The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:56 PM) How many jobs did that 2 million create? What was the benefit to the economy? That was the point of the stimulus. First of all, it continued funding on a research program into ant biology. Now, just like "pig farts" may sound funny but can actually be a serious problem if you live near a hog processing plant, ants have enormous impacts on the environment and on man. They have the ability to destroy crops, they have the ability to harm people (fire ants), they can spread parasites, and there are uses for them in genetic research through understanding microbes that live in them and their short lifespan. A full taxonomic representation of ants would be incredibly useful publicly in the, frankly, likely event that a new species appears on our shore due to importation from Africa. I have a new ant in this prime agricultural area...do I spend $20 million in public funds to eradicate it, or do I let it be and think that it's not harmless? Finally...a big part of the goal of any actual "Stimulus" is to push fiscal policy hard once monetary policy hits the zero bound (i.e. the Fed drops rates to zero). We're already bordering on a prolonged deflation, which is the exact opposite of what you folks said would happen if the feds started printing money, and basically dropping dollars from a balloon and hoping they get spent is the single solution to that.

What do we have in Viciedo?
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:40 PM) Guerrero has walked 50 or more times in 10 seasons and 60 or more 5 times, and walked 42 times as a 23 year old. He didn't walk at all in his first call up in '96 in which he had 27 plate appearances. Vlad knew how to take a walk, and it's something Viciedo will have to learn how to do too. Some of those walks are simply people not wanting to pitch to him. Viciedo still has pitchers going after him. He's taken walks in the minors, took 23 last year in 500 PA's, and was getting better with that as the season went along (he took 3 walks in may and 9 in June, he then caught fire and walked less in July but put up a >1.000 OPS for the month).

The environment thread
The Deepwater Horizon is now, by the official count, the biggest marine oil spill ever and the 3rd biggest all-time, behind the Persian Gulf spill and the Lakeview gusher.

DH Game 1: Buehrle (9-8, 4.15 ERA) v Porcello (4-9, 5.50 ERA)
QUOTE (Allsox @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) I agree with everything except the platoon at DH, CQ is a guy you ride when he's on fire. Think you meant platoon Tank with Vizquel at 3B, right? Quentin's OPS against righties is .853, it's .756 against lefties this season.

DH Game 1: Buehrle (9-8, 4.15 ERA) v Porcello (4-9, 5.50 ERA)
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:23 PM) Dang, Alexei almost a .300 hitter..296 after that one.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:20 PM) Does that close the book on Mark's outing? Yes, 7.2 IP, 2 ER. ERA finishes at 4.05.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) So Buehrle finishes w/ 7 2/3 IP, 3 ER. Not bad. Sigh...

DH Game 1: Buehrle (9-8, 4.15 ERA) v Porcello (4-9, 5.50 ERA)
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:15 PM) So I guess we are stuck with Teahen and his putrid D at 3rd. *sigh* Brent Morel has rocketed upwards this year and, if his shoulder is OK, might be a legitimate mid-2011 arrival.

DH Game 1: Buehrle (9-8, 4.15 ERA) v Porcello (4-9, 5.50 ERA)
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:14 PM) I wonder if Teahen can play back up 1B. He's played there in 35 games in his MLB career. So, yes.

DH Game 1: Buehrle (9-8, 4.15 ERA) v Porcello (4-9, 5.50 ERA)
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:13 PM) Is there any way that Omar can actually help Dayan be a serviceable 3B? He seems to have been a positive influence for Alexei. Maybe we can sign him to be a player/coach next year and spend extra time working with the Tank. I think the reality is...there's only so much time in the day. Our goal was to get him ready with the bats, because that's his job. You put him in AAA for 3 years and tell him to focus on being a 3b, he'll probably be a decent 3b, with that cannon he has covering up for some of his mistakes. But...you don't exactly want to waste his bat for several years.

DH Game 1: Buehrle (9-8, 4.15 ERA) v Porcello (4-9, 5.50 ERA)
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:11 PM) I could do without Teahen or Kotsay. Rotate Dayan and Omar at 3B and add an extra bullpen arm. I think Teahen is actually a really good option for our needs...Vizquel for defense and lineup balance, Viciedo beats up LHP, Teahen hits RHP better than Viciedo, Teahen can be useful in corner OF as well as 3b/DH. It's really the perfect setup for a rotating DH...several old guys, several guys who fit a platoon well.

threets to dl
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:00 PM) If Threets is somehow able to stay on the DL until rosters expand in September (I know that's a long time and unlikely), he and Sale would both be eligible for the playoff roster correct? I believe you are correct.

Adam Dunn put on waivers...
QUOTE (RudyLawRules @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 02:53 PM) So let's say he gets claimed, the Nats will either pull him back or make a lesser deal than they could've made with KW. Does that make any sense? Does Rizoo actually think he'll get some lopsided trade or is he just kicking the tires? Stay tuned... He's kicking the tires. He had to put Dunn on Waivers to see if someone might get a bit desperate and give him the lopsided deal, and it makes sense to do so sooner rather than later when teams that might race in with a huge bid are out of the race.
