  1. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 09:33 AM) Why do people want Ian Snell? He has a 5.36 ERA. Because Coop will fix him.
  2. QUOTE (Cubano @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 06:11 AM) He needs to be brought up in September to taste the big leagues. KW should say to him after that call up: Kid if you like to be in the big leagues you need to produce and work hard. He needs to be sent to AFL this year. The only question I had about Viciedo is this rumor of not working hard from Cuba and now the USA. It is troubling to me. Going to the AFL this year should be a definite. AFL and Winter ball somewhere in Mexico wouldn't be bad to me either. I don't want him called up to the big leagues until he earns it though. He puts up a 1.000 OPS in August and we'll talk about a callup. Until then, he has to earn it. He'd probably k 1/2 of his big league at bats if he was called up now.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 06:45 AM) Crain's is reporting that the Cubs may file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection, in order to speed the sale of the team and shelter themselves from TribCo liabilities. Seems to me like an abuse of Chapter 11, as they intentionally kept the Cubs out of the TribCo filing, and the Cubs do not have material reason for bankruptcy in their own books. But whatever. Aside from the Phoenix Coyotes has any other major sports franchise ever filed for bankruptcy?
  4. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 09:27 AM) And for the record, this IS a treaty and must be eventually ratified by the Senate. Are you actually certain of that or are you just guessing? It'd be an interesting constitutional test actually to see what would happen if the President ordered the dismantling of a large number of nuclear weapons and then Congress used its budgetary authority to prevent that from happening.
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 09:16 AM) Is it me or is it always Miami and Chicago jockeying for picks and players? I swear, it seems Pat Riley is always in a position where he is one draft pick away(rose/beasley, hinrich/wade) or is trying to get the same free agents or players the Bulls are after Problem is...Riley's well ahead of us, thanks to the way the balls bounced in 2003.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 07:13 PM) Are you aware that Toronto is apparently asking for Clay Bucholz for Scott Rolen? If that's true, then there's no serious mandate for them to cut salary and it's time to just start closing threads.
  7. I saw someone namede "Fuld" playing CF and leading off for the Cubs and immediately thought "I wonder if that's the guy who destroyed Lehman Brothers"
  8. Wendell Potter, a former executive for Cigna, sits down with Bill Moyers for his first real public media interview about why he's started speaking out against his former employer and in favor of health care reform.
  9. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 04:38 PM) Cook and Lillibridge homer. TCG goes 1-4 with a 2-run double. Marquez gets the win with a respectable outing. I'd still want him doing pushups after that flyball.
  10. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 04:40 PM) I like our team and its future. However I dont think we can win a division this year with players in key positions going thru on the job training. I am referring to the left side of the IF. In this division, I think we can win it with some number of people in on the job training (Name a team in the central that doesn't have a good amount of that?). I'm just not convinced yet that we want to. Not only that we don't want to play like we want to win the central, but I'm not convinced we won't be better long-term by focusing on filling longer-term holes than by going all out for this season.
  11. Tell us something of the story of how you wound up signed with the organization.
  12. I hate winner threads that hang around after a loss like today's. It's like salt in the wound.
  13. QUOTE (tommy @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 02:31 PM) We got Halladay and with Q back we win this division. /bold prediciton. Not if we have to give up Floyd and Beckham to get him.
  14. QUOTE (Cali @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 02:16 PM) I'm just gonna copy this from another thread.... I've said it before, but the AL Central sucks, and the Sox will never be more than 5 games out all season long. Because of that Kenny's not gonna go into sell mode, but since we're apparently poor, he's not gonna go into buy mode either. CQ is gonna be our big "trade" and KW will stand pat citing how close we are (have been) to 1st all season... If Kenny was offered something for one of his big leaguers that he considered to be a very good deal (i.e. like the Diamondbacks offered Brandon Allen for that Pena guy in our bullpen or something like that) then I'd hope he wouldn't outright reject it because of us being in the race.
  15. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 02:03 PM) I think it would be ok. Between Dotel, Thornton, Pena, Linebrink, Carrasco....I think that still matches up fairly well against most clubs....IF you could get Thornton to become a solid closer... If Cooper can turn Pena in to a solid 7th/8th inning guy, then you could deal without both Jenks and Dotel...especially if you can pull DJ back together. If Pena and Carrasco continue to struggle though, then that bullpen is decidedly average.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 02:00 PM) Yeah, the bullpen without Jenks could be scary unless Linebrink avoids his usual 2nd half meltdown. His career ERA in August and September is about 3.30. The only month that stands out as being typically bad for him is July.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) A bullpen minus Jenks isn't as impressive. Depends on whether we're thinking we can win it all this season or whether we're playing to be as good as we can each of the next few seasons.
  18. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 12:11 PM) Kucinich was really being a cock. Granted, he was 100% correct on his actual points, but I didn't think it was particularly necessary to act like he did. That's my point. You want to overwhelm a guy with facts, fine, but what you shouldn't do is put him in a position where he can lean back, look cocky, and at the same time have people still come out on his side.
  19. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 10:27 AM) I saw that this morning on the highlights, and man did that look nasty. They showed his wrist right after the injury and it was already extremely swollen up. Wasn't as bad as the one by Matsui a couple years ago, but man I hate watching those where the person's wrist gets pinned. Ouch. I'm wincing just thinking about it.
  20. QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) I am not cause that will just drive your baseball mind crazy. Whats done is done and trades are a roll of the dice most of the time. But you can always check the weight of the dice first too see if they're obviously rigged against you.
  21. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 01:35 PM) seriously though, 8 runs in the dome can easily be made up in the last two innings. Especially now that we've taken Thome out
  22. QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 01:34 PM) I actually think Pena is a good arm to have in the bullpen. With some work he can be an asset. Still going to keep weighing him against Brandon Allen.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) Wow Beckham...I defend him more than anyone, but it might be time to try Getz/Nix at 3rd and put him at 2nd. You know as well as I do that Getz doesn't belong at 3rd
