QUOTE (3E8 @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 08:38 PM) There have been numerous ROY winners with batting averages below .300, in fact it is the norm. Beckham does not need to hit well over .300 to be "in the discussion" I would agree with that if Beckham had played the whole season. He's only playing at best 60% of the season. Which means he won't be eligible for things like the batting title, etc. And which means to me that his numbers over that part of the season need to be absolutely staggering for him to earn that award.

I have an urge to create a Carlos Quentin AAP page.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 03:53 PM) Where did you see this? There have been more than a few reports saying that the Braves may consider moving Escobar in exchange for a big bat. I haven't seen the White Sox directly linked anywhere, but what is Kenny not involved in? There's also been a lot of talk about the rift between the Braves and the constantly struggling Francoeur. They'd probably have moved him already if they felt like they would get anything in return.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) Huh? What is "well over" .300? Well over...noticeably over, .320 or better, something high enough to catch the voter's eyes.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 02:57 PM) Haren is going to be next to impossible to get because of his favorable contract. As far as Halliday goes, I think with a healthy Quentin and a top 3-4 of Halladay, Buehrle, Danks, and Floyd they could absolutely give the Yankees a run for their money in the playoffs. If you don't think they could, might as well be sellers because outside of Halladay (and Haran) their isn't a player that puts the Sox on the Yankees level come postseason. You could also deal Halliday after the season to recoup some of the young talent you traded to get him. You do realize the Yankees aren't even in first place right now? They're in the wild card slot right now.

The Governor's attorney is now threatening any media organization that even dares to report on the idea that she might have an ethics problem. What better way to get people interested in investigation whether or not there's any legitimate corruption up there than to start threatening the media with lawsuits?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 02:56 PM) Tyler Wigginton, Aybar, Kouzmanoff...someone along those lines? Atkins? Melvin Mora? Do any of those names strike you as a big enough upgrade to justify giving up anything of value? Or hell, even giving them playing time?

Why is Clayton Richard in our starting rotation?
Balta1701 replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 01:42 PM) Yeah, he definitely doesn't have the potential that Danks does. A big issue with Richard is that his arm slot is going to make it extremely difficult for him to consistently get righties out. I would bet you we heard the exact same stuff about Danks in 2007. -
If we want Beckham in this discussion then by the end of the season we need to be talking about an average well over .300 and 15+ home runs for him. Talk to me when he's close to that.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) Jermaine just destroyed that ball! He has a shot at a 40 HR season if he doesn't hit the skids this year.

Official 2009-2010 NBA Thread

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 01:30 PM) I'd love Bosh. Is he worth the max deal? Probably not. But in 2010, a handful of guys are going to get that. Quite frankly, yeah, I think Chris Bosh is as worthy or a max deal as anyone on the 2010 FA list. -
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) If he was looking so good then he wouldn't be traded . I'm really sure that other GM's especially in the NL know he can develop into a quality starter and he's lefty so very appealing. These are normal struggles for a young lefty. See: Danks's 2007 numbers that I posted in another thread. The kid's got talent, he's still working through that "Trying to make the pefect pitch every time he throws something" phase right now, and he doesn't yet really seem to know how to set up and dismantle hitters like our other guys have learned to do. This is why young pitching takes time to develop. In 2 years, if he's coming out and lighting teams up, we'll be greatful we gave him the chance.

Why is Clayton Richard in our starting rotation?
Balta1701 replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) I agree. Overall, Richard's overall numbers for the year aren't terrible for a #5 in the AL. I'd much rather watch Richard suck during a developmental phase than watch Colon suck at the tail end of his career. As for Poreda, I'm not convinced that he has a future outside of the 'pen. I'd like to see him get some long relief opportunities, but overall I don't have a problem with the handling of our pitchers right now. We've got a legit shot to develop both of these guys in to at least middle-of-the-rotation starters, but they seemingly need different things. Poreda needs some control work and to get his offspeed stuff down, Richard needs to get past those early struggles where you're a little too scared to go after people that we seem to run in to with every pitcher. Richard could probably benefit from working on another pitch in the offseason, but either way, I'd expect either of them to average 4-5 innings a game and give up a decent number of runs if they're being put out there as starters, because that's just what happens with 90% of young pitchers. Right now it seems that they think Richard is better facing a lot more batters, and Poreda is better off just being up, working out of the pen, and perhaps working on pitches on his throwing days. They may well decide to flip them here in a week or two, no idea. But in terms of developing young pitching, the one thing you don't do is give up on it completely because it has a rough month. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 12:56 PM) Simply put, you can't keep throwing someone out there who struggles to get you past the 5th inning. It depends on what your goal is. If it's the 5th starter spot, you've got 4 other guys rolling, and you're looking to develop a young pitcher for the future, then you can certainly keep throwing someone out there who struggles to get through the 5th and has bad numbers. Give you a perfect example. Full season WHIP: 1.540. Got worse every month; 2nd half 1.642 WHIP, 7.11 ERA, 1-7 record. Who am I looking at? That's John Danks, 2007. Face it, Clayton has some talent, he just needs work. He's not getting that sitting on the bench. You want to develop a young starter in to something solid, you have to put up with some struggles. Would I have a problem moving Poreda in for some starts? No. Would I expect him to go more than 4 innings? No. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 01:09 PM) With each crappy performance by Richard he looks less appealing as part of a package deal. Am I the only one who paid any attention at all to how we went about developing Danks and Floyd in 2007?

Man, Danks was out forever, I hope it's nothing that lingers.

QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 07:34 AM) They are overlooking something as far as safety. I am sure of it. You trust engineers to build giant, 110 story tall buildings but not to figure out how to put a small glass room on them.

QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 09:01 AM) I was driving to Orland mall yesterday and I seen a huge ass field on LaGrange rd that had people flying those remote controlled airplanes and helicopters....I wanna get one of those...that is flying a kite x 100. But a kite is cool too. There used to be a field off by Chesterton that was used for those. Occasionally I'd be biking by there and stop just to watch. Frighteningly cool, I thought they were.

QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 11:35 AM) If the incumbent is relatively popular after 4 years does this historically scare off the top contenders from the other party? Or not really? There's not a huge number of cases to give you a great sample size, but it varies from time to time, and sometimes you can't tell how strong a field is until the end (Bill Clinton wasn't considered that strong in 1992, for example, until the end)

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 01:41 PM) It makes sense for a team that is this close to winning a division, if they really want to have the pitching staff to compete in the playoffs. Halladay, Buehrle, Contreras, Danks/Floyd is near untouchable as far as a playoff staff compared to the rest of the teams in the races. IF they're all healthy.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) Toronto would be a great team to target right now. They are rumored to be looking to cut payroll, and their attendance is about 7000 people PER GAME lower. They have to be in a world of hurt right now. I'd be willling to bet if JR was willing to approve the addition of Peavy, he would approve Halladay. You just have to remember that Halladay is 32 and is only signed for 1.5 more years. You can't offer the same quality of deal that you offered for Peavy given the contract and age differences.

7/4 Game Thread Sox @ Kansas City 12:10pm CSN

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 10:55 AM) That's not a bad idea...who would you put out in the outfield? Sign Dye for 2 more years. Put Konerko at DH next year, give JD 1 more year in RF, play Allen at 1b. 2 years from now, hope that we have a more firm replacement lined up for JD or spend some money on it (Danks2 should be ready by then).
