Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 03:00 PM) No it isn't. If you increase the amount of fines to a large amount on companies that hire illegals, and clean up the process of determining if someone is a citizen, it eliminates the problem. If there aren't jobs for illegals, they won't come here. It is why we have already seen a large number of people head back home because of this recession. If you actually make it a determent to hire illegals, companies will stop doing it. And as i noted...the number of employer checks has increased by a factor of 4 since the new administration started, and it hasn't made a dent. Saying that if there aren't jobs for them they won't come really is a slogan and nothing more...because you're flat out pretending that it's possible to get rid of the jobs. The level of enforcement that it would take to catch part time contract workers who jump from position to position or who work in sweatshops that the government knows nothing about is staggering.

Chipper Jones tears ACL... probably done
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 02:54 PM) If people are talking about Omar Vizquel being a Hall of Famer, then Andruw Jones absolutely has to be one too. He was as good as Vizquel defensively, but was a much, much better offensive player. Vizquel did it for twice as long though.

Teahan rehab could be great for the sox
QUOTE (Cali @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 02:40 PM) I'm others have figured this out, cause I'm slow as hell, but they're just gonna keep Teahen in AAA under the guise of getting him reps at multiple positions so he can be super utility, when in reality they are waiting until Sept. 1st to call him up when rosters expand and wont have to deal with explaining how Kotsay gets to stay on the team.... They can't do that unless someone else goes on the DL. Teahen's rehab assignment has to end on about the 19th (If the date NSS quoted yesterday is accurate).

8/12 White Sox vs Twins
QUOTE (Sox72 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 02:33 PM) But how does that affect the approach he takes to the plate? Assuming the other poster is correct in saying he just swings as hard as he can. If he's worn out/not as strong as he used to be, he may just be swinging hard at everything because that's all he can do.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 02:31 PM) Its not fantasy - you are saying that because up to now the small increases haven't had a huge effect, that means that all the methods I mentioned won't work. If you do all of them in concert, they will work, to an extent - and that is all I am saying. No one is suggesting that ANY method will fully fix the problem. And that extent...maybe 4-5% of them per year if we're really, really good...thereby doubling our current enforcement effectiveness...at a cost of what, say $30 billion, $40 billion a year? You say that we're somehow not doing those things in concert enough...but that's pretty much exactly what we are doing...heavy enforcement on the border, massive increases in workplace checks, increasing levels of ID checks for terrorism purposes, and still not a dent. And that still ignores the fact that the more you make immigrants suspicious of police...the worse of a crime problem you create. I don't think you're taking into account here how far we truly have to go. $20 billion a year and the only reason why we're even coming close to keeping up with the amount trying to enter is that the economy here has gone in the toilet. I'm starting to think I need to add "arresting immigrants" to "blowing things up" on my list of things where spending doesn't really count.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 02:20 PM) My argument is that it will cost WAY more to keep everyone here. Not to mention, if done correctly, it will cost way less than that. Go back to the methods that NSS was talking about that don't have high enforcement costs. As I noted...they're already being done and the impact is very limited. The current efforts are getting 2-3% per year. 2 to 3 %, depending on your total number. Increasing the spending by 33% has still left us in the 2 to 3% range. And of course, none of that takes into account the legitimate economic hit that you'd take by removing people who do spend money here and so forth. Saying that there are low cost ways to remove them is absolute fantasy.

Teahan rehab could be great for the sox
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 02:17 PM) So the best argument for Teahen is half of a DH/1B platoon with Viciedo next year. The problem with that is Viciedo's never going to learn how to be a big league hitter playing 1-3 games per week. In the last 10 days, the scouting reports have caught up with him and it's very hard to adjust as a part-time player. I really don't want to see Teahen in the OF either, although he would be a SLIGHT improvement over Quentin, it would definitely not be strengthening our OF defense compared to using Andruw Jones out there. If we want to use this rotating DH setup next year with a similar roster makeup, bringing back Vizquel, Konerko, and Jones, along with Viciedo, Quentin, and Teahen as pieces to do it...that's potentially a very effective way to pull it off.

Teahan rehab could be great for the sox
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 02:09 PM) The only way he serves the White Sox as any type of "value" in the line-up is playing RF/DH/1B and hitting at LEAST a 775 OPS clip, that's a minimum number. To do that, he's got to walk a ton, hit a LOT of doubles and 15-18 homers. That's a tall task, considering he's only done it once for about 4 months of a season, not even a full/complete year. And that's ONCE in his entire big league history. Against RHP in his career he has a .769 OPS. Against LHP though it's only .700. And his splits this year are insane....800 OPS against RHP, .366 OPS against LHP.

