Quentin to the DL, Viciedo up
Wow. The appropriate reaction is to insult the kid? Holy F***.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 09:35 PM) Team doesn't have it any more. Saw no use for it. What, shaving cream? I guess a lot of them have grown out beards

Quentin to the DL, Viciedo up
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 08:43 PM) Let's hope not because his trade value will be next to nothing. Not that it hasn't taken a major hit since the deadline. To me it's inexcusable that he wasn't moved at the deadline and that Jackson was. When you have Viciedo in the wings as a replacement, it's darn near a firable offense. You're fully right. This was why you should have traded Carlos for the best offer you could get. Because yet again, can't finish a season.

Hurricane Irene & the hurricane season
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 07:26 PM) Flooding will be a huge issue. We've already gotten between 9 and 13 inches of rain this month, and the ground is saturated. Adding another 6 or 7 inches to that is not going to make things good. Expect your sewers to back up and any pump you have to lose power.

Thome accepts trade back to Cleveland
By the way, this also means somehow that the Indians are going to kill the White Sox the rest of this season.

Hurricane Irene & the hurricane season
QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 06:15 PM) fortunately I live far above the hudson river - though i can see it from my apt. I'm probably a good 50-100 feet above, with a highway below, closer to the river, and then a cliff. Plus I'm on the west side of the island, so if there's a safe place in manhattan, it's my apartment. Just gonna batten down the hatches, cover the windows, and I've got a few days worth of water+food. I'll letcha all know how it goes. If you can do it...when the storm is a few hours from hitting, do what that previous person said and fill up everything you can with potable water. Any spare plastic bottles you have, bathtub, sink, whatever you can find. Anything and everything. If I were going into this, a "few days" of water is less than I'd have. In the L.A. area, a good Earthquake rule of thumb is at least 3 gallons per person per day, so a family of 4 is nearly 100 gallons for a week (You need a gallon to drink but then you'll find you need water for all sorts of other things. Cleaning off after walking through sewage laden water, cleaning wounds, whatever). Worst thing that happens if you overdo it is you have to dump it all out. In the event of things being Katrinesque, you can go 2 weeks without food, but you cannot afford to run out of drinking water. And you never know how unprepared anyone around you might be.

Hurricane Irene & the hurricane season
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 06:38 PM) I live about a quarter mile from the Delaware, but on a hill about 100 feet above the river, so I should be fine. They are expecting a surge to affect all the way up to about Trenton (which makes sense because there are tidal effects to the Delaware all the way up here, but my house should still be fine from that. 100 feet is fine in terms of the surge. Anything you have that floods during a normal rainstorm will be risky though.

Which of the underperfomers will figure it out in 2012?
Ok, I just went to the main page, saw this thread linked as "Which of the underp...", and my brain processed it as "Which of the underpants gnomes..." Damn you South Park.

Who starts for Sox in '12
Also we don't talk about Reed because he's in the same boat as Viciedo. Mysteriously not called up despite a role that he could fill.

Thome accepts trade back to Cleveland
Jim Thome is still Cleveland's career HR leader.

Hurricane Irene & the hurricane season
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) Each revised forecast is looking less and less deadly, although still very strong. It looks like that by the time it hits North New Jersey shore/NYC area it will be a weak cat 1 or just below the hurricane threshhold. I live 40 miles from the shore, and they are still predictions of 75mph gusts here and sustained winds near 50mph. Are you in a low-lying or floodprone area? If you happen to be alongside a river or something like that, it can still be a major conduit for the surge.

Sox Did Not Put in a claim on Kubel or Thome
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 04:31 PM) The supposed deadline was noon today, and gathering from the lack of chatter, I think Kenny wasn't lying about not claiming Kubel. Or he just put in a blocking claim so that Kubel couldn't be traded to a rival.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
QUOTE (vandy125 @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 04:10 PM) That may be true, but he always says that it is the right of each state to decide those issues, not the federal government. Except his own platform states that he has also endorsed a "Sanctity of Life Act.” which would put into federal law a statement that life begins at conception, thus defining abortion as murder in federal law.

Hurricane Irene & the hurricane season
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 04:07 PM) For perspectives sake, imagine taking the worst minute or two of the worst thunderstorm you have ever been in, and stretching that out to 8 to 12 hours worth of the same intensity. Mother nature is not to be messed with. And then imagine that the ocean rises up 10 feet and swamps every street so that you can't get out.

