  1. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) I'm talking about when Jimmy screwed over our greatest Ally in the middle-east and muslim world the Shah because they "violated human rights." Funny thing is because of that, Ayatolla Khoemeini got in power, and executed pro-western iranians, put women back in servitude, etc. Good work there Jimmy! Not to mention he is an anti-semitic... But he now supports women's rights!!! Except if they so happen to be living in a muslim country. So the Shah's downfall was that the U.S. didn't stand behind him enough, not the fact that he was an incredibly corrupt dictator who's country was falling apart underneath him?
  2. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 08:43 AM) Griese was released by TB. He knows the Bears' system and would be a better backup than Hanie. Without knowing how Hanie has progressed (Seriously, the backup QB slot is something you can only guess at a lot of times, the team has to evaluate them based on practices and preseason games), signing Griese wouldn't be a bad move at all. Although the Bears may not have the roster spot open for another QB.
  3. QUOTE (dbaho @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 08:37 PM) My guess on the Gortat re-signing is they're gonna deal him come Dec 15. Because Gortat isn't going to be a happy camper if he's only going to get 10mins a night behind Dwight for the next 5 years. I actually think Otis Smith may have something worked out with Houston already, but we'll wait and see on that. If they don't have the deal already nearly done, then matching that is a crazy move, given what we know about how far downwards the salary cap and luxury tax are poised to march next season. Nobody is going to be wanting to trade for that contract in the middle of 2009.
  4. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 08:51 AM) She has every right to quit for any reason she wants. But that doesn't mean that I can't question the reasons why and to challenge her on it if given the chance. That also doesn't mean you can't judge her if her actions after quitting stand in stark contrast to the reasons given for her quitting.
  5. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 08:29 AM) The hostages say hello. Our total lack of an energy policy says hello also.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 07:23 PM) you missed necrophiliac "Architect of the Hubert H. Humphey Metrodome"
  7. Best sign of the night: "Finally Albert gets some pitches to hit"
  8. Man, every one of Pujols's home runs is barely clearing the fence. I would like to thank MLB for putting this online. And that was not a home run by Pujols. That was caught by the fan on the reachover.
  9. QUOTE (T R U @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 03:44 PM) ESPN just said Gortat is staying with the Magic, dunno how that happened. It appears he's an RFA and Orlando is choosing to match the 5/$34 offer he received from dallas. Orlando's really shelling out the cash this offseason.
  10. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 03:10 PM) So, are you saying if we bring Teahan in, load him up on PED's, we got ourselves a late 90's/early 00's Jason Giambi on our hands? Interesting. I seriously wonder if Giambi didn't wind up casually hurting the A's scouting efforts. IIRC there's actually a blurb in Moneyball about drafting someone because he had a body type like Giambi and his power might develop the same way.
  11. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 03:12 PM) Oh sorry, I wasn't referring to that Balta, I meant in the Sox's preferred method of playing ball, Getz's value lies in the way he focuses and does not make as many mistakes as Ramirez. I think his value to the team that way is way undervalued. That's my point as well. You get a guy like Getz, if he hits like he's hitting in July (.807 OPS over his last 4 weeks) you've got a solid guy who should be starting on your team and will help you win games, but also a guy that no one is giving up a top prospect to trade for.
  12. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 03:09 PM) An "upcoming" book deal and speaking fees she didn't have the freedom to do, while having $500K in legal fee debt. Not much income coming in as governor. As I said, she probably had to resign for financial reasons, among others. A web based fundraising campaign aimed at her legal debts raised over $100k without much press a couple weeks ago.
  13. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 03:06 PM) Let's say Getz winds up even hitting .300 and has an OBP of around.350-360. That is kind above average I would think. Even then, people aren't going to offer you a front-line starter or 30+ home run guy for a player like that.
  14. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 01:56 PM) I remember when he was drafted the A's thought he'd be the next Jason Giambi. He was a guy whose power was supposed to come along with more development. It's never really happened, but he has turned into a very valuable guy. There turned out to be a big flaw in projecting future power development based on how Jason Giambi's power developed.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) what if we offered a package of Broadway + a couple of other prospects for Halladay, would the blue jays bite? I'm going to hope this is sarcasm, and you realize that Broadway was already traded for Castro. And that his ERA actually went up slightly from the 5.62 he put up in Charlotte when he went to the Mets.
  16. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 02:55 PM) Getz is either super-utility or trade bait. I wouldn't mind either. The problem with Getz as trade bait is that guys like Getz aren't worth as much in trades as they typically are to the team holding them and getting solid average performances out of them.
