Jon Garland has cleared waivers according to FoxSports
Balta1701 replied to DaveBrown85's topic in The Diamond Club
Man, 1.44 WHIP, 11 losses in the NL, and it's not like the NL West is loaded with offense. I wonder if he could be gotten on the real-cheap (like $2 mil or so) this offseason as a bridge to Hudson, with him being interested as a method of trying to get his career back on track. -

Memphis officially stripped of its 2007-2008 NCAA Basketball season due to stuff that certainly seems to involve DRose. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 04:00 PM) Losing is one thing but letting your closer melt down is another. Maybe you shouldn't be surprised when that closer is Aardsma.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 02:50 PM) Yep, these guys have nice integrity trying to get back whatever they didn't have in Washington circles, saying s*** years later that what they did was politically motivated. It takes balls to do that. . Tom Ridge and Colin Powell can go suck on their words that don't mean s*** for a while. This of course begs the question...if you had a problem with that behavior, why didn't you resign? Or why didn't you make it publicly known?

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 02:53 PM) Second, let's tax the s*** out cigarettes, and make tobacco the villian and watch it STILL not make a difference on how they use the tax money from it. Hypocritical. (I'm sure there's some f***ed up "progressive" data out there that will get posted next. Who cares.) Huh? -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 02:53 PM) I hate David Aardsma. Just because he can only pitch against us?

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 02:39 PM) Well we should tip our cap to Detroit then and the division. I have no problem though winning 2/3 all the time, but the many times we got swept this season isn't good. Yeah, that's the real issue. Taking 2/3 from most teams is fine as long as you don't go in to Detroit or Minny and lose 3 in a row or 4 of 5.

QUOTE (Tex @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 09:22 AM) Well well, I guess we should slow dfown for slow Jim Xanthan Gum might be the right additive to make that happen.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 08:33 AM) Frankly, I'd like to find a way to keep both of these guys on the 25-man roster next season. Their skill sets are complimentary. No reason why we can't other than playing time.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 07:36 AM) Plaxico Burress will spend a minimum of 20 months in prison after accepting a plea deal for a 2-year sentence. He accidentally shoots HIMSELF in the leg, and gets 20 months minimum. Meanwhile, Stallworth kills a man and gets 1/20th the sentence. Way to go, New York. Not NY's fault here. The guy stuck a loaded gun in to his sweatpants, with no legal right to carry the gun where he went. That's a fairly fair sentence, all things considered. You or I doing that would probably still net more, but the guy's doing serious time. Florida is where Stallworth did his deed.

Really, we only got through the alphabet once while I was sleeping? I'm disappointed.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 07:16 AM) It's still cuts into that personal freedom of choice though. I hate smoking, and agree with the laws keeping it out of public places, but what makes tobacco different from alcohol? I agree it does lead to an increase in chances of health problems down the road for each individual, I just have a hard time with the whole regulation of individuals right to make choices concerning themselves. I could drag this down the drug-legalization route but I think there's a better way to look at it. The government does all sorts of things to encourage or discourage behaviors using the tax law. We may disagree with some of them from each side, but the concept has been well established going all the way down to the local level. We want certain types of businesses to survive, so we subsidize their product or we give them a tax break. We want people to buy houses, so we give homeowners a gigantic tax break in the mortgage interest deductions. We want people to stop smoking, so we've started taxing the Hell out of cigarettes. We want people to invest in retirement so we give huge tax advantages for people putting money in the stock market. We want people to have health insurance so we give a gigantic tax credit for businesses that provide it. There's no reason why we can't use this already-existing framework. Sure a "Pop tax" may sound funny, but on paper, it's a sound policy. You want people consuming less high calorie, low nutritional value foods? make them more expensive. You want people drinking less? Tax it more. People still keep the choice, but the government makes it more advantageous for you to choose not to engage in that behavoir. -
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 06:50 AM) i dont know... i've seen the Black guy with the gun all over TV. I also remember hearing that there were 2 people in the crowd with those semi-automatic guns. Both are true, as far as I can tell. There were something like a dozen armed men at that rally, at least 2 with AR-15 type rifles.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 07:43 PM) So he is doing just what he did in Tampa then.... Maybe he'll wind up in the booth for Fox during the playoffs this year. Last time he did that was 2005 right?

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 07:17 PM) regulation is one thing, even though i think regulation of alcohol and drugs is a no brainer.. but maybe creating a healthy person or exercise credit? reward the good behavior? make buying gym memberships, running shoes, bikes, etc tax deductible? cap the max deduction at $250 per person (similar to the teacher buying classroom supplies tax credit) so any abuse would have a minimal tax effect How about we do things in the opposite way. Stop giving giant subsidies to corn farmers, increase the subsidies for fruits and vegetables, put a price on carbon so that high energy processed foods cost more. -

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 06:35 PM) Count was good today, but we're likely giving Freddy only one more try, so his next start might still be an audition for the bigs. There's that other guy in Charlotte's rotation who's a little more likely to take that SP opening.

Are we really one of the 4-5 best teams in MLB?
Balta1701 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
With Jake Peavy as a starting pitcher and our new 4 man outfield, we are on paper. But we've been saying how good we are on paper for so many years in the last decade the paper is looking like a 1970's newspaper. -
Feeling like the answer is no.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 03:15 PM) I've been banging the drum for slotting for a long time. I have no idea why the union would oppose. Its more money for established players. If you draft a HS kid, he should be your property through his college days. Trading draft picks should be allowed. A world wide draft makes some sense but I think that will wait. It has to happen. Too much money is being given to guys who will be busts, and believe me, the majority of the guys that got over $1 million will not be productive major league players ever. Here's the thinking for all these unions; there's no guarantee that if you put a cap on money for draftees, the owners will take those moneys and reinvest them in veterans. It's just as likely that the owners will institute a cap and will therefore put somewhat less money in to the players overall.