Hurricane Irene & the hurricane season
QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 03:53 PM) I'm sitting here debating whether to leave or not. It'd have to be tonight, since tomorrow will be impossible with the subway closing down. I never imagined I'd be having to make these decisions while living in New York City. But I'm gonna head to the store in a bit to get non-perishable food, batteries, flashlights, water, etc... cuz I'm pretty certain we'll be without power for a while. This city is just NOT built to handle 80mph winds. It'll be very interesting to see how this all plays out... i can see the on-ramp to the George Washington Bridge from my apartment and its at a standstill. Crazy stuff. If you have somewhere to go and can actually get out, it's going to be better safe than sorry. Remember how things went for the folks who didn't/couldn't evacuate before Katrina. You can only tough it out as long as you have food and water. I don't know exactly where you live, but keeping a week's worth of fresh water in my apartment would be nearly impossible, and I'm going to at least guess that "Space" is a lot more expensive in NYC than where I live. And it might well be longer than a "While" without power if there's severe damage to say, the transmission system.

Sox Did Not Put in a claim on Kubel or Thome
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 03:18 PM) Do you really think so? I guess he is pretty much limited to AL only and part-time DH at that because of his back issues. There was a day when a premier pinch hitter was valued ala Smokey Burgess but not anymore I guess In the NL...a premier pinch hitter can still be useful...but it's a severe weakness if said pinch hitter can't play the field because you can't double-switch. So you wind up with wonderful things like Kotsay playing center field for the Brewers (happened repeatedly this season) or Giambi coming in at 1b for the Rockies. In the AL, the only way a guy could last as a part time DH and pinch hitter is if the team has another part time DH who is also useful in the field (Think Andruw Jones for us last year). In that case, the part time DH is just taking up the normal DH roster spot. Otherwise, you just can't afford it with 4 roster spots for backups.

Virginia Earthquake
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 02:46 PM) Its not quite God, but I will accept "Fraking" for the win. http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com/2011/08...-caused-va.html Thankfully I've got Pat Robertson to at least make the 2 sides of the aisle even on embarrassing crazy.

Hurricane Irene & the hurricane season
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 10:04 AM) Isn't NYC's Subway system already pretty prone to flooding? NYC has officially announced that they will shut down their public transportation systems at noon tomorrow, and ordered mandatory evacuations from low lying areas.

2011 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 02:43 PM) Maybe your brain should have thought similar thoughts about Adam Dunn back in May or June. I'm pretty sure I did. Most of them were posted here. I think my reaction to Dunn actually homering in Anaheim in May was "oh, so that's what that looks like." I think Dunn just doesn't get as angry at my brain.

2011 MLB Catch-All Thread
On Tuesday, I flipped on the Rangers/Red Sox game because the Sox were on late and I thought "hmmm, here's a playoff preview". Adrian Gonzalez came up to the plate. They showed his stats, he was hitting right around .333, but only had 18 home runs. I thought to myself..."man, this guy hit 40 in Petco, he's got the average up there now but the power has really gone away." Somehow, I think he heard my brain think that.

Dunn
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 01:54 PM) I know a lot of people think this is all mental and because of that, Dunn should be back to what he was next year. I don't understand how anyone could come to that conclusion. What is sitting around all winter going to do to rectify that? If anything, I'd rather it be something physical, then healing would come into play. I do think that is the spin the Sox will use, something like he came back from his apendecomy too soon or something else and that he fought through some pain.......you know the drill. If they do, it will be a bigger indictment on the organization seeing they had someone ready to go in his place. Basically, it's hope. And a realistic aknowledgement that if Dunn isn't back to close to the usual Dunn next year, we're not going to be fielding a winning team.

Who starts for Sox in '12
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2011 -> 01:28 PM) Nope, and he even replied to a different tweet. I don't think he really knows. Any idea who could actually answer that question? If he doesn't know explicitly then I'm going to be he pulled that out of his arse without really knowing how the contract/arbitration details work out. If someone had told him that Humber would be a FA he would have easily just said "I heard that from the team". The fact that he coudln't tells me that's just him not knowing the system.
