Twins vs White Sox 9-23 Official Gamethread

Man, like 3 months ago I never would have imagined getting back into my office, finding a game in the 8th inning, and seeing Jose having thrown 89 pitches. Thank God the Yankees made that deal. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 04:27 PM) BTW, there's a good chance we'll face Jason Grilli when we play the Tigers next series. Forgive my ignorance on this one, but is that good or bad? -
Garland and Buehrle have no shot any more. Not this year anyway. Not with Colon already having 20 wins, and most people thinking of our team for the last month than for the dominant pitching of the first half.

Is the Big Hurt not even traveling with the team?

If memory serves, he did drop by last time they were in Texas, although I wasn't here to read about it at the time. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 03:47 PM) And I don't see many other teams resting 3 starters in the same game about 15 times during the season. Subbing a player into the lineup every game is fine...it's good to get guys rest. But why do it all at the same time? Actually, I wonder if anyone has really sat down and fully did the math on this strategy - even Billy Beane. Think of it this way...if I can make my highest probability of a win occur when I play all 9 starters, any substitution would create something of a decrease in that probability of a win. If I then substitute a 2nd player, I would again see a decrease in the probability of a win. But let's say for a moment that the effect of the first substitution is slightly greater than that of the 2nd substitution. In that case, it would actually be beneficial for your team to rest everyone on exactly the same day if players were going to be rested, on the grounds that once you take 1 person out of the lineup, each successive substitution might decrease the probability of a win less. In addition, it would probably depend on exactly which player you took out, and how big the difference was between the players. For example, taking out Konerko and replacing him with Timo would have a bigger effect than taking out Crede and replacing him with Ozuna. But if by resting Konerko, I've already conceded the increased chance that I'm going to lose, it would make more sense to rest multiple people that day and sacrifice the win that day in exchange for an increased probability of a win on other days. Billy Beane, hire me. -
QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 03:45 PM) I'm petrified . . . Well, that's a wacke thing to have happen to onesself.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 03:39 PM) If that Crede homer didn't lift them, I don't know what can. Jesus. Returning. And batting 3rd. That's about it.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 03:41 PM) I heard somewhere that lefties are reaching base at a .500 clip vs Duque over his last 10 starts. So what you're saying is he'd be a good replacement for Marte.

QUOTE(bigred3535 @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 02:46 PM) If we sign Billy Koch is it too late to add him to the postseason roster? Urge to kill...rising...

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 03:02 PM) I wonder how Tex will respond, since the ball is in his quartz now. Gneiss try.

QUOTE(Wong & Owens @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 12:20 PM) My $.02: I never understand why any gay people want anything to do with christianity. If a group says your lifestyle is immoral, that you're going to hell, etc-- then why the hell would you want anything to do with them? I completely agree that the school has the right to expel the girl. Not happy about it, but it is a private christian school, and christians don't agree with homosexuality. Therefore, they can prevent her from attending IMHO. I honestly think the parents were naive and dumb for sending their kid there, and the kid is who will ultimately suffer the most for it. I never understand why anyone in the U.S. Army wants anything to do with Christianity. The Bible says "Thou shall not Kill", not "Thou shall not kill unless your leaders tell you do do so" or "Thou shall not kill unless your own life is in jeopardy." The Bible doesn't make exceptions, so everyone in the army is a sinner condemned to Hell, and should never ever go to church.

QUOTE(1549 @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 12:33 PM) We just heard from a few relatives in New Orleans who we still had not heard from (sigh of relief). Everyone in the family is ok, pretty much all of them lost their homes. One of my cousins just bought a temporary place to live in Shrevport so the kids could get back to school. I know Rutgers has taken in quite a few Tulane students...It would be so demoralizing if Rita just twists the knife even more this weekend. Actually I have an uncle in lafayette, LA, who's a helicopter pilot. He got through the first one all right, but I think this one might actually hit closer to them.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 01:33 PM) THEY LIVE BELOW SEE LEVEL!!! This has nothing to do with luck. It has everything to do with piss poor location. That and the ground water pumping/cut off in sediment supply which has helped move that city back down below sea level.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 11:53 AM) No way this team spends money on a closer with Jenks on the roster. Oh come on, just think of the 9th inning we could have bringing out both Jenks and Wagner! -

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 11:48 AM) I thought that if Griffey Jr. really wanted to play right now, he could. The Reds basically shut him down as a cautionary measure. He's having season ending surgery now on both his hamstring and I believe on his ankle. I bumped that thread yesterday...give me a second and i'll edit this with the link. The link. -

QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Sep 23, 2005 -> 11:42 AM) We don't have Griffey on our roster, do we? No. Then he didn't make any deal. Considering Griffey hasn't played basically at all in September and is officially out for the season and having 2 more surgeries...I really don't see this as a huge negative. -
Happily...as another hurricane comes bearing down on the Gulf Coast, and the New Orleans Levees start giving way again...the man currently responsible for the rebuilding effort at the Federal Level...Karl Rove...has enough time to speak at Republican Fund Raisers in North Dakota.
