White Sox Acquire Manny Ramirez
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) A little more money? Manny is a pretty big investment for a team that has been playing terrible baseball for the last 2 weeks and has a ton of holes to fill. I wouldn't be shocked if there was some insurance policy on any of the guys that have hit the DL for them, especially Ordonez, that might cover a lot of the costs. Even without that...the Tigers have been acting like a team that isn't financially constrained, between their offseason salaries, constantly playing Ordonez, adding salary now...and they've got something above $50 million coming off the books next offseason.

White Sox Acquire Manny Ramirez
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:52 PM) the key is whether "Bad Manny" really only wants to play for the White Sox, then Det or Min risk having an unhappy Manny and his "injury" lingering for 7m It's worth noting...Manny would be an FA at the end of this season again...so if he wanted one more payday, those 1.5 months might do it.

White Sox Acquire Manny Ramirez
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:51 PM) And since that trade they've gone what, 1-4 or something? Making an improvement trade and spending money and talent to do so didn't make much sense then, so why not spend a little more money a few days later.

White Sox Acquire Manny Ramirez
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:49 PM) I'd be shocked. I wouldn't. They didn't trade for Peralta to cut salary.

White Sox Acquire Manny Ramirez
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:42 PM) And they apparently are not willing to do that, considering the Sox wanted the Dodgers to cover most of his remaining salary. If Manny clears waivers, and the Sox do inquire, the Dodgers will have to pick up some of the tab. Don't count out the NL. There are a number of teams that were either actively looking for a bat or that could benefit from one now. The Giants are at the top of that list.

FEASABLE waiver bats
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:41 PM) What NL team would want Manny? The Giants. Maybe the Phils with the body count they're wracking up. The Braves if they thought they could put someone's glove in CF out of the guys they have.

FEASABLE waiver bats
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:38 PM) Unless an NL team puts a fork into his plans. Or any of the other teams with a remote/legit shot at the playoffs (the Angels, the Twins, maybe the Tigers).

Waiver Wire Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:34 PM) All this s*** confuses me. Dunn was announced to be on waivers today. Did the Nats openly announce that or something? It's all done by leaks. Every GM in baseball should have access to the waiver wire reports, so you kinda know when most of the names are put out there because teams will leak them, but teams can also leak false reports. Last year, the reports were that Rios was claimed by an unnamed team and we spent about 24 hours guessing it could be the Sox before it leaked out of the Sox front office that yeah, they'd put in a claim on him. The entire process is supposed to be secret, but there's way too many people involved for it to stay that way.

Waiver Wire Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:31 PM) So is he on waivers yet? Until he's actually on your team, you never know anything official. They're forbidden to talk about it. With him on the DL and the Dodgers having just added players, they might wait a bit for him to come off and to see if they can make 1 last run at the West before trying to drop him.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:18 PM) cuz they're never wrong or misleading... But you know who isn't? John McCain. He's entirely trustworthy. Which is of course why he wants the 14th amendment overturned and the Dred Scott decision restored to it's rightful place. Out of his trustworthiness.

Waiver Wire Thread
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:25 PM) Just listened to the score and Bernstien said the White Sox are going to wait until Manny goes through NL waivers before they claim him. Said LA is sick of him and Manny only wants to play on the White Sox. So, if an NL team, say like the Giants, claimed Manny, would manny be able to use the NTC stuff he has to block a waiver claim?

Alexei Best All Around SS in baseball?
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:07 PM) And he wasn't bad there, contrary to popular belief. He wasn't awful, had good range, but was annoyingly careless.

The Republican Thread
Oh, and here's the WH rebuttal, saying that these guys are full of it and have a track record of being called out for being full of it on these reports.

Alexei Best All Around SS in baseball?
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 05:01 PM) you could say that, or you could say that it took a while for Alexei to get over his inexperience at the position If you believe some reports, last season was the first time he'd ever been put as a SS for any extended length of time, so it only took him about 1 season to turn into a GG SS. That aint' bad in my book.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 04:32 PM) The school and businesses in Africa got the majority of that money. It wasn't spent in the economic pool that would be beneficial. That's my point. So, the California Academy of Sciences doesn't count (whatever they are)? The companies they charter with don't count? The people who do the IT work/compiling don't count? Anyway, another thing worth noting...approval for this funding almost certainly went through a peer review process if it is, as I'd suspect, an NSF funded study.

August White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (asmithxc @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 04:46 PM) Their other reason is that Pierre's OBP at the top of the order is a "sinkhole." Over the last 30 days, Juan's OBP has been .367. If this is a power ranking, it should reflect the fact that Pierre is not killing us right now. It's been .357 since May 1 (not counting his awesome power and RBI surge today)

Waiver Wire Thread
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 04:23 PM) I was listening to the game on the Score and DJ mentioned the Dodgers sold MannyWood to a different comapny to advertise. Hopefuly that signals the end to ManRam in La and the start of Mannywood (on the bench since he would DH) on the Southside. The Dodgers just added $7 million to their payroll in trades, according to the number SI ran today. They probably need a sponsor to help cover that.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 04:16 PM) As to the last point, nothing was spent. That's the problem. I would have preferred they handed out 2 million to people with the requirement that they spend it. At least that would have done some economic good. Nothing was spent, so you mean they canceled the program? Then why is there any complaint?

Chris Sale Promoted to Majors
QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 04:18 PM) I wouldn't worry about it yet. If he's now going to be facing big league hitters...in terms of him being effective this year, yeah it's a worry. Long term development is different.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 04:17 PM) Baseballreference.com Go to "game logs". There you can highlight and compile stats for selected portions of any season. Click on May 1, and it should get highlighted in blue. Then click on yesterday's numbers, and it should select that block of dates.

Chris Sale Promoted to Majors
QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 04:09 PM) very good control. The 6 BB in 10 minor league innings are something of a concern there, but it's so early...

DH Gamethread 2: White Sox (60-45) vs Tigers (52-53) 6:05PM CDT
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 04:06 PM) I think with Torres out there you want the best defense possible. Or...you want to score as many runs as you can. I won't be too mad since it's a righty on the mound.
