  1. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 10:11 AM) This assumes that they've taken the same exact safety precautions that we have. Even then, in light of what happened in Japan, the US is going to undergo a ton of new regulations and safety spending on our nuclear facilities -- this I guarantee. Correction; that's not the assumption I'm making. The assumption in any comparison to the U.S. is that the calculation of risk by the engineers is done the same way. That I believe is true. Both nations set a basis for the level of event the reactor has to endure without releasing radiation above a certain level. In the past 24 hours I've gotten that information from the TVA about their 5+ nuclear plants presented on my evening news. That is the standard for approval...it has to be able to take a certain level event without releasing more radiation than a specified level. This plant took an event on the scale that should have been expected, and has now released significantly more radiation than the standard. That is the comparison.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 09:55 AM) Gonzales says Charlotte. The team continues its aggressive promotion policy.
  3. A worthwhile note from the UCS... The melting down reactor(s) in Japan have now released significantly more radiation than their "Design-basis" level... Translated...when they were proposed, there was an estimate of the largest amount of radiation that could possibly have been released in any accident or combination of accidents at the plant. These estimates are standard practice in nuclear plant construction, and are part of the basis on whether or not a plant is approved. The plant has already released more radiation than that level. To me, this is strong evidence that the safety projections simply cannot anticipate complex failure mechanisms.
  4. Can you please tell me other things I've heard of so that I can keep a list?

At this point, they've moved into "vague pronouncement of risk but bad enough that you don't want to read between the lines" territory. It sounds like there's a serious risk now of a full failure of containment of reactor number 2. And the people who are pronouncing things fine are also saying stay indoors and don't use your air conditioning.
  6. F*** my knees and my lungs.
  7. QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 04:13 AM) I don't think that Jorge can do that! Oh yes! Jorge Cantu!!! Nancy Faust already claimed this one by playing "Anything you cantu I cantu better" when he walked to the plate.
  8. Awesome. Never heard of it
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 10:29 PM) http://wispolitics.com/index.iml?Article=230087 From: Sen.Fitzgerald Sent: Monday, March 14, 2011 3:52 PM To: *Legislative Senate Republicans Subject: Senate Democrat voting privileges in standing committees Dear Members, With the return of the Senate Democrats this weekend, questions have arisen regarding Democrat members’ participation in Senate standing committee public hearings and executive sessions. Please note that all 14 Democrat senators are still in contempt of the Senate. Therefore, when taking roll call votes on amendments and bills during executive sessions, Senate Democrats’ votes will not be reflected in the Records of Committee Proceedings or the Senate Journal. They are free to attend hearings, listen to testimony, debate legislation, introduce amendments, and cast votes to signal their support/opposition, but those votes will not count, and will not be recorded. If you have any questions, feel free to contact my office. Thank you, Scott Fitzgerald Senate Majority Leader 13th Senate District Hmm...I would have figured that facing 8 recall petitions the Republicans might be interested in letting this go away rather than continuing to push the other side.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 08:05 PM) If he could be Rod Barajas as this point, you'd probably take it. A right handed Adam Dunn is a bit of a stretch. If Tyler Flowers were to get 470 at bats and strike out 70 times, he's hitting 35+ HR, not the 20 that Barajas hits. The problem with Flowers is that if you give him 470 AB's, he's likely to have 170+ strikeouts, not 70.
  11. QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 08:28 AM) NSS72/JPN, what are your thoughts from Carter´s performance in AA and his peripherals/talent going forward. Does he have the stuff for long relief, set up man, or closer? His ERA was a tad high at Birmingham last year but it seems he finally started to find his niche. He seems to have a better future as reliever rather than closer. As a starter/longman last year, I wasn't really impressed with his work when I saw him. Supposedly he's able to bring a lot better fastball to the table when he comes in for short relief, up into the mid 90's range, which suggests he's setup man/closer material.
  12. If you want to really sell that Love is a solid rebounder, look at the team rebounding stats. Minnesota is tied with the Magic for the 2nd best rebounding margin in the game currently; they average 3.1 more rebounds than the their opponent. If we say "oh the TWolves just can't shoot", that is true, but then we can look at rebounding percentage. There, the Magic get .519% of the rebounds, for 2nd in the league, and the TWolves are tied with the Lakers at .518% of their rebounds. Minnesota is a bad team that is really good on the Boards. They're just as good as Orlando. Only 1 team in the league is clearly better. Note that in neither case have I pointed out the team at the top of both categories.
  13. The NSA has been monitoring my communications since at least 2002. I think the guy who just read your post is named "Steve". At least if he's still working there.
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 06:45 PM) I reported you to the IRS. I told them you won 50,000$ playing craps in vegas, and then bought 50,000$ worth of merch from Amazon.com. I'm reporting you to the Department of Justice for filing a false complaint with the IRS.

It sounds like reactor #2 at the site, which is the 1 of the 3 damage reactors that has not yet suffered an explosion, has in the last 12 hours gone from being relatively stable to being the biggest potential crisis of the 3.
  16. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 06:29 PM) I'm going to actually have to side with StrangeSox and Balta on this taxation issue. ::::Faints::::
  17. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 06:22 PM) The problem is, my proposal is reality based. Yours is utopian based...and doesn't exist. Until the rest of the country (and world) begins to play by the same set of rules, stop pretending there is a level playing field... There isn't. And wishing there was won't make it happen. You can choose to live in reality, where businesses live...or you can go on ignoring reality. That's that. Aren't you continuing to ignore the fact that we can't magically instantaneously go from 0 states with an appropriate tax law to 50?
  18. You can't use a slippery slope argument in every case, but I think it's as clear as day there. The state gets very little, comparatively, in exchange for a $150 million a year subsidy to a company which has most of its operations out of state. Especially if you compare it to the potential value of $150 million additional spent on either education, health care, or on a more across the board tax cut.
  19. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 06:12 PM) I rephrase that to "a race to better business friendly decisions". I rephrase it to "a race to better corporate subsidies".
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 05:34 PM) No, we are pretty f***ing far ahead of those states. yeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...............

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 05:36 PM) The part about it being reclaimed land from Tokyo Bay is what really cinched it for me. Depends on what it was reclaimed with. If they dumped in a lot of boulders and then filled it with clay around it, that's different than if it was all just fine silt/clay. I also don't know the sediment types flowing into Tokyo Bay that well.
  22. Anyway...All I'm trying to say is that you can justly criticize the IL government here, but if you're going to do that, I think Amazon deserves a similar amount of criticism. Both of them made choices that hurt Amazon's affiliates, but they did that because the current situation is not a good one for the state of IL.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 05:12 PM) Well it appears most of the affiliates are trying to move their business out of state, which actually hurts Illinois more than it helps them. They really didnt add any tax revenue to their bottom line, just ousted some more business in state. A game which, as other have pointed out, only works as long as other states are willing to let Amazon freeload there.
  24. QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 05:09 PM) If it were not for the terrible injury last year, I would have pegged Jared Mitchell for one of the corner spots, oh well.. I'd doubt he'd be ready for a corner OF spot even if he had stayed healthy...he was believed to be very raw coming out of college.
