  1. For all of those calling the cameraman a wimp... According to his doctors, he's had a pair of herniated disks in his neck and another pair in his back over the years from carrying around that camera. He may have re-injured one of those previous injuries thanks to Rogers.
  2. QUOTE(DonkeyKongerko @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 05:34 PM) After checking, it is kind of funny to note that all three of our 8-game win streaks have included a sweep of the good old Royals. We next play them on July 25-27. @ K.C. We play Boston before them and Baltimore after them. In other words, the BoSox and the O's are in deep sh*t.
  3. Well, technically Garland was our 4th starter last year...our 5th starter for most of the year was Mr. Offday (Hell, I'd say he was even #3 for a while with Schoenweis in there)
  4. In terms of guys like Konerko, Crede, etc., I'm willing to live with them having 1 terrible month a year, as long as the numbers they end the season with are good numbers. I wouldn't have a problem seeing Konerko re-signed if the rest of the year is close to his June. I.e. if he ended up the season hitting .280 or .290 with another 40 home runs, and maybe got his BA with RISP up past .260 or so. The same thing with Crede - he had an awful May, but without that month he'd be hitting like .290. If he puts up a .280 BA for the whole season, I could care less how bad he did in May because that means he contributed the rest of the year. Even if you have a lot of streaky players, the odds are that they all won't go into slumps at once, and you can end up being carried by the ones who aren't, like how Iguchi and Pods carried the offense in May.
  5. QUOTE(DukeNukeEm @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 03:41 PM) The way we've been drawing this year, we might be able to actually keep Konerko and stay active in FA. If we hit the playoffs and dont go out like b****es in round 1. There will some extra money and a lot of expectations to improve on the team. I hate to say this, I truly do, because I want this team to be great for years to come... But aside from keeping guys like Garland and Pierzynski who are still arbitration-eligible, my absolute #1 thing that I want to see happen in the offseason is the re-signing of the Big Hurt. I do not want him to hit his 500th home run in anyone else's uniform. Call me sentimental wussy names if you'd like, but he's been the 1 player who's been here since I became a Sox fan, and I want him ending his career on the South Side.
  6. Already posted in the game wrap-up thread.
  7. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 03:25 PM) I sent him a disposable camera, and asked him to snap a few pictures of Kenny Rogers for me. Why are you trying to kill Sandy?
  8. QUOTE(AirScott @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) that's because the numbers are deceiving. for example, Trevor Hoffman's ERA this year is 3.95, but he gave up 4 runs in his first outing. with the few innings that relivers pitch, one outing can really make them look like they're having a bad year, but Hoffman's ERA had he not pitched that game is 2.70. he's been his usual self besides that game, which is why they say that. Didn't we beat Hoffman?
  9. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 03:23 PM) Possibly he deserves it, but I don't see three starters from the Sox on the team. Well, considering Kenny Rogers won't be going after yesterday... Schilling won't be going... No one from the Yankees will be going... Colon is probably in... Halladay is in... Clemente is in... Buehrle and Garland are in... That gives 5 starters... Who else can we make a case for? You can make a case for Bonderman or Johnson from Detroit, maybe Santana but it's a stretch, then I think if there's any more starting pitchers on that team you have to choose from Washburn (Anaheim) Young (Texas) and Garcia.
  10. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 01:41 PM) Skepticism is the right of every fan, but to get down on the Sox ability to win without good hitting is mind boggling. It just shows how good their pitching is and how solid they can be in the post season if they reach it. The problem here is that you assume our pitching will remain at a constant level all season. Given that El Duque has been inconsistent and injured, 2 of our bullpen guys have been inconsistent, we don't know how long we can count on Contreras, and this has thus far been a breakout season for Garland, Cotts, Politte, and a few others, the question remains; can we keep winning with pitching all year. We can if everything continues the way it has. But everyone knew in May that we would need the offense to pick up for this team to really put everyone away. It's showed some signs of doing it for most of June...we just need to not slow down (i.e. the past few games) for long periods any more this season.
