QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 01:36 PM) I know that. Real cuts need to wait until we recover. Real increases need to wait as well. We can't spend our way to Europe. You're right, we actually can't, we have our own currency.

Fix This Pitching Staff Or Else . . .
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 12:52 PM) That's fine. But you do realize whatever pitching we potentially could acquire for any of the guys you want dealt would not be major-league ready, right? We're not getting a Drew Pomeranz, Matt Moore or Julio Teheran. I think targeting guys in A-ball is exactly what the Sox need to do. They don't have a whole lot of position openings next year, because they have guys who have performed at some positions and guys who are way overpaid at others. Stock the low levels. Teams are much more willing to part with high ceiling guys if they're down in A ball. They're more likely to implode, but one success can make a franchise for 10 years.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:47 AM) We saw the same whack jobs at anti-war rallies call for Bush and Cheney's deaths during the Bush administration. We have seen far left nuts blow up car dealerships in the name of environmentalism. The big difference is that one group is painted as representing the whole, and the other group is painted as a fringe. So much so that people now believe they are the mainstream. If a Democratic politician stood up on stage and said how he supported blowing up car dealerships, would a Democratic crowd cheer or boo? If a Democrat stood on stage and said that a polluter ought to die, would the crowd cheer or boo? If a Democratic politician was given a hypothetical involving jailing someone for pollution, would the crowd yell out "Let him die!"?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:43 AM) Ok? You're still stereotyping a LOT of people based on a very small minority. But this is nothing new. You guys have been doing this since the summer of 2009. And, just to note...we've had an ample supply of these people to go off of since 2008 (you can go back farther to the "Kill him!" and "Terrorist!" yells at the Palin rallies). It's really impressive how well traveled this small minority is where they show up all the time and keep filling audiences.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:22 AM) So when the news shows a bunch of Muslims jumping up and down in front of a crashed US helicopter, or there are mass celebrations for attacks on US (or generally, the West) targets, I can assume you'll be fine with me concluding that all Muslims are terrorists that hate America and the West and want them to die. Yes? The crowd last night roundly booed Ron Paul for saying "This whole idea that the whole Muslim world is responsible for this, and they’re attacking us because we’re free and prosperous, that is just not true.”

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:35 AM) Good debate questions shouldn't intentionally set up candidates in a lose-lose scenario I think they should, especially if they're structured so that the options are "anger a large majority of middle of the road people" versus "angering your party's base".

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:33 AM) It seems like it. It's a terrible question mean to trap the candidate into providing either a morally reprehensible answer (let him die!) or forcing a more nuanced or equivocal position that the tea party crowd wouldn't react well to. Um, isn't that exactly what a good debate question should do?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:31 AM) That's just an extremely insulting hypothetical in the first place. What percentage of people fit this mold? Less than 1%? People don't pay for health care because they can't afford it. Was Wolf just baiting the audience and the candidates with this ridiculous scenario? It's not a crazy scenario, a fair number of people decide to forego health insurance for that reason, and if you remove the possibility of rejection for pre-existing conditions that becomes a key flaw in the system...where you can go without insurance until you get really sick.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 12, 2011 -> 04:15 PM) Does it really matter? If there actually WOULD be increased overtime, or hires, it wouldn't offset the 500 jobs lost, but only a portion of them. That still leaves more people without jobs. It was asked for, and here is a specific regulation that is going to cost jobs. Actually, now that I've had the chance to look at this more...several analysts are on record saying that these plants were going to be closing anyway because they've been undercut by natural gas prices. They have a very high debt load and have taken over $12 billion in write-downs as a company since the move that acquired those plants about 5 years ago. The company has an enormous debt load from the acquisition of these plants ($40 billion or so) and their revenue stream keeps weakening. Given that Texas is producing prodigious amounts of natural gas from formations that couldn't have been accessed 5+ years ago when the buyout happened...it's not a stretch to say that this company is trying to recover some of its losses on the acquisition by blaming the EPA.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:13 AM) Ah yes, example #1. Well, at least we know 1 thing...when you see a crowd that cheers loudly for 350 executions, and people in a separate crowd yell "Let him die" in a hypothetical case about insurers...you don't feel those are disturbing enough to criticize...but if anyone generalizes from those crowds at all to say, the rest of the political group...you immediately rise to their defense.

If I re-post the video of the crowd last week giving their loudest cheer of the night to Rick Perry's total number of executions, is that enough to establish that they're a Mongol Hoard beyond a reasonable doubt, or are we just at a preponderance of evidence?

Who is your guy for the GOP nomination?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:02 AM) Last time around, Romney wasn't the only candidate who didn't look and sound legitimately crazy. Really, McCain, 9iu11ani, Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee came off as at the Bachmann/Perry level? I don't buy that.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:42 AM) Sean Casey was on the radio last week saying that as you get older, you do have to adjust your routine. It's not shocking, but he basically guaranteed that his good buddy Dunn would be altering his routine. It's also entirely possible that he changed up his routine some between moving to another city and being without a contract for a couple months. Maybe he took October and November completely off from everything so that he wouldn't pull a muscle prior to signing a contract.- Quietly so no one sees . . .
Perhaps you're mistaking me for someone who, um, doesn't sunburn as easy?- Who is your guy for the GOP nomination?
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:42 AM) Plus Romney has a gigantic stockpile of money. There was an odd effect with Mittens's fundraising in 2008 that might well be repeating itself now...he scored a big early fundraising lead in 2008 from a handful of friendly business donors and Mormons maxing out their contribution to him at the start of the race, but he was never able to grow beyond that. So he started with a big fundraising lead but that quickly evaporated because he couldn't expand his donor base. Time will tell if that gigantic stockpile of money is more than a temporary blip.- Dunn is Done.