  17. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 01:57 PM) on Mike & Mike this morning, Ken Rosenthal said the Pedro signing will not effect their position on Halladay In other words, "No, we're still not trading Drabek for him"
  18. We'll see where it goes. Sidetracks aren't a bad thing sometimes.
  19. QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 12:01 PM) I don't mean to twist the thread but most of what is going on with Halladay has been discussed immensely over the last 25 pages and until an update with us occurs - no point in really repeating everything over and over again. I did want to pose this question though in here instead of creating a whole thread. http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/articles/20...071209.txt#info Suggests in the article dealing Adrian Gonzalez. Would you rather have he or Halladay? And do you think the Peavy package would be enough/too much/too little? Personally - with Thome's contract up and Dye having an option. I'd almost see what kind of help we can get for our rotation by dealing a guy like Thome. Not much I'd imagine but perhaps move for him and play Kong or Gonzo at DH? I know we don't need offense but with those bats coming off the lineup possibly, Gonzalez is insanely affordable the next two seasons, and the uncertainty surrounding Quentin's ability to repeat any resemblence of 08'. I'd almost make a move for him and look other avenues for SP and RP. Including potentially dealing Dye next season if we exercise his contract. Or try to push Thome to Seattle with a bullpen arm for Washburn. I know they have the Griffey thing goin on but itll help them. Just a little topic to change the discussion a little. Various points in reply. 1. I'd love Adrian Gonzalez. We have a clear hole in our corner OF spots right now, especially if either JD or Thome or both are gone next season. That's a hole we need to fill. Filling it mid-season, however, requires that either Quentin is hurt, Quentin or Dye move to CF, or someone goes to the bench. It's not the most practical solution, if we're assuming that TCQ is actually coming back. I'd be all over that this offseason when both Dye and Thome are filing for FA's. 2. Would I give up the Peavy deal for Gonzalez? It depends on who the PTBNL's were. I wouldn't want to part with Hudson, Viciedo, Danks, or Flowers as one of those PTBNL's. I'd do Richard + Poreda for him this offseason more than likely unless one of those 2 comes out and pitches like Johan the rest of the year. 3. Seattle isn't a logical landing point for Thome, as you note they have Griffey. Furthermore, it looks like they're considering standing pat with Bedard and Washburn because they're suddenly actually in the race and both Bedard and Washburn are pitching well. Seattle does need offense, but adding Thome to Griffey isn't going to help that offense and it's only going to subtract from their pitching. If they're trading Washburn its because we offered them something legit that would help their offense right now or something legit in terms of prospects. 4. JD's option is just not getting picked up. It's still possible he'll be re-signed, but his option will not be picked up. No one will offer him $10 million this offseason, let alone the $13 million his option is for.
  20. Clay Buchholz will get a callup and his first big league start of the year this friday.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 09:48 AM) I'm just confused as to how quitting her job as Governor benefits her family if she continues to be in the spotlight by planning to speak at events, perform interviews, write books, etc. How is all of that going to give her family less attention? It doesn't. That's my point. If she's doing this for her family, then as of say, August, she ought to be disappearing. No more Katie Couric rides on her husband's snowmobiles, no more appearances at big Republican events in the lower 48, no random appearances at local fish-fries in Iowa, no more "Sarah Palin calls Barack Obama a Commie-Nazi" reports on the evening news. If that happens, then I'll buy that her family just needed privacy and that's why she departed.
  22. QUOTE (dbaho @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 08:54 AM) More updates; When's the deadline for Utah to match the Milsap offer sheet?
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 09:44 AM) Exactly. I'd have all the respect for her decision to protect her family, if, she was actually protecting her family. She is quite clearly not. I'll even accept that she's spending some time clearing the air and fighting through a few grudges for the next month or two. More than happy to give her that. But I'll believe it when I see it.
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 09:39 AM) I agree 100% with the first line - the treatment people in her position get would be very hard on a family. But I couldn't disagree more with your second line. Her behavior has made it abundantly clear she didn't do this for her family, as has been described previously. She loves the show, she created the circus act and begs the media to follow her on her family vacations. She wants what she is getting - lots of attention. So far she's spent the time since her "Resignation" giving press interviews and using things like Facebook messages to bash the press and the have a verbal duel with her daughter's baby-daddy. I'd be more than happy to believe that she actually did this for her family...she just has to start acting like it. If she does, I'll be content to never think of her again.