What moves have come back to bite Kenny?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 02:06 PM) RHP Daniel Cortes' name has come up again this season for his career again being on an upward track, I haven't even looked up his stat line...I think it was him and Lumsden in the MacDougal trade. Cortes has been stuck at AA since late in 2008 and has put up WHIP numbers of about 1.55 since the start of the 2009 season. His ERA this year is over 5. He's off in Seattle's org now, appearing to just be roster filler.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 01:55 PM) Which leads the other side to state, correctly, that deporting 20 million people en masse is entirely impractical. I think the best solution to this, really, is a combination of very tough enforcement on businesses, federally mandated rules on provision of identification used for any federal purpose, laws disallowing various services to illegal immigrants where practical, and finally, deportation to the extent reasonably possible. Do all those things, and you will make it such that many people will leave on their own, and few new ones will come in. Its not a perfect solution, but its workable. Y'all ought to know my reply to that by now...it's to take 2k5's favorite argument, that it's expensive. We've conducted more workplace employer immigration audits since Obama took office than happened during W's entire presidency, we've dramatically increased expenditures on border security up to about $20 billion up from about $15 billion in 2008 and $13 billion in 2005, and we're on pace to catch and deport about 400k immigrants this year (including those caught in the process of trying to cross). Despite nearly doubling expenditures since 2005, the amount of deportations has only increased by about 33%. Even if I assumed a linear cost per immigrant..to get rid of 15 million at that going rate is a price of $750 billion, assuming no further crossings happen (which of course is silly). Increasing efforts on employers has happened. It doesn't make a big dent. Making the police go after every immigrant they can not only is dangerous for everyone, it's going to be just as expensive. Most of the things you argue in favor of are being done...with small associated increases in removals and cost increases that would outrage people if it was spent on health care or keeping teachers employed. There is no workable solution until the demand for workers is satisfied.

What moves have come back to bite Kenny?
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 01:14 PM) From 2005 to 2006 the team ERA went up something like a run. That was the problem then. Part of that in 2006 was that our CF for 1/2 the year couldn't catch a ball if it landed in his glove. (also worth noting...even though that team was hurt most by the degradation of the pitching staff...Vazquez really didn't help improve it that much....and even ignoring the pitching, the offense was severely hampered in a number of games by having #8-#9 hitters who were complete black holes that couldn't turn the lineup over to save their lives).

I forgot about this one since he's already bounced around some, but Aaron Cunningham for Danny Richar. Cunningham's now on to the Padres and has played well in limited AB's this season.

What moves have come back to bite Kenny?
QUOTE (thedoctor @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 01:04 PM) the swisher deal is the one that bothers me the most probably. i really liked gio and carter. Carter was not in the Swisher deal, that was Gio and Fautino De Los Santos, and Ryan Sweeney. Carter was traded straight up for Quentin. Carter was then dealt to Oakland as part of the Dan Haren deal. Carter could absolutely rake in the big leagues and I'd still defend that deal, since it single handedly got us a playoff birth.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 12:48 PM) Especially with how much of an emphasis is put on the pass rush. Or even beyond that, the emphasis on stopping the run. Hell, Denver just lost the NFL's sack leader from last year for the full season and they've shown no interest. The Pats worked him out about 2 weeks ago but elected not to sign him and that's the last mention of him anywhere.

What moves have come back to bite Kenny?
QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 12:36 PM) In 2006, 2007, and 2009, CF was the least of our problems. Really? Maybe in 2007 because of how many other things imploded, but in 06 and 09, it was certainly up there.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 11:47 AM) What if he is crucial in the chase for the division title? What if he wins huge starts where we are facing elimination games in a postseason series? That's what I mean when I keep saying "Prove me wrong, Edwin".

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 11:36 AM) Interesting. Can I add the caveat that if he "wins" 2 games but they're both like 14-9 wins with Jackson finishing with an ERA around 7, I still get to complain? Anyway...to be more specific...right now, I'm focusing on what Jackson is throwing up there, how his stuff holds up, how he's actually pitching...because I think that if he faces a team with legitimate playoff quality hitters on it, instead of squeaking by when he gets into trouble, he's going to really suffer. But against a legit playoff quality team...if you go out and squeak by...I really can't complain, because if you can keep the Twins, Rangers, or Yankees from scoring a lot and you can go 7+ innings against them, even if you're pitching from the stretch every inning and you have guys on 3rd most of the game, you've done your job very well.

shack, if Jackson wins 2 postseason games for us this season...yes, then it's worth it. That guarantees us at least an ALCS run (he wouldn't be likely to get 2 wins in a 5 game series and have the team lose). I'd call that a fair return on Hudson.

What moves have come back to bite Kenny?
QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 11:25 AM) Not sure that I agree with this. This is the first year that Young has posted an OPS+ anywhere near 100, and we needed a starting pitcher a lot more than a CF back in 2006. In terms of coming back to bite us though...we spent a ton of money on Vazquez, CF was a killer hole for 3+ years (Dewayne Wise as leadoff) that we gave up other guys trying to fill...and now we spent a ton of money to get the CF slot filled. The Sox also had McCarthy at least available in 2006. You can argue either way, Vazquez was at least decent for the Sox in the 2008 season and he was also traded for a guy or two who could be seriously useful in the future...but you have to at least put that one on the list for the ramifications.
