Cubs claim Podsednik; Pods still here (for now)
Balta1701 replied to Linnwood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 11, 2007 -> 09:53 PM) I don't share the same philosophy most do when it comes to the lead-off hitter. I'll take the guy thats gets on base at a .370 clip and steals me 10 bags rather than the guy that gets on at a .330 clip and steals me 40. Now there are obvious exceptions to the rule (Ichiro,Reyes, great to have both) but if we were to bring back Rowand, I have 0 problem with him the lead-off spot. Now Rowand might have a problem with it, but if Aaron can come anywhere close to the .386 OBP he currently holds, the Sox offense will be tremendously better. Just watch, ARow won't put up anything close to these numbers in the next few seasons. -

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 11, 2007 -> 09:00 PM) If he is ready to go, ship Pods ass out of here and get him in the line up. He is another one that we need to find out if he fits into our future plans or not. Hate to say it, but after this little injury, I'm getting more and more convinced that Ryan just isn't ready for the show yet. Another offseason of working out, getting in shape, playing some winterball, maybe adding a few more pounds of muscle and maybe sometime early or middle of next season. -
1. Mitt Romney 4,516 31.6% 2. Mike Huckabee 2,587 18.1% 3. Sam Brownback 2,192 15.3% 4. Tom Tancredo 1,960 13.7% 5. Ron Paul 1,305 9.1% 6. Tommy Thompson 1,039 7.3% 7. Fred Thompson 203 1.4% 8. Rudy Giuliani 183 1.3% 9. Duncan Hunter 174 1.2% 10. John McCain 101 0.7% 11. John Cox 41 0.3% In 1999, there were somewhere around 24,000 participants in the straw poll. This year, the total was around 14,000. Either Iowa has lost an awful lot of people, or there was a vastly lower interest level.

QUOTE(spiderman @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 06:11 PM) This arguement is ridiculous. The army is a volunteer army, and if they are concerned that the President, whoever it may be, is going to be a Hawk, then don't join the army. Once you do, they own you, and they should get the full support of our country. If Mitt Romney wants to increase the size of the military, great. Again, it's a volunteer army, and if the citizens buy what his administation is selling, I don't see the problem. Fine. Just don't suggest that traveling around in a Winnebago in Iowa campaigning in a Presidential race is comparable to military service. Romney saying "They are adults and it is their choice whether they choose to serve or not" is a gigantic leap above "they're serving America by working on my campaign and that's kinda like being in the military because I'm such a moron"

QUOTE(max power @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 08:26 PM) I wouldn't mind seeing david riske back here. I would much rather see some mix of Aardsma, Masset, Haeger, or something like that. Quite a bit more talent in those guys than in Riske, just need to develop them. And quite a bit cheaper. And...imagine if Riske goes Type A again this year like he did last year, and somehow we wind up with the 16th pick because of a few more down-the-stretch wins. Would you give up the 16th pick in the draft for Riske? I sure wouldn't.

QUOTE(My Dixie Normus @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 05:20 PM) What about Jeff Samardzija? He is sucking big time in the minors but he was supposed to be pretty good going into the draft. Last I saw he was 0-5 in A ball with a 5+ ERA. I'd rather see the Bears get Samardzija than the Sox but.... Oh for God's sake no...Especially considering he has a contract that pays him a ton of money if he stays with baseball that presumably the Sox would wind up having to pay. -
QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 01:15 PM) Costco is the place to be. I got an 8 pack of Zest at the grocery store last Sunday for $.50. Costco doesn't always win.

Well, here's the way I'm going to think about it: If it comes down to it, and you don't have the gun to your head option, pick one: Fields @ SS Uribe @ SS Out of those 2, I think I'd go with Josh. Hopefully Kenny gets his hands on a real SS somewhere so we don't have to contemplate that.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 11:24 AM) That said, I am not as harsh towards Erstad as a lot of people are. Before he got injured, he was producing. IMO his injury is the only reason people can say much negative about him. Darin Erstad hit .264 with a .652 OPS in the first half. The only reason people say he was producing was that the other 1/2 of the lineup was hitting around .200, and he looked good by comparison. -
John McCain Being beaten in Iowa polls Amongst only Iowa Republicans likely to go to the Caucuses... By Barack Obama.

QUOTE(Sonik22 @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 10:08 AM) If we can keep grindy out of the lineup the yes. Also we need to start Richar every day! If a lefty faces a lefty or a righty faces a righty, God kills an angel.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 09:49 AM) I think that Blyleven does color on TV, but I could be wrong about that. The "Circle us Bert!" signs would be less effective on the radio.

QUOTE(Beltin'Bill @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 09:30 AM) Are you assuming both Jon and Javy are traded this offseason? Javy would have to bring back a lot in return based on his effectiveness, innings, and salary. I think either Jon or Javy will be traded this offseason, most likely Garland just because of the contract situation. If we don't move any of them, thne we're spending $45 million, or just under 1/2 of this team's salary, on our starting rotation alone next season, and with the pitching depth we do appear to have in the minors, especially if Gavin Floyd can grow into something useful, there's very little reason to lock up so much salary there and to not use one of those guys to help fill the other holes on our roster (SS anyone?)

QUOTE(WCSox @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 09:19 AM) Small sample size, but he looked pretty good in those two innings of relief last night. He was hitting 93 regularly on the Comcast gun, but I'm not sure what the (more accurate) stadium gun displayed. Moreover, he was locating his forkball. I think that command has been a much bigger problem for him than velocity this year. If he can re-gain that, we may not want to trade him next year. One way or another, Jose will be a starter on this team come April. His contract leaves us no choice but to keep giving him chances. The only question is...aside from Mark and John...who are the other 2?
