An opinion piece I think I agree with.

White Sox Acquire Manny Ramirez
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Aug 13, 2010 -> 10:27 AM) I wonder if it would help if Manny came out and just said that he is only interested in playing for the White Sox, and any other team that tries to claim him is just wasting their time because he won't be happy playing for them? Probably not, but I would think twice about claiming a guy if he said that. I'd be afraid that I would get stuck with the contract of a malcontent. If Manny could block a waiver claim with his NTC (I still don't know what the rules are) then any other team that he didn't want to play for could claim him and block him that wya.

White Sox Trade Catch-All
QUOTE (spiderman @ Aug 13, 2010 -> 10:23 AM) I never thought I'd say it, but if they can't land a bat via the waiver wire, do they consider Jermaine Dye for the last month of the year? My guess is that they won't because he hasn't played this year, and was brutal in the 2nd half of last season. I bet they have considered it and asked. Remember, the 2 things JD didn't want to do was; take a salary cut and be stuck at DH. The Nats offered him a couple million and a RF spot a few months ago and he turned it down.

Teahen Up, Viciedo down
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2010 -> 01:14 AM) Can you learn such a thing? His patience noticeably improved in the minors the more time he spent there.

Teahen Up, Viciedo down
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 13, 2010 -> 08:05 AM) The book is out. High heat and he's gone. Hopefully he comes back in a couple weeks/next year with the 2nd edition out.

NBA Offseason Thread
QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 06:49 PM) And of course now I see you changed your reply to "recently" which is alittle more tolerable. I added the 2nd sentence to elaborate on player names but the word "Recently" was there the first time I wrote it.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 13, 2010 -> 08:38 AM) You also seem to think that all these new people will only get back what they pay in, and that is just wrong. With the ponzi scheme that it is, they never pay in enough to cover themselves, nobody does. But paying for enforcement continues to be free.

What moves have come back to bite Kenny?
QUOTE (GREEDY @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) Beckham might have been an over-exaggeration but how can someone say they would still make the deal today???? 50 million for at the most two years of Peavy post surgery???? And I am not certain that someone would give that 50mil for Gordon.... Let me put it this way...if I were the Tigers, and I had $60 million coming off the books this offseason, and I had the ability to get Peavy for basically assuming his contract...even though he struggled this year, I would very much lean towards doing so.

What moves have come back to bite Kenny?
QUOTE (GREEDY @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 06:05 PM) Let me put it this way so even the most baseball stupid can understand: There isn't a team in baseball that would take Peavy for a bag of balls, even if you packaged him with Gordon Beckham Wha? If I was any team that could remotely find a way to squeeze in that salary, I'd jump at that.

NBA Offseason Thread
QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 05:43 PM) You've had a bad few days of posting Balta. Who has CP3 had recently who's been a better player at that position? I assume you've got to be thinking of either Peja or David West, but I'm not sure which one I'd call a SF like Ariza, and Peja really wasn't effective there thanks to injury.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 05:47 PM) The argument all along hasn't been fixing quotas. It has been job programs, and enforcement, and verification. All of which we have done. Quotas have zero effect on people who are going to break the rules anyway. The job program is what I mean when I refer to the quota. If you have jobs that are going unfulfilled by the legal immigration quotas, you are going to guarantee yourself an illegal immigration problem. That's the pillar that went unfixed. You can do all the enforcement mechanisms you want, all the billion dollar fences, all the thousands of troops and drones on the border, all of the employer inspections, all the employer verifications...and no matter what you do, you won't be able to prevent a supply from appearing to fill a demand. Now that I write that...try the drug war metaphor. We've dumped hundreds of billions of dollars into trying to eradicate supply, to interdict supply, to do whatever we can to prevent it from getting here...but despite all of that, the war on drugs is an abject failure because there continues to be demand for the product.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 05:30 PM) So that one thing is going to solve everything? OK. On it's own no...but failing to fix it guarantees that anything else you try will fail. You've got an old, run down bridge, needs new paint, needs paving, but also needs a pillar that is in the process of collapsing replaced...no matter how good of a paint job or paving job you do, the thing's going to collapse if you don't fix that part.

8/12 White Sox vs Twins
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 05:27 PM) I'm seeing a bomb from him tonight. BY "bomb" do you mean "a terrible performance like we saw last night" i.e. such that I can say "man, AJ totally bombed at the plate today".

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 05:01 PM) Tell me if you have heard this all before... All of those same talking points are in there again 25 years later. Work programs, verification, enforcement, etc. You are right, we didn't create a long term fix, and it won't 25 years later. http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d0.../d099query.html But no actual fix to the immigration quotas.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 04:46 PM) Yes. And it has been a miserable failure. Just to be clear. Ok. I can still then argue that it's been a miserable failure because we didn't change the laws at the same time to create a long-term fix. All I was asking.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
So...I just want to be clear...your only example is the one under Reagan, correct?

The Democrat Thread
Judge Walker has ended his stay in the California Prop 8 appeal case, and at least until a higher court acts...gay marriage is now legal again in California. Edit: he has scheduled the lifting of his stay for August 18th, giving the 9th circuit time to step in if it so chooses.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 04:23 PM) How many others do you need? Well, I'm wondering if you can cite for me an example of amnesty happening at the same time as a major policy reform where the amnesty wound up being a major issue...such that if there were an amnesty tied up with the creation of a new job registration program the whole thing fell apart because of the amnesty. But frankly, any more than 1 would be interesting, because with 1 I can come up with all sorts of caveats..."yeah but there were only x number at the time...yeah but we were only doing x with regards to enforcement at the time, etc.".

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 04:16 PM) Its the opposite really. Giving away more citizenships make amnesty easier to grant. Was there an answer to my question about whether you had any example of a "failed amnesty" other than the one under Reagan?

8/12 White Sox vs Twins
Still no castro against the LHP...I'd rather have him at DH instead of Viciedo if AJ hadn't hurt himself last week.

What moves have come back to bite Kenny?
QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) Well, he just turned 24 and has as much power potential as Viciedo. Really, as much power potential as Viciedo? DV was on pace for about a 28-29 HR season as a 21 year old in AAA. Allen has good power numbers but I struggle to accept that.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 03:12 PM) You're just pulling numbers out of thin air now. No one, you or me, knows what % this will effect. And you completely ignore the broader point I was making - that you have to do ALL those different things, and the effect would go beyond the actual, direct enforcement. Also, remember recently, I posted an article showing that the level of illegals in the country had recently peaked, and was actually headed DOWN now? The main reasons for that are simple - lack of jobs, and the fear of increased enforcement measures. Less money, more risk, so they are headed out on their own. Your direct enforcement data won't show that. Wait a second...why do you get to conflate that both increased enforcement and lack of jobs are part of it? Increased enforcement could be doing absolutely nothing and if there are fewer jobs available due to the collapse of the construction industry. And you're suggesting "doing all those things"...can I assume this does not include "keeping the economy in the toilet for the next decade"? In response to your statement that I'm pulling numbers out of thin air...I think I can say the same thing about you. You're pulling out of thin air this notion that somehow there are cost effective things we're choosing not to do and that's why we're only getting 2%...but if we did those things in the way you want, suddenly they'd make a real difference. I think you're plain wrong, and I think that's as "out of the air" as any number I quoted, considering I can show the enforcement trends to back mine up. I'll give you the last word.

August White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) Not so great for a team in a pennant race. As I said 8 posts ago.