  11. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 01:36 PM) You guys are right our offense rocks. Its smoke and mirror thats we are 28th in the MLB in singles, 30th in doubles, 30th in triples. Crede is a superstar, Kong hits to all fields, etc etc. Is there any way to look at those numbers for only June? I know we're still very low in triples, but 3 or 4 of our batters were absolutely terrible at the plate in May - Crede, Everett, Konerko, Dye were all basically guaranteed outs most of the time and produced virtually no hits. Those numbers have to be better in June, and as long as our guys don't revert to May form for more that a few games at a time we'll start to climb those lists.
  12. QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 01:33 PM) A team like Annaheim would be interested. They are looking for a DH. But I don't see KW trading him really... Even if you don't start him, it's a helluva bat to have coming off the bench. Especially during the playoffs. Houston, Atlanta, or even maybe Oakland also might be looking for a bat in the outfield if they all keep winning. But considering how KW has traded to get Everett twice now, somehow I doubt he'll be trading him away. And Everett is the reason Timo's playing time has dropped way off in the last few weeks. That's a good enough reason for me to not let him go.
  13. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 11:52 AM) Actually on Dye, he said he went to the Sox because they made him the first offer. Arizona offered him more money, but because the Sox already offered him a deal, he decided to take it, so the D-Backs had to settle for Jose Cruz Jr. who's hitting about .210. Actually I believe it was more that he had already accepted a deal in principle from the Sox...Arizona was calling him and upping their offer while he was taking his physical, and he wasn't going to back out on our deal after he had already given a verbal agreement, even though he was technically not locked in at that point.
  14. Venus Williams smashed defending champ Maria Sharapova today in straight sets to advance to her first grand slam final in 2 years.
  15. Again, checking the Radar, the rain looks like it has nearly passed - 10 minutes ago it was on the last few miles of the storm front. Starting time's going to depend entirely on how fast the Detroit grounds crew works. If we were in Chicago with Roger handling things, I'd say we'd be playing within 15 minutes of the rain stopping. In Detroit, i dunno.
  16. Something to watch for... CNNSI is doing one of their photo montages of the top-earning athletes in American sports. I found this little nugget to be quite amusing.
  17. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 11:34 AM) Yeah, on like Mark Mulder...isn't he a free agent after this year? Good lord, do you have any idea how much that guy's going to sign for next year?
  18. QUOTE(go-sox05 @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 11:36 AM) or have like solten base contest with like paul konerko David Ortiz Andruw Jones Manny Rameriz Mark Texiaria Carlos Delgado Some of those would be downright painful.
  19. Pods had 12 in 2004, and I think it's probably 1 of the biggest reasons he hit .240. Last year he was swinging too hard on every pitch (much like everyone else in our lineup), and because of that, he hit a ton of popups. Because he wasn't hitting the ball on the ground, he had no chance for his speed to manufacture hits for him, like he can this year. He hit 9 in 2003 when he hit .315. So yeah, he's due. But honestly? I wouldn't care at all if he didn't hit a single HR this year. I'd rather have him focusing on putting the ball on the ground. Every at bat. His job is to get on base and run, not to hit the ball over the fence.
  20. QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 10:56 AM) this game ain't getting played http://www.weather.com/activities/other/ot...229&from=search Look at the Radar, don't just trust the Weather Channel's hour by hour thing, the radar shows 1 line of storms that has been steadily moving through the area with nothing else behind it. Once the back of this line passes, the game will be on. It'll probably take another 45 minutes or so, but there will be baseball within 2 hours unless Detroit's field is in terrible shape.
  21. Time to bump this thread... This MM to Republican Senator Chuck Hagel is easily the funniest thing I've read all day.
  22. QUOTE(Traveler1776 @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 10:46 AM) The one thing you always have to consider is how many World Series rings do the 1990's Indians and 2000's Twins have? None. While I'm not for completely mortgaging our future, if the right guy(s) are out there, you have to go for it -- even at the expense of good prospects. I'd love to put together a team that wins consistently like the Braves of the last decade and a half, but I also want to see the White Sox win the Series more than anything. Kenny has been better at signing quality free agents than in making impact trades or developing young talent, so if the right guy(s) is out there, you gotta go for it. I do agree, though, the Sox have seemingly remade their organization into one that plays better fundamentals, has locked up some of our key players and is moving forward with some good looking young talent on the horizon. On the other hand...how many rings to the Braves have? (hint...I'd lose in 13 playoff series to get to that number if that's what it took)
