  1. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Mar 19, 2010 -> 09:40 PM) They were actually, and the process was deemed constitutional in a court of law. Again, the specific lawsuit they were party to was actually more of a specific case than just testing a self-executing rule. That was a case where the actual text of the bill that the House and Senate passed was different when it was signed by the President.
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 20, 2010 -> 03:11 PM) Likewise. And what happened to the health care debate on C-SPAN? He kept telling us on the campaign trail how he'd make everything visible for us yet the White House went ahead and cut deals on the side with big pharma. We saw with the "Health care summit" what happens when you put things on CNN. Everyone's fanny tightens up so much you could make diamond out of coal
  3. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Mar 20, 2010 -> 03:34 AM) Not to mention 3/4 of that contract spent already, not saying wasted yet. Sorry correct myself, 4M is the signing bonus. I am down on him siwtching over to Boras. He hasn´t proven anything yet for him to switch to the Dark Side yet. One thing you've got to admit about Boras though...if He's representing Viciedo...that means that Boras thinks he'll be worth representing too.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2010 -> 06:15 PM) It would be nice if this meant that the Dems wouldn't b**** when this happens to them again... Normally out of sarcasm I'd ask you to please give me an example of the Dems b****ing about Republican usage of "Deem and Pass", but having just done a lexis search for both names for the process, I couldn't find a single article talking about it prior to this year. Strange.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 19, 2010 -> 06:10 PM) I'm already sick of hearing Hawk say how it's going to be a different team this year as we have a lot more speed. We really only upgraded our speed at DH, and even then, Kotsay isn't fast at all. The upgrade from Pods to Pierre is evened out by the downgrade from Getz to Teahen, with regards to speed. Rios in the OF and a healthy Quentin?
  6. Since it's come up, the House has a list available of previous legislation that has been passed by self-executing rules available if you go through its website. Here's a quick list of 20+ of those votes coming from the last GOP controlled congress, 2005-2006. Stolen fully from Matt Yglesias.
  7. Dontrelle Willis pitched 3 scoreless innings for the Tigers against the Astros yesterday. Thome also hit his first ST home run for the Twins.
  8. Carlos Lee, Magglio Ordonez, Jermaine Dye in the OF. I tell you what, they'll hit 110 home runs between them, and they'll be the worst defensive OF in history.
  9. This is about 15 years too late.
  10. These days, it's just silly to pretend that people can get by without a cell phone, or basic things like internet access and a computer. Even search for jobs requires them.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 19, 2010 -> 01:53 PM) What free insurance card is he referring to? Medicare? The Obamacare card, because Obama's taking over all health care and making every decision with his own computerized mind. He bought that computerized mind from the British NHS.
  12. Vin Scully hospitalized after a fall. Still plans to do the game sunday.
  13. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Mar 19, 2010 -> 11:42 AM) An "A" for sarcasm, an"F" for answering the question. Was there TWO bills invovled with the House's passage in 2005? I can give you a 2006 example where the Republicans passed 4 bills with 1 vote and 3 self-executing rules. Here's how it reads:
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2010 -> 10:36 AM) And yet this system was in place loooooooooooooooong before the Supreme Court opened the door for CORPORATIONS and unions to have more influence in elections. Has Congress ever passed a bill attempting to allow for more private money influencing campaigns, or has Congress at least superficially tried to cut back on the availability of campaign contributions?
  15. Ron Washington admits using amphetamines, pot while a player.
  16. One other serious point in reply...it's interesting to compare 2k5's statement that this is the system the politicians have set up to the reality of how this system was developed...for a great example, we can look at Justice Roberts's recent evisceration of corporate campaign finance restrictions in the Citizens United decision.
  17. Maybe if this nation had better broadband speeds, you would have been able to check beforehand.
  18. 2 examples of bats I'd be considering if I were the Cubs. First, why is Dan Uggla not a Cub yet? Second, if the Cubs offered up either Castro or Vitters plus a few lower level guys for Grady Sizemore...do you think the Indians would at least be intrigued?
  19. I posted something about Viacom yesterday?
  20. At least I can take solace in the fact that the head of the NY Federal Reserve in 2008 lost his job and is no longer working at the Fed, right?
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2010 -> 09:31 AM) That is just it. We can't find 535 people whose integrity is more important than money. If we could, none of that other stuff would matter. Incorrect. We could probably find them easily, but they'd lose their elections to better-funded candidates.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2010 -> 09:27 AM) Health is pretty important part of things. Guy like Aramis and Soriano would look a lot better if they were playing 162 annually. You can make some judgements in advance about how logical it is to give big contracts to certain guys though. Aramis Ramirez signed his last contract when he was 28, and last season was the first where he didn't give them 550 PA's. Soriano signed his deal when he was 31. And Soriano's was 2 years longer. If we're talking strictly about the Mets, ok, maybe you expect Delgado to go down because he's old, but Delgado, Beltran, and Reyes?
