  1. Did you just call Carlos Rodon a cy young candidate?
  2. Or they’re doing what they keep saying and putting both in the bullpen.
  3. Ironically, as The electric grid was developing in the 1960s, there were major multi day blackouts including a famous one in the northeast that taught everyone else about the ability to have a cascading failure across a large area and the need to take steps to prevent it. Eventually there’s going to be another one in the western US - when the San Andreas fault breaks near Los Angeles, it will knock out the entire Western US grid all the way to El Paso. It’s a 1 in 150 year event when it happens. Does that mean that there should be no preparation for it? I’ve had colleagues in California working 15 years on trying to harden that infrastructure. The ability to say “well things could be better but that’s too hard so they won’t be” is a disappointing feature of American life that I’m sadly getting used to.
  4. I would have hated giving up Crochet if they were going to do the hard work of turning him into a starter. I would have no problem giving up Crochet if they were going to bury him in the bullpen. Welp.
  5. My colleague who shared this is now just hoping his gas bill isn’t in the thousands this month, he doesn’t know. It’s both remarkable and completely expected that this is legal. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/deep-freeze-subsides-texans-now-face-electricity-bills-10-000-n1258362
  6. At least as of now you can’t play games like that with the tax, it is the average of the guaranteed money divided by the years. Since he has an opt out, the full year is counted toward the CBT.
  7. The only thing Vaughn could do that would genuinely surprise me is come up and hit like Mazara. He's supposed to be an excellent, experienced, ready to go from the start hitter.

    2021 Catch-All

This is the view looking down on the rover from its rocket-powered skycrane system that is in the process of lowering it to Mars's surface. I think they will eventually have video of this.
  9. As long as you promise that if something goes wrong this year you will join in the group calling for his head and refusing to spend money on the team until he’s gone.
  10. One NL pennant, 4 division titles, 6 playoff births since he retired for St. Louis. 11 playoff appearances, 7 division titles for the As, just under a 50% success rate at making it.

Successful touchdown! New Mars Rover everyone!
  12. A $3 million contract to hold the position until May so that Vaughn can have an extra pre-arb year doesn't sound much like an everyday role.

    2021 Catch-All

2:55 pm Central Standard Time - our second SUV sized vehicle will be (hopefully) touching its wheels down on Mars while a large set of hydrazine powered thrusters hangs overhead. Other feeds here, I've currently got the JPL Raw stream open. https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive
  14. Well, when it comes down to it, 4 of the guys on your list have earned >$120 million in their careers, Gardner has earned $85 million (Gennett is the lone one who hasn't already earned a big contract). If you've earned that much in your career and you're already dealing with pain from whatever nagging injury has beset you, do you really want to gear yourself up for a 5 week spring training and then spend 6 months away from your family for an extra $3 million?
  15. Oh I’d sign it in his position also. But that doesn’t mean it’s a terrible risk for the team - if he’s anywhere near this good, then this deal is a bargain for his career and the kind of move that can keep their stadium full for 10 years. And, they may well also be able to get some injury insurance on a deal like this given his age, to hedge against that risk.
  16. How obnoxious would it be to be 90 minutes late to a Zoom meeting?
  17. He might have cost himself $100 million if there’s another pandemic and baseball goes half a decade without fans. If he was an all time great and salaries continued growing at 5% a year, he probably gave up twice that. If the next CBA were more balanced than the current one, he would have given up even more than that.
  18. Jerry, Tony, and Bob say things that sound good to them without realizing how it comes off to anyone else. We saw that with Bob’s “DUI is awesome” or whatever it was last fall.
