The Republican Thread
There's one problem built in to the argument you guys are making on climate change, and there's a reason why we'd classify that as anti-scientific talk. You're accepting some portion of the science...the fact that climate has changed in the past. Then you're using that as a motivation to ask "is it part of a general trend". The thing you're missing is...this is a question that has been asked thousands of times in study after study over the past few decades. That's the science part...when you see a trend, you attempt to explain that trend. You're not asking a question that hasn't been addressed. In order to be able to continue asking that question....you have to ignore all the work that has been done which says "holy **** no".

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 10:39 PM) Hawaii does seem to be the, er, . . . hot spot . . . for vulcanology. Git yer arse out there already. I spent the better part of this evening making 200+ people toast to the work Pele has done over the past week.

Investing Thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 08:58 PM) Why? I mean, that fed /ustreas money had to go somewhere. Satiating the demand for a stable investment that won't risk losing 50% of its value overnight, like all the crap Wall Street was selling for 20 years.

ST: 3/8 vs Rockies
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 06:03 PM) I agree, he needs to be in AAA OF, but I think if he did make the team, he would get 3 starts a week or so between RF and DH when a lefty is pitching. With his lack of defensive skills/experience, the abundance of DH's on this team, and the likelihood of other RH hitting OF players on the bench (Milledge or De Aza), it's hard for me to believe that Viciedo getting 3 starts a week would be worth an extra win to this team even if he hit well.

Jake Peavy Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 03:59 PM) Yeah, to not get hurt and to make sure he stays healthy. It would be better if Peavy came back late in April at 100% and healthy for the year than to break camp with the team and make 7 starts before he has to go on the 60-day. If what Pt has said is accurate, coming back early is not a question of risking repeating the injury, it's just a question of arm strength.

ST: 3/8 vs Rockies
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 05:30 PM) I think we only have him for 2 years after this one. We have him under contract for 2 more years after this one. However, if he makes the big league squad, he simply starts off like any rookie; he is under the Sox's control as a pre-arbitration player for several years, just under a rookie contract. The Sox have ~6 years of MLB pre-arb and arb-eligible years for him depending on how much time he spends in the big leagues this year. The only way he is not on the Sox in 3 years is if he is bad enough that the Sox don't want him and they grant him his release. Otherwise, we control~6 years of his MLB rights.

Gatlinburg
There's very little I'd call "Can't miss". Everything is sorta OK, aside from the whole national park. Depends on what you're into. You can get a very nice cabin or a cheap hotel and anything in-between. The restaurants are mostly ok, there's better ones down the road in Pigeon Forge. Parking is Hell. Check out the Ripleys places if you're into that. Everyone seemed to go for the pancake places for Breakfast/lunch, those were probably the closest thing to can't miss restaurants.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
Trouble is...why would any high-power coach like Jackson or even Riley make a commitment to coach that team next year when they don't even know if there will be a next year. On top of the fact that there's no guarantee you'll be able to find pieces you need in FA if the cap is made stronger.

2010-2011 NBA Thread
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Mar 6, 2011 -> 09:09 AM) Then you will have major anti-trust violations. It may be where players have to stay and extra year or two, but making it next to impossible for players to leave is a clear violation of anti-trust laws and will not be allowed by the NBAPA. No, but the NFL has teams get an extra 2 years+ via the franchise tags. In the NBA, the actual value of a superstar is so high that you wouldn't mind paying $25 million on a 1 year, franchise tag deal to keep a person like Howard off of the market.

Of course, the first premise of your argument, that "there are worse tortures so how can you complain about this" is clearly faulty. The second is then undercut by the fact that he hasn't even been sentenced to anything or found guilty by any court. It's not even punishment...it's inflicting of humiliation and psychological torture to get him to confess and testify against other people in the case (assange).

QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 6, 2011 -> 08:42 AM) Interesting. I am looking at SUVs and Audi makes a diesel Q7 that I am considering. How is the overall performance, Jason? The people I know who have diesels are similarly thrilled with their performance, although the cost per gallon at the site of the pump tends to be higher than gasoline.

Financial News
Washington Post Columnist Dana Milbank has joined the ranks of the thousands and thousands who have had their houses/money illegally stolen by a bank that conveniently makes error after error in the bank's favor. This is a reality that usually doesn't penetrate the Washington Wall at all. I wonder if this might be enough to make an impact. Probably not, just will require a few more contributions to make it go away.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 5, 2011 -> 04:55 PM) I think Milledge and Viciedo playing so much is a sign for next year. I like Teahan as a person, really do. But for the guys own sake, get him out of here. Clearly you don't.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 3, 2011 -> 11:08 AM) Bradley Manning could get the death penalty for being a whistle blower. Apparently the military has now decided that he must be almost consistently nude. Good work, torturers. I figured you were out of a job when we changed administrations. Who knew you'd just come up with a new tack? Maybe someday we'll get to add a few names from this administration to the list of people who can't leave the country without being arrested for war crimes.

QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ Mar 5, 2011 -> 03:39 PM) If they did release Teahen, how much money do they owe him? I don't know how contracts work in the MLB when a player with a large contract is cut... They'd have to pay his entire contract.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 5, 2011 -> 11:16 AM) Unfortunately, the Yukon Hybrid runs about $6-7k more than a similarly equipped non-hybrid Yukon. So you're talking about a 6-8 year recapture on a 10k miles per year car. Obviously, as you drive more, or the price of gas increases, you're seeing a faster recapture time. Also the more city driving you do, you recapture more. The more stop and go your normal drive is, the more effective.

Dunn to hit third in White Sox spring opener
QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Mar 4, 2011 -> 08:00 PM) I know, I know... just kidding. I'd think we'd at least wait until the regular season starts before we try that. I have to assume Dunn's only gonna play 1B when Paulie needs a rest. They seemed to convince themselves (including PK14) that having PK14 DH once a week and having Kotsay play 1b was key to the season Paulie had last year. If they signed a guy like Dunn who can play 1b and then didn't do that, if for no other reason than because PK14 felt liked it helped, they'd be nuts.
