Who starts for Sox in '12
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 12:42 PM) I can only think of Peavy, Floyd, Humber, Sale, and Stewart. Who else is under Sox control next season? John Danks, for one. Secondly, there's still a pretty darn good shot of M-56 coming back in most people's opinion.

Get it over with and let Buehrle go to Yanks/Red Sox
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 12:06 PM) Isn't MB a type A? We better get more than just fodder. Don't worry, the whole concept behind this thread is nuts.

Dunn
QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 12:41 PM) + 1 Regarding retirement, from Dunn's standpoint, I believe his contract is backloaded so the real big paydays come in '13 and '14. I am sure it's not easy to say no to an additional $32M or whatever it is for those last two years. Despite it all I know I'd be tempted to take the money. Who knows what will happen but frankly I cannot see him rebounding from this as it appears its a perfect storm of diminishing skills/bat speed and him going mental at the same time. He also looks like he doesn't miss a meal as well, which doesn't help matters. It's $15 million a year in 2013 and 2014, $30 total.

Quentin to the DL, Viciedo up
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 12:28 AM) I saw the play on which he got hurt and there's not much he could have done to prevent that. I haven't even read about his injury anyway? What is it? If we were in the race would he even have been DL'ed? Just asking. I think he's a good hitter on a team with hardly any good hitters. Tank, DeAza and Rios is way worse than Tank, DeAza and CQ wouldn't you say?? Yes, there's no situation where Quentin wouldn't have been sent to the DL. This is a sprained shoulder.

Fan dies after fall at Rangers game
Thankfully there is nothing inherently dangerous about the design of this ballpark and anyone who suggests that there is should just shut up.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 11:30 PM) I'm still amazed at national radio n national play by play guys. They still use batting average, homers and RBIs as THE ONLY stats. I was listening to a show and they were going over the Yankees' batting averages. I always think of this board and how nobody cares about batting average. Pierre to most of the baseball world is having a very good year. His final year as a White Sox ... I tip my cap to him. And believing that Juan Pierre has had a very good year is part of the problem. This offense has been awful. Juan pierre has been adequate at best on offense. He's not why the offense has been awful. But he has no ability to cover for anyone else struggling. If Juan Pierre was having a truly great year, this would be a much better offense. (ditto for his defense) Hell, even a "classic stats" person would say he's been awful and utterly useless on the basepaths.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 11:14 PM) Pierre BTW is hitting .287. If this was 10 years ago, without sabesmania, he'd be considered a freaking stud at .287. And no one could figure out how an offense could be this bad with that leadof talent at the top.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 11:04 PM) Lilly's a cool elf. You see that first pitch hack? He was guessing and missed it a mile, but his home run approach at the plate is entertaining for a little guy. Against an arm like Pineda, some guessing is required

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 10:39 PM) Ryan Braun: "Gee, this guy is making more than Evan Longoria and myself combined this year." The rest of the league is much more likely to feel disbelief than jealousy or whatever it is that you're trying to suggest they'd feel. 10 years of performing like Dunn did and that's a fair contract. No one is going to begrudge him for the arbitration rules.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 10:09 PM) If you are going to write about it, it should be correct. Newspapers dont enforce that rule in any othe section, Why should the standard be higher for sports?

QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 09:52 PM) Too many heads games played by Williams and Guillen. They had a superstar in the making and just couldn't help trying to put their imprint on him. It's criminal what this organization has done to Gordon Beckman. If you had Gordon Beckham starting at the beginning of 2009, and you were either of these 2 guys, what would you have done differently?

QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 09:46 PM) This year's lightening in a bottle project fizzled out faster than even I figured it would. Then you didn't bother looking at his history. It's not surprising that a guy who has thrown 140 innings, mostly in the minors, each of the last 3 years would hit a wall after pitching 120-ish innings in the big leagues this year. Especially considering that his problem early in the season was that he'd hit a wall around the 5th-6th inning and tire out.

Quentin to the DL, Viciedo up
QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 09:39 PM) If this guy is projected to be the savior, this organization is going to be in free fall for a long time There is a legit shot of Dayan Viciedo being an offensive savior. It's certainly not guaranteed. No prospect is. But betting on him to be a savior is not a bad gamble.

Dunn
QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 09:28 PM) Williams got what he deserved. He took it out on Edwin Jackson that he wasn't flipped last summer for Dunn - couldn't wait to get rid of him. After Kenny realized had been played yet again, he ends up signing Manny to that fiasco of a contract Had Dunn come last summer and turned out to be the colossal stiff he is, no way does Kenny sign him and all that money, He didn't want Jackson around to remind him of one of his many category 5 blunders and of course Rios is right there too. Problems with this post. 1. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Manny Ramirez to that contract. Kenny Williams claimed the last shards of him last year. 2. Adam Dunn still put up an .800+ OPS last year in the 2nd half. Kenny Williams might well have resigned him. 3. Acquiring Adam Dunn would have cost the White Sox Dayan Viciedo in 2010. In that case, the White Sox would have almost been forced to keep Dunn around...just to cover for the fact that they had lost their only remaining hitting prospect. 4. The Edwin Jackson trade-away was actually a solid deal and I'm still content with it. That might well prove to be Kenny Williams's best deal since 2008.

QUOTE (ottawa_sox @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 06:22 PM) Surely at this stage we can dispense with the righty lefty matchups when Dunn is involved. We might be able to. Ozzie Guillen cannot.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 27, 2011 -> 07:56 PM) I do...if he struggles again next season, I think he retires. Yeah. I have to agree with this. It has to be hard as Hell to go through this, even if you're being paid well.
