  1. No I think they're idiots, but I do think they're also liars and accidentally that made them millions of dollars.
  2. They said to expect big things last offseason also. Lying about that turned out to be a great way to sell more tickets.
  3. If the team is not going for Martinez, then Moustakas is my favorite FA option for that position. He's more useful defensively than Castellanos and thus is less of a clog at the DH position where Abreu needs to move soon, and also hits left handed, which I gotta admit that we legitimately need. I get why you'd spend the premium on Martinez if you're not spending premium dollars on pitching, he's the best hitter available. But if you're not going for him, then get the guy who gives you positional backups and lineup balance.
  4. Clearly they're not going to fire them for this but people have every right to question their decision making when they make a foolish one. When you make a wrong decision with a low likelihood of hurting you, most of the time it doesn't hurt you, so you can give a long list of names that didn't hurt you that much...and then every so often you do the same thing and it turns into a monstrous mistake, like the time they traded away some random international signing that no one had ever seen play.
  5. And the people in the organization who made the decision on who to call up are also gone in order to render it a moot point as their decision making skills no longer matter since they were fired. Right?
  6. I could say the same thing about blocking him with several multi-year deal guys. If this team signed Abreu for 3 years and Martinez for 4, they have made themselves extremely inflexible at 1b. If they brought in Martinez on a 4 year deal...but Abreu accepted a $19 million, 1 year qualifying offer, and the team was willing to let him go when Vaughn was ready, that works also, but of course that statement is inconsistent with the guarantee the owner gave the player about a lifetime commitment.
  7. If we're drafting the most advanced college bat and a 1b who shouldn't need much defensive work, with the 3rd overall pick - if he isn't at least ready for the big leagues by early 2021 then someone did something seriously wrong in their scouting.
  8. The Mets should never do anything close to that deal, that's just awful for Nimmo. And I'm not sure how you get to that payroll. If we start with $70 million including Abreu (the number I've been starting with assuming no Yolmer), $20 for Grandal is $90 million, $5 for McCann is $95, $37.5 for the 2 starters brings me to $132.5, Smith in the Bullpen brings me to $145. I note Rodon's money is missing, I don't have time to figure out what else is absent now.
  9. If the Mets don't have room for this guy there are 28 other teams that he could be traded to.
  10. I don't believe the White Sox should give up a Madrigal-level player for Nimmo either and yeah, I think the Mets should be holding onto this guy. Former first round pick who has had a successful season early in his career - that's a piece you don't let go without a strong return. This is where the failure of all of the secondary parts of the White Sox's system comes into play. All the good players we'd want to trade for - we don't have the ammunition. It's Madrigal/Vaughn or a bunch of guys who aren't worth much. We dont' have anyone around #75 who could be the centerpiece of a decent but not overwhelming package.
  11. I don't think I'd do anything resembling like that if I were in the Mets position unless I had some really bad medical news about him. There should be way better deals out there for that player if I want to move him.
  12. I don't have any idea why the Mets would give him up without getting something substantial in return. For a guy this far pre-FA, if they can't get something of that level for him, there's no plausible reason to move him. You can move him for scraps next offseason if you want, why move him for scraps now? Outside of that group, to my eyes, the White Sox have nothing of sufficient value to offer.
  13. I've long thought that opting out isn't worth the risk, but I'm risk-averse and baseball players have a habit of betting on themselves.
  14. And there goes Madrigal or something like that (since the Mets can't exactly use Vaughn), so now I also need Gennett at a minimal price to cover my 2b spot.
  15. Well to some extent they are, because there's only so much money to go around. Every dollar you want to spend on the DH position is a dollar fewer that this org will spend on pitching. I cannot figure out any reasonable way to budget the best pitcher this year (Cole) and Martinez at DH, while also filling RF, if there are some payroll limits attached and I also want bullpen help. Something's gotta give. I know we won't do Cole, but I can make Cole work on a $140 million payroll with Moustakas, Calhoun/Reddick, and good bullpen help. I can't do that if I replace Moustakas with Martinez unless I can push $155 million this year or I go for a cheaper pitching option. And if I have to stick to a $120 million payroll limit, and I go for Martinez, then my pitching addition is Quintana and my RF is Avi garcia, or something like that.
  16. You want to bring in both Moustakas and JD Martinez?
  17. Not just mis-scouting, it's the coaching staff's literal job to figure out how to harness the talent in that QB and they're failing at that part of their job.
  18. I very much disagree with the notion that the Bears are or should be anywhere close to blowing this up. If you put a pro-bowl QB on this team as-is, IMO they're right there with the Packers. They're top 6 in PPG given up by that defense, and that's with literally no help from the offense so the D has extra pressure on them. They have playmakers on offense, but they're being put in terrible positions and the QB isn't helping at all.
  19. So this QB gets 3 different coaches? That's pretty much the definition of a coach-killer. Anyway, fine keep him on the roster as a backup next year but there's a lot of 1st round QBs available this year, put another one on the roster. If he turns into Drew Brees and you've drafted Rivers...hey at least you have a good QB.
  20. Well, I'll disagree on this one - but that's of course assuming I get to spend money on pitching.
  21. Ok, so now on to the next step - Mike Moustakas has been at 110-115 wRC+ the last few years, hits left handed, and has greater defensive abilities than Martinez. While that's a clear upgrade with the bats, is it worth $60 million in extra commitments?
  22. There is literally nothing in that article that says "We are getting rid of Martinez", it says what I said in the post above - they need to get beneath the Tax but it will lead to some tough decisions. Somewhere out there, there's an article that says something about both Betts and Martinez from a few days after that one, but nothing definitive that says "getting rid of Martinez is guaranteed" as was presented there.
  23. I know they have a mandate to get below the luxury tax but have we actually seen anything this definitive? The last article I saw had them saying "Well we want to find a way to keep both Betts and Martinez but we know it's tough to do that and reach the payroll limits".
