The Cardinals made a roster move to cover for backup catcher Jason LaRue, who appears to have been injured and gotten a concussion thanks to Cueto.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 02:00 PM) how is this different than any other standard the government arbitrarily sets? Any other time you'd be angry about the government getting involved in people's lives.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:52 PM) Good for them. I think part of the discussion should be that the "born here" requirement, if any, would be that a temporary stay wouldn't suffice. And this is why I have a problem with any concept of this and why I think it's insane that any little-c conservative would support anything like this...because now the government is going to be deciding standards for how long you need to be here for it to count, or what you need to be doing, or maybe which country you need to come from to qualify. Any limit you try to set, I can come up with an easy example to get around it that will require you to give up and strengthen your rule.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
I want to highlight this bit of Rex's post...another thing you really, really don't want is to have immigrants scared to go to the hospital/doctor if they get sick, or hurt, or are having a child. It's the L.A. police story again...the L.A. police in the 90's had to declare publicly that they wouldn't check people's immigration status because they flat out couldn't enforce the city when the illegal immigrants there were too scared to report crimes. You have hospitals checking immigration status, you're going to wind up with a body count. Unless you think Coyotes are good at delivering babies.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:34 PM) Yep, because the only immigrants in this country are brown. You'll note...the proposal that 2k5 and NSS agreed to says that is entirely ok.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) Why pigeonhole this to mexicans only? Pretty sure the debate has been "immigrants," which could be any race. Which is why we're talking about how bad the birth tourism of people on legitimate visas is (which at least that Politifact post I brought in earlier suggests is much more common than the illegal immigrant coming here to give birth for citizenship).

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) fixt. What else has come out recently beside this? I haven't heard anything about support for a guest worker program. Everything has been about enforcement and punishment lately.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:18 PM) Further, if people are here illegally, they only pay in PART of the tax regime, if any. So again, they don't push up the other side with perfect efficiency. Therefore there is leakage and weakness economically. Then the solution is to bring them into the full system, not to turn our backs on them.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:16 PM) At the end of the day, having a way to control costs is step number one in saving programs like social security, medicare, and forced health care. Having no mechanism at all to control the amount of people going into the programs is going to bankrupt them. You guys kinda gave up the right to talk about cost controls in health care without me cracking up last year.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:15 PM) How are we getting closer to something we've always been? Supplant immigrant in this situation (or brown people, since a lot of you think this is all about hating on them only) with black, irish, german, catholic, jew, whatever. So, it's OK to distrust and beat up Mexicans because we used to do that to the Irish?

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:14 PM) No, the reason to explore this (at least for me - certainly SOME of these voices in the debate are racist) is simple. Citizenship is this country's single greatest commodity. And the more you flood the country with that commodity, the less value it has, NOT because it means "undesirable" people are here, but because there are limits to the OTHER resources we have. Jobs, government services, water/land/natural resources, money, etc. NSS, a lot of those things you list are entirely renewable resources...because they're paid for by the people who are already here. There's not just a finite supply of jobs or money or government services...they're paid for and created by the people who are here who choose to advance or cut back on them.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 01:12 PM) How about saving the future of our social services for people who actually have paid into them here and need them? So...the kid who is born here as a citizen, grown up here, lives here his or her whole life as a citizen...does not pay into those social service programs? OTOH, I know of a place that we're wasting something like $11 billion a year that might be able to cover more than the cost you're concerned about. Customs and Border Patrol.

THE CLUB - 2010
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:53 PM) I thought it was a little tasteless to show a 5 minute scene of Nancy Faust taking a bubble bath. There's a joke here involving the word "organ" that I'm not going to write to avoid having to suspend myself.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:53 PM) I just think its funny that this is one of those topics where being reasonable, or trying to come up with a positive change instead of going all out one way or the other, seems to be impossible. No one has justified yet in this thread that there needs to be change or that any change would actually be a net positive.

Is Freddy Dead (Armed?)
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) For real. Even the outs Minnesota hit were missiles. It was easy to see why if you were watching. Everything Garcia threw hung. Curve balls should not come in down the middle of the plate belt high.

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 11:33 AM) Surprised Cueto wasn't booted for what he was doing. Kicking people with spikes is bush league. I'm sure it just wasn't seen. There's a reason they look at video before handing out suspensions.

Daniel Hudson watch thread
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:08 PM) Wanna know why we traded for Jackson? Last nights game showed you. As much as Freddy has given us this year, he simply cannot be completely trusted. Then again, neither can Hudson at this point in his career, and I'm not even sure we were convinced he could be trusted in 2011. So we traded for a guy with great stuff that we thought Coop could work with and get good things out of, and through 2 starts, he has. Lets hope that continues. Why exactly do we think Jackson can be trusted? The only answer in your post is "great stuff".

Is Freddy Dead (Armed?)
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 12:36 PM) Freddy is what he is... when he's not getting the calls on the corners, he's in big time trouble. I know this might be due to listening to Hawk, but Freddy wasn't getting some of the calls Scott Baker was last night. That makes a big difference. Last night's outing had absolutely nothing to do with not getting calls on the corner.

The Official Run Into Outs Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 10:57 AM) 34 successful sac bunts out of 43 tries. So...our sacrifice bunt %age is 79%. I'm going to remember that the next time I'm told that Juan Pierre has only a 75% shot at successfully stealing that base and the bunt is a sure thing.
-
The Official Run Into Outs Thread
There are obvious complications to that as well...AJ getting caught stealing in a game may be a bad thing, but if the next guy coming up is hitting .160, then it might hurt more or less than CS at other times. I wonder how many sacrifice bunt outs we've given up
-
The Official Run Into Outs Thread
That number is useless without context. How does it compare to what other teams have given up?
