major league starter in spring training (and he's not ready right now) then he needs to start at AAA. If the team isn't going to do that, they might as well just cut him, because they're not even trying to build long-term and he's not going to succeed next year in a bullpen role.
  14. One other thing worth remembering is that within Egypt itself, we can actually see them learn to build on their way to the structures at the Giza plateau. There are the older step pyramids. There is also at least 1 complete failure of a pyramid, the collapsed pyramid. There is also the "Bent pyramid" which may reflect a pyramid which became unstable mid-construction causing the construction angle to change. This was literally an industry refined over a period of centuries before construction began at Giza.
  15. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 06:24 PM) There are three pyramids supposedly built in this timeframe. The Great Pyramid had approximately 2.5 million stones alone. I think that is why your math is not adding up. The guy you cited also gave 30 years, which increases the time again. If nothing else...at least don't cite a page which says that 2.5 million stones in 30 years would have required placement every 90 seconds. The page you cited literally cannot do simple math. His exact setup gives 378 seconds per stone, not 90.
  16. Is it allowed for people to kindly suggest some, or to post links to lists of the movies, without adding their personal rankings?
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 06:09 PM) Explain to me the scientific process involved in the recording of events say, 5,000 years ago. It's iffy...but there are a few texts that date back nearly that far and tell fairly detailed historical accounts which can be matched up with archaeological information. For example, there's very plausibly a solid correlation between the 3 days of darkness referred to in the Bible and the eruption of the Greek Island of Santorini.
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 06:08 PM) I read the same thing on Wikipedia, Balta. There are other theories... Link Do the math yourself man. 20 years = 6 x 10^8 seconds. 2 million stones in 6 x 10 ^8 seconds is 315 seconds per stone. 315 seconds is 5 minutes, 15 seconds.
  19. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 04:26 PM) The 2005 White Sox say hello. (and before you tell me that's 2005 dollars, check out the table) 2005 Baseball Payrolls Have you ever heard the phrase "inflation-adjusted"?
  20. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 06:02 PM) I'd love to hear the scientific process involved in history, especially, anything written prior to 1900. You know, some of our best records for volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and weather comes from written records. The Royal Navy in particular was wonderful at this, they spent centuries recording the noontime water temperature in the exact same way. We know when a whole lot of events happened from historical records...and then when we check things like the date of the rock, age dates of fires, superposition of earthquake layers, things work surprisingly well.
  21. Do I have to become a high school football fan if I can score a job in Texas?
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 05:30 PM) It's not just a manner of knowing how...it's a matter of it being physically impossible and completely illogical to do some of the things that they did. What is it, the Great Pyramid of Giza that supposedly was built in 20 years? It's been calculated that they would have had to place a new stone every THREE SECONDS for it to have been built in that time frame. Impossible. I don't think anyone is trying to convince anyone else of these "crank" theories. All we're pointing out is that the mainstream science is full of just as much crank as the non-mainstream theories. You're off by an order of magnitude here. 20 years of construction would have required about a block every 5 minutes.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2011 -> 03:36 PM) To follow up... PeteAbe Pete Abraham by espnchijon Henry acknowledges that Theo has spoken with "another team" and has permission to do so Wait, so this isn't done yet?
