  1. Maybe they just decided to play nice & actually stop polluting?
  2. And once again...Iowa, and therefore the whole election, still appears to be a toss up.
  3. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 01:00 PM) Somehow, they have to get the message. But, putting a drop dead date isn't the answer. There are other diplomatic ways to make that happen, and it better be soon. Haven't you been saying pretty much exactly that for the last couple years? That something needs to change and soon? How long does soon last?
  4. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 07:39 AM) I remember many people thinking the same thing about AJ Pierzynski AJ wouldn't cost 5/$90 or whatever Hunter ends up getting to bring in.
  5. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 09:59 PM) His dedication to poverty reduction on the government dime, you mean. How much has he donated to charity himself? That would be true dedication to poverty reduction. Maybe a sizable donation to help feed and shelter the homeless (that he helped to make with the subprime loans). It's easy to be compassionate with other people's money. A little harder to do so with you own. How much money does a rich man need to give up before he's allowed to care about the poor?
  6. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 11:35 AM) Well you know, since he's really our president (because Bush isn't), he's "owed" the office. Gotta admit...it's hard to imagine how he could have done worse.
  7. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 10:29 AM) Isn't it a very real possibility Wasserman is another Shingo, and gets lit up early and often next year? The guy has done a decent job, but when your delivery is really the biggest thing you bring to the table, you have to figure major league hitters will figure it out. I'm very worried KW is going with the attitude that all the players are going to bounce back and thinking all his young players will blossom next year. If thats the case, at least I won't have to have playoff money in by September. Shingo was not "Figured out". Shingo couldn't throw the floater for a strike his 2nd year, so guys either just sat there and took a walk or waited on the 89 mph fastball.
  8. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 09:27 AM) Every time KW opens his mouth, especially when he says "we're fine with what we have", you have to ask yourself... why would he go out there and say "we're trading half the team"? All that would accomplish is put him in a weaker position of negotiation. I'd be shocked if there weren't multiple big moves this offseason. Looking at the 2007 Opening Day roster, and comparing it to the 2008 one (once its done), I'd bet you will see 7 or 8 new faces. Well, to be totally fair...when you start with Hall, Owens, Fields, Wasserman, and Logan/Myers, you've got 5 of those new faces between the 2 opening days covered without making a single deal this offseason.
  9. The U.S. isn't the biggest concern/problem area for climate change, its developing countries and their new fuel needs, and their use of older technologies. Like those Chinese and Indian monsters. If they don't do anything, why should we? D'Oh.
  10. QUOTE(spiderman @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 10:47 AM) They would probably tell you that Myers brings experience, and is strictly a specialst. Logan can make the team if he earns it. All I have to say to that is: .288 .355 .385 .740 .229 .302 .301 .603 Those are the splits of the 2 guys in question this season against left handers.
  11. How many people are voters allowed to vote for? Is it just 1, top 3, or what? I could fully believe that he's performed well enough to be top 10 on some people's ballots. But the only way I consider a Closer to be on top is if there's a closer who has absolutely phenomenal numbers and no obvious starting pitcher that stands out. I mean, like in the late 80's, Eckersley or something like that (never gets to 3-2 on a lefty until Gibson in game 1 of the World Series in 88 for example). Right now, we have 3-4 guys on winning teams who have won nearly 20 games, with things like the league lead in strikeouts and so forth. No matter how much I like Bobby's performance, I think you have to look at the 200 innigns guys before the 60 innings guys.
  12. QUOTE(spiderman @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 10:10 AM) Bobby Jenks Mike MacDougle - he's under contract Matt Thorton - he's under contract Mike Myers - he's been ok vs lefties, and the White Sox want some more experience in the pen next season Wassermann - most don't believe he's for real, but he'll be in the mix in camp I don't think I can put into words how silly it would seem to me to be to put Mike Myers into next year's bullpen ahead of Boone Logan as our LOOGY with the way each of them has performed this year and the cost associated with both of them.
  13. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 08:32 PM) Anchors routinely did commentary pieces. Cronkite did so rarely, but he did so. On Vietnam, no less. Walter Jacobson does so as well, locally. So did Ed Murrow. So does Brit Hume. David Brinkley did. And yet somehow I can't see Katie Couric having the cojones to stand up and say, on air:
  14. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 08:16 PM) This outrage, just like the outrage of Limbaugh calling soldiers who fought that are critical of the war effort "fake soldiers" is stupid and just meant to hide the failings of the people in power. Just like General Betray Us outrage actually hid the actual news for a good three days. It's all stupid. Dude, the outrage over that ad covered up the actual news for well over 3 days. The ad ran on like hte 9th or 10th of September, and the House was voting to condemn it last week. It's still coming up. The "outrage" over Mr. Limbaugh's comments are, as far as I'm concerned, a totally fair response to that manufactured outrage. It's actually probably a worthy look at how biased the media is; compare the coverage that Moveon's ad gets to the coverage Limbaugh's latest statement gets, and let's see which side winds up getting the coverage. (Somehow, I doubt that the condemning Limbaugh bill which will be introduced in the Senate on Monday will go anywhere, but we'll see)
  15. Newt Flip Flops, decides now he's not going to run.
  16. The U.N. is dispatching an envoy to Myanmar to attempt to negotiate an end to the crackdown. The crackdown currently appears to be working. There were limited demonstrations today after the much larger demonstrations earlier in the week, and they were broken up fairly easily.
  17. Yup. This about sums up how I feel about that Biden Resolution.
  18. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 02:04 PM) If true, this is an important and encouraging development: http://www.newsdeskspecial.co.uk/burma/ It's clearly important, but you never know if something like that is encouraging until you see the end results. It could well be the harbinger of a civil war.
  19. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) OK, I'll mark those two candidates off, and he can take one, and I'll give you the other. And we'll decide which one gets which candidate based on election returns from the state of Illinois...
  20. I actually got scared when I saw the ESPN headline "Cooper named permanent manager of Astros".
  21. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 11:16 AM) To be honest, it sounds like the big ones are all like that. I haven't seen anything that sounds any different really. Unfortunately, with the disaster that is our campaign financing system, how much choice do any of them have? Small donations online are nice and are really piling up for some of these guys, but still a huge chunk of the billion dollars it's going to take to run this campaign is coming from big donors, and you just can't live without them right now can you?
  22. It hasn't been picked up by any major media bigger than a few blogs and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, but last night, the Senate Unanimously (voice vote) approved an amendment to create an independent, bi-partisan, 8 member panel who's job is to investigate contracting in Afghanistan and Iraq, looking at among other things the billions of dollars that have simply vanished to the process which has allowed companies to acquire contracts without bidding and hold onto them without problems.
  23. QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 09:46 AM) The Dems have Rock Stars running, that's for certain. It would be the most incredible politcal event of our lifetime if the "Big Three" arrrived at the convention with a floor fight for the nomination. I get goose bumps thinking about it. It won't happen. Stealing this from some pathetic hippy filled liberal blog, which I think is absolutely correct.
