QUOTE(Brian @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 01:37 PM) I'm with you in a way. I don't want to give up McCarthy because that means we are picking up Garcia's option for next year and I would of rather have given a younger, cheaper, pitcher in Brandon a chance. Too bad we couldn't move Garcia for Soriano, would free up money to extend Alfonso. But KW knows what he is doing. As far as I know, Garcia does not have an option next year...his contract is guaranteed next year.

Sox get Mike MacDougal for Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 01:37 PM) Or Brandon jumps on a flight to DC . . . Worst idea ever. -
QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 01:35 PM) Look at how poorly he's been playing left. Do we really want Mackowiak-style defense out in CF every day? I'd vastly prefer Mack's defense in CF to Podsednik.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 01:33 PM) we still have Broadway, McCulloch, Russell, Whisler, Harrell, Haeger, Phillips. We still have arms people. We cannot deal McCarthy. -

It's also going to be interesting to see Cooper working with MacDougal. -
Cooper + MacDougal? I think that'll work out damn well. Jenks, Thornton, MacDougal? Remember last season how people were complaining about how the Twins kept bringing all those great arms out of their bullpen? That's some serious gas in ours now.

QUOTE(AbeFroman @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 12:52 PM) keep in mind that the texas rangers owe 10 mil on each year of arods contract. so arod for 15 mil is more financially possible The Yankees do not have to give up that $$$ if they trade ARod. They get to keep as much as they can negotiate out of whoever they're trading with. The money goes to the team, it doesn't follow the player.

QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 12:47 PM) If we did sign Soriano long-term, would people think that was worth giving up McCarthy? I'm torn. Soriano is a great player (and we could technically slide him over to 2B after this season and not pick up Iguchi's option; a LF is always easier to find than a 2B) but McCarthy might be our 3rd or 4th best starter now, and perhaps our best 2 years from now. If the only thing we got was Soriano...absolutely fishing not.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 12:47 PM) Soriano and Uribe for A-Rod?????????? If we're giving up McCarthy, that's one of about 2 guys in baseball I'd say we could deal with getting back. The other in fact I believe wears Uribe's number.
-
By the way, hasn't it been like decades since the Royals and Sox have traded anything?
-
Does anyone actually think that Williams would be stupid enough to ship out McCarthy in this?

QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 10:16 AM) The only thing is, if he had not been "preparing" whatever that means, would they not have confronted him long ago about this? I doubt they'd just let it continue and then just suddenly fire him. Who are we to say that no one did?
-
You know, it might be worth noting that the Nationals actually have very little need for a young 3rd baseman, since they already have a pretty good one of those. They might not want Fields...they'd have the same problem as us; no where to play him except the outfield, and since he's still not really seen playing time in LF, it'd be a while before he'd be ready to play anywhere for them.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 10:09 AM) We get Soriano for this season, and then he walks. Fields and Broadway is a pretty steep price for a rental. Jerry Crasnick in his chat this mornin' also said that the Nats were currently asking for 2-3 prospects in exchange for Soriano, but they'd probably wind up settling for one.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 10:04 AM) The problem is that too many people believe that because the law gives them a legal right to do something, they have some sort of moral justification for exercising that right. But the contrary problem is that too many people believe that because they find something to be morally wrong, the law should make sure that no one has the right to do whatever action is being considered.

I love how my pointing out of Cheney's politicizing of this mess got 0 responses and the Kerry one got 3.

QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 09:01 AM) Serious question here, why is Fields a no doubter and Sweeney isn't? I recall Sweeney having a pretty good spring, even showcasing some of that 20-25 home run power the scouts say he has. Is arbitration the only reason? Last time I checked, Sweeney was still sitting on only like 7 home runs. We're talking about a difference between a guy with a .772 OPS and a .939 OPS. On top of the whole age difference thing.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 09:19 AM) I can't comment on Widger's game preparation (or lack thereof), but I do know that Sandy has always done a pretty good job of calling games. He can't hit anymore, but it's not like Widger was tearing the cover off of the ball either. If Alomar could even get a bunt down, that'd be an improvement.

QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 08:51 AM) Please show me where did I say the Sox went to the media with this information... Sure seems there like you're saying that the team did something inappropriate in coming out from behind the closed doors to me. Was that post directed at some other incident that came forwards that I didn't hear about?

QUOTE(Soxy @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 07:38 AM) Saddest part was about polar bears and how the diminishing sea ice is wreaking havoc on their feeding patterns and how more and more cubs aren't making it out of adolescence. The polor bearologist said that due to consistently decreasing body mass, polar bears may be extinct in the wild in 30 years because the females won't have enough body fat to breed. (Yeah, that's right, I said polar bear extinction is sadder than losing NYC) Godless killing machines...serves em right!

QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 07:51 AM) Ryan Sweeney? Hopefully not. He won't be ready for regular time in 2007, even as a backup, unless someone comes down with a major injury. Calling him up at the end of this year would only start his arbitration clock a year before it should be started. Barring injuries, he shouldn't see the big leagues until the latter half of next year. Josh Fields on the other hand will be called up without a doubt.

Javier Vazquez needs to pitch like he has some Marbles.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 08:03 AM) The main problem for any team trying to acquire ARod? Under the terms of the deal with the Rangers, the Yankees are receiving some $52 million of the remaining $108 million on ARod's 10-year deal between 2007. and 2010. I can't see them dealing ARod without a hell of a lot coming back when they "only" are paying him $14 million/year. The Yankees would still get to keep that money UNLESS they negotiated with another team to give it up.
