QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) I assume he'll become a FA after that 4 years though, which would be big. Really? The Nats put the cuban-style out clause in there? Is that even allowed for players that are drafted?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 04:09 PM) "I think this is great for the NFL" ARe these legit quotes from you guys? -
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) Then you really didn't answer it at all. Do you mention in your posts, when citing left wing sites, that they are left wing sites, or do you only feel the need to point out sites that you feel are right wing? I am sure that the Cato Institute isn't called the Right Wing Cato Institute, you put that in there. Why? Because why would a conservative read something I was posting if I didn't point out "Hey, this is something you might like".

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 03:27 PM) Favre demanded his own locker room? Wow. That was one of the stories to come out of GB after he left; he didn't even have a locker with the rest of the team in his last couple years. That's one of the things that sold sold me on him being a guy you didn't want. -
QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 03:09 PM) Toronto were one of the big signing day losers for me failing to sign 1S pick Paxton, 2nd round pick Eliopoulos (two Canadians) as well as the aforementioned Barrett. It's not like they didn't just save bunch of money by trading Rios either. Must be a pretty weak month to be a Blue Jays fan. They get those picks again next year though right?

Did Frank ever demand his own private locker room? -
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 02:44 PM) AT&T and who else at that time? I listed I think 7 major companies that offer insurance and of course I got dismissed because it's not real competition. It's not competition when: you have zero choice over who you get because the individual market is virtually unreachable and 80% of the country's markets are considered "Highly concentrated" by the government's standards. Basically, here's your competition. Exxon and BP own 90% of the gas stations in your city. Your employer has a deal with one of the 2 companies to get gas at it half price, and gets a massive tax subsidy to do so. The other 10% of stations charge 2x as much as the standard price at those stations, and if you go to them, they're likely to turn you away anyway. The one you go to could start putting sugar in their gas tanks becuase they thought it was funny and you'd probably still go there. Slightly different situation because the whole dying-without-care isn't taken up by that analogy, but really, you pretty much go where your employer puts you.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 02:40 PM) There isn't? Wow. You can choose to work, or not. Or get health care, or not. Or get an individual plan instead of that nice IPhone, or not. Whatever. The choice is yours. Instead, let's all get cattle driven into one plan and encourage NO competition. Woot! If you guys are going to defend this system as "Competition!", then I wish I was around to see how you'd have reacted when the government broke up AT&T.

QUOTE (watchtower41 @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 02:19 PM) I've been trying to look for his numbers since moving to us? Of course I realize it has not even been an entire week yet... looking forward to seeing Rios play a full week in a humid U.S. Cellular 5/22, .568 OPS, 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 1 walk, 6 k's. Had one of those several balls he hammered left oakland his numbers would look a lot better. -
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 02:34 PM) First of all I meant potential. And I already said he wasn't hitting/might not pan out, hasn't been since he came in after being rushed from AA. I watched the kid for a long time. He has all the tools to succeed and put it together. It doesn't mean he will. Hell BA had the tools too, but just didn't put it together. We will probably have a hole at 3B next year depending on what the sox brass does/likes with Beckham. Why not fill that with someone who has incredible potential? (10X bigger than BAs actually) and who has actually proved more in the bigs putting up a .740+ OPS? I'd have no problem with the gamble...I just want to have someone say "He's struggling because he's doing this" if you're going to gamble that your team can fix him.

Favre Signing with Vikings today
Balta1701 replied to Steve9347's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Even Peter King thinks this isn't going to work, and he's been covering Favre's retirements for years. He was the guy who Favre told 3 weeks ago that he was staying retired. -
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) Kid has it all not to mention a glove. If he has it all, why is he hitting .198 since coming off the DL, why is his career OPS .741, why is his career batting average .248? I understand why people here would love to gamble on him, but really, the Royals are sending him down for a reason. He's not hitting right now at all, and his numbers so far in his career haven't been where they're supposed to be.

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 01:52 PM) Magglio, Magglio..wherefore art thou Magglio? Not playing because of the size of his...um..."Option".

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 01:54 PM) All newspapers will be history soon. No they won't. They're just going to have to be more intelligent. A lot of newspapers are doing ok, although revenues are down. The ones that are going bankrupt or shutting down are the ones that had owners who took out huge loans to expand or to do other things who are then having those loans come due in a time of more restricted credit and lower profits.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 01:18 PM) Are you really telling me that with the option of changing to something completely cheaper and less work for them, that most private corporations won't drop their private plans and force their employees into government plans? You really don't believe in profit motivation this much dispite the obvious economic history's shown all over the place? So your argument therefore is that a public plan would be cheaper for everyone and less work for everyone, and this is therefore a bad thing.

We continue to search for the bottom and never get there.

QUOTE (T R U @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 11:58 AM) I don't get whats with all the hate for Brett Favre.. If he wants to play, whats the big deal.. You're only upset he went to the Vikings I think we're all just sick of the retiring/unretiring game and how he seems to pander to the press the whole way through. (And mind you, sometimes you can accuse the press of over-doing it, of making up stories where there is none. In this case, the press and Favre have gone through all these retirements hand in hand together.)

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 12:40 PM) Hopefully Verlander, Jackson and Porcello get dead arms from Leyland's overuse. And we Jake Peavy them. -
QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 11:03 AM) I think Boras in this instance was a hinderance to Strasburg as Washington could just blame it on Boras setting a number that was not reasonable. Seriously...I'm actually somewhat surprised that all Strasburg got was a simple $15 million. With inflation it's not like he killed Prior's deal, and baseball's profits have risen a lot faster than inflation. I think that it's entirely possible that Boras's desire to totally upend the system for paying draftee contracts by hinting at $25-50 million may well have cost Stras a couple million.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 12:28 PM) Rodgers has handled all this as best you could. I expect him to have a great year. If he stays healthy and has a running game behind him. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 11:36 AM) The Trib was already struggling and already looking down the barrel of some tough times. But boy, having Zell come in, leverage a buyout with huge debt, run the company through bankruptcy, manage it like a man who knows nothing about the business... and now he's just going to walk away? I hope, for his safety, after he leaves the company he ran into the ground, that he doesn't run into too many current or former Trib employees. I'm sure he still made his money on the deal.
