QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) If the White Sox were to acquire Penny, imagine the expectations that would be set? LOL. Cooper will have him looking like Loaiza Version 2003 in no time (while simultaneously adding to Poreda's arsenal and nurturing Danks/Floyd/Richard). Everyone would be saying the White Sox POTENTIALLY have the best rotation in the game of baseball... Hell, if I were Penny...I might well be looking at a team like the White Sox...a team with a record of helping turn guys around or building guys up, maybe for a short 1-2 year deal to take another shot at FA after a "Contract season" type performance. Like the Sox, or Cardinals, or perhaps the Braves or Padres. Someone like that.

He'll make more than that on the open market I think.

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:08 PM) You don't think that his amazing voter ID file won't find its way to the GA Dems? Having the voter ID's and being able to draw them out at a 64% clip nationwide are 2 different things. -

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) How much do you guys think is to much to give up. Say one of the trio of Towers, Depodesta, and Alderson called the Sox up, and said you could get Greene and Morton for Anderson, Broadway, Allen and Shelby would you do it? Just looking at his stats. Colt Morton hasn't played a full season in 2 years, since A Ball, and looks like about a .250 hitter in the minors. That's way, way more than I'd be willing to give up for the combo of those 2, esp. given that Greene is more expensive than the guys we already have. -
For a fascinating trend...here's an NYT map breakdown by county of which areas of the country Senator McCain outperformed President Bush's 2004 numbers. Make your own assumptions about what drove this effect.

If we're talking about bipartisan type picks...Fitz for AG. You even get the Illinois connection, and hopefully you can shut down the concept of "Politicizing the DOJ" in the way that our current disaster has chosen to do.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:21 PM) Hey Duke, Rahm Emanuel's last name only has one m. Not trying to be a smartass, I'm sure it was just a typo, but yeah. And isn't Emanuel jewish? Could this pick in small part, especially with as quick as it was made, be something that attempts to ease the fear of how Obama will be towards Isreal and people of Jewish background? Jews still voted like 75-25 in favor of Obama IIRC without looking again.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) Coleman up by 475 right now. It's going to stay that way for a while until the recount happens in a couple weeks and the courts get a chance to hash everything out. You know, presumably there are also going to be a decent number of "Provisional ballots" cast in that election, ballots cast by first time voters or voters who's names don't appear/don't match the voter rolls exactly. Those will take days to weeks to check as well, and I'll bet they go overwhelmingly for the Dem because they'd be a lot of new registrations. -
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:44 PM) Some of that info makes me think even more than I already was that McCain wasn't running his campaign at all. The campaign and the person just didn't match. He was giving his speeches on his own, he presumably picked his own VP, etc. Just because a consultant tells you something will work doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. I mean, if a classic consultant got its hands on Senator Obama's campaign, how different would it have been? "A large rally in Berlin? Are you nuts? And that middle name, can we do something about that?"

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 01:14 PM) Yeah and adjusting to the new trajectory takes time even if it is just the opposite of RF. If an outfielder spends his entire career in RF (where he's an above average defender) you can't just expect him to switch to LF on the fly without some sort of extended adjustment period. However, that throw he made to first early in the season...spectacular!

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) Ugh, no thanks. Compare him and Getz/Nix. If those were the only options, and you couldn't shoot yourself, which would you take? I'd probably be willing to part with something small we didn't need to pick him up for a year or two. -

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 12:59 PM) The problem with Chambliss' runoff is that Chambliss started to fall apart a couple weeks ago. If he can't recover in the runoff, there's no guarantee of anything. There are a lot of people around the country that want Chambliss gone, specifically for what he did to Cleland to win in 02. And I think that means a great outpouring of support for the Dems in that runoff. Lean Chambliss but by no means a sure thing. On the other hand...Chambliss gets one potential advantage in a runoff. He doesn't have to go up against the Obama turnout machine. -
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:33 AM) What's the latest on Begich/Stevens (I cant believe this is close), Merkley/Smith and Coleman/Franken? I know Franken has pulled ahead and Chambliss/Martin is going to a run off. Franken/Coleman will not be decided for over a month. Anything under 15000 votes requires a recount, and it's going to be a few hundred either way. Norm Coleman is already on TV saying this election is too important to have a recount.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:33 AM) I hope Bob Gates stays on as Secretary of Defense. I really dislike the idea of keeping that notion around that Democrats can't be trusted on defense and they need a GOP type daddy to take care of them otherwise the mean military will hurt them. I understand that's not the only reason for keeping Gates around potentially, but it's so deeply ingrained in the media that I'd really like to see that be the one position given to a Democrat in the cabinet. That and energy. No Republicans for energy.

I'd consider a Broadway level deal for him. -
You know, taking some major steps backwards on the backwards missile defense plan and pushing it back to the research phase might well have a major impact on this sort of move.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 09:55 AM) And we have a brand new P.O.S. in Blaine Luetkemeyer so enjoy him, America. Thanks Missouri, you never...oops, sorry, you always disappoint. Even with the ones who stayed or were added...just by getting rid of Marilyn Musgrove...there's a big improvement. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 09:58 AM) As of right now, the house count (per CNN) is 253 Dem, 172 GOP, and 10 still undecided. If the Dems get 8 of the remaining 10, they'd have exactly 60% control. Which, notably, means nothing in the House except the number. -
QUOTE (The Critic @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:47 AM) REDISTRIBUTION OF FUNDING IS SOCIALISM!!!!! Add me to the list of people who want to see alternative energy sources as a priority. It's been way too long in coming as it is, I'd love to see some progress on that front really soon. A significant amount of progress has been made already with the government basically standing in the way. If they start helping rather than obstructing...

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 09:07 AM) i think 2 or 3 in the first term I could actually see 4 reasonably within the first term. The Left leaning members didn't want to let Bush have the chance to totally remake the court. I think we'll get at least 2 next year alone.

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 04:46 AM) Looks like Smith survives in Oregon. Ted Stevens appears to have survived in Alaska as of now, although it's not official yet. In other words, it appears highly likely that Governor Palin will get to appoint a Senator. Perhaps Senator Palin? Georgia appears highly likely to go to a runoff election (no candidate getting 50%) once the absentee ballots are counted. Minnesota has a 300 vote margin right now.
