  1. Good swing by Beckham again.
  2. QUOTE (qwerty @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:32 PM) So you are telling me you truly believe a general manager can fire a manager on a whim (can be a legitimate reason even) without running it by someone higher than himself for the final say. If you really believe that, it's simply niave. This works both ways. The general manager may have a great relationship with the manager... but if the higher ups hate the guy... he is as good as gone. It's really that simple. The same goes for all sports. Generally there is a joint decision, it's rarely ever one man, and you are right, if and when it ever is, it is indeed the majority owner. If a general manager believes that a manager should be fired and he is told no by someone in ownership, then he should resign.
  3. Close but impressive on that 2-2 hold up
  4. And somehow the Captain gets another hit.
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:26 PM) I think they'd be better off building and trying to make a run in 3-4 years... I don't think any franchise wants to commit to a 3-4 year rebuilding process. At least not if they can afford >$75 million a year. The Pirates, etc., they can commit to things like that.
  6. QUOTE (qwerty @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:20 PM) No gm has the authority to fire a manager on their own. Not a one. That is what the higher ups are there for... the final say. The GM is supposed to be the higher-up. An owner making baseball decisions is a recipe for disaster.
  7. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:17 PM) They do have some nice young players though...they need to trade Felix to the Yankees or Red Sox for some quality prospects, because they're most likely not going to be winning anything through the term of his current contract. Why? They've got Felix locked up for the next 3 years. There's no reason to think that they can't be competitive in 3 years if they make good decisions elswehre.
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:15 PM) What is Kenny "The Genius" Williams's job then? What is he responsible for? Unfortunately, no one is quite sure who actually has the authority here. Normally, you do blame the GM because the Manager isn't allowed to openly defy the GM on decisions. Otherwise, teh GM would fire the manager. It's been made abundantly clear here though that the GM does not have the authority on his own to fire the manager, the manager has extra protection thanks to the owner.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 05:05 PM) I'm glad they didn't call him up earlier. He is 2 ABs in and has 1 less hit vs. LHP than Dunn has all year. I've been in the audience in person for: Dayan Viciedo's first career HR An Adam Dunn hit against a LHP. I'm trying to figure out which of these was more special.
  10. Hey, we're in the pennant race!
  11. "OH MY GOODNESS" "LOOKED LIKE A 2 IRON GOING OUT OF HERE" -Wimpy
  12. HOW ON EARTH DID THAT BALL LEAVE THE PARK?
  13. PK14 with another shot right up the middle.
  14. Gordon was much more level on that swing
  15. Beckham has shifted up his stance. He's bending his knees more and I think he's raised his hands up. I was typing this as he swung.
  16. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 04:37 PM) They vary from a few months to a few weeks old. Do you really think Buddy Bell is going to be critical of his prospects? Dayan's defensive acumen starts and ends with his arm. Yes, I think Buddy Bell doing his job would be to say something close to the reality on players. If he's weak on defense, I'd expect him to say that he needs to continue working on it.
  17. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 04:36 PM) Unfortunately, I believe Buddy Bell thinks Viciedo has become a solid OF'er. I have no faith that Buddy Bell could distinguish a solid defensive OF'er from one who was not. How on Earth are you coming to that evaluation? What player has Buddy Bell said is a solid defensive OF who has then come up and played defense like Juan Pierre?
  18. QUOTE (Cubano @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 04:34 PM) Thanks. I forgot the forumer who is counting Viciedo's HR vs Frank Thomas. Every time I see that I laugh. If he can come close to that, he needs a statue next to Minnie. Yeah, if Viciedo is in the range of 450 home runs as a White Sox player...I think we'd trade that for a statue.
  19. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 04:32 PM) Impartial scouting reports say otherwise. He will be tolerable out there if he hits.Serious question...how many of those scouting reports are up to date as of the middle of this season such that they would actually prove Buddy Bell wrong there?
  20. How did that ball fly that far? That looked like a popup off the bat.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 04:27 PM) So can we finally ditch the idea that abortion isn't being used as birth control? As soon as the Republicans get over the idea that pregnancy is a good punishment.
  22. Very large splatter radius on fried chicken.
