2017 NFL off season thread
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 29, 2017 -> 04:10 PM) When it comes to Jay...my view is the media / someone will always air on the side of negativity. And just cause one team didn't want Jay doesn't mean the rest of the league didn't. If he wanted to, he'd be on someone's roster (not saying he'd be a starter...but he'd be somewhere). Yeah, I think there was enough interest where if Cutler wasn't a backup yet, he'd now be a backup in Baltimore. You can't tell me that a guy from the CFL is a better backup than Cutler or Kaepernick. But, you're talking about a guy in his 30s who has to manage diabetes being required to stay in football shape for 6 months and potentially take more shots after his salary drops from $18 million to $1-2 million when he already has kids. He'd have to really, really want to be an NFL backup to do that. -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 10:45 AM) Most likely leaving getting in late Thursday and leaving late Sunday. Only for sure plan is going to see Britney for my gf. Debating if I want to go to the Beatles Cirque Du Soleil or Hakkasen/Omnia. I think my gf wants to do one of those pool party dj things. It just happens the weekend we are going the DJs seem to be Kaskade, Tiesto, Garrix and Zedd. Weve seen all of them at least 2x, so it would be more to check out the club itself. Ive never been to Vegas, so just not sure how much difference there are in the hotels, and whether I should avoid staying at a place like Rio that is slightly off the strip. Nothing wrong with slightly off the strip. There are legit differences in how "luxurious" each hotel is. The older ones are more "classic hotels". There's then a mid-tier like the MGM and that class where the rooms are modern and there's lots of stuff to do but they're not extremely fancy. Then there's a bundle of really, really nice ones where you'll have trouble going wrong with any of them. The Rio is pretty close to the top tier but you don't have to pay the extra funds for being on the strip.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 29, 2017 -> 02:04 PM) yeah...wondering if this will shift the Sox draft philosophy next year? Will they look at taking Turang first?...or the highest rated SS in the 2nd. I don't think they'll consider Anderson at all when they're making their draft picks next year. If they have a top grade for a SS they won't hesitate to take a SS because their system doesn't have a high ranking SS at any level and because if Anderson does turn it around in a year or two there won't be any problem moving a guy from SS to 3b or CF or whatever opening they have. That is one of the nice things about SS's, they tend to be good athletes and you can move them to whatever is open other than the catcher's spot. After the first pick, I still generally expect them to go best available, but I do think it'll be a pitching heavy draft because they didn't pick up many pitchers this year, meaning they will have a whole lot of openings at lower levels for pitchers from next year's draft. That, and the White Sox tend to draft pitching heavy most years anyway.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) Wins are more important in this case. The Sox could lose every game left this season and still not finish with the worst record. They need PHI to pass them in wins in order to have the worst record. With the Sox now having dumped everything I think as we play more games we'll catch up in the loss column from the extra games, but yeah I'm watching to see Philly win those 4 games. They catch us in the win column and I think that's the pick.
-
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 11:14 AM) If Melky was put on waivers and claimed, would the Sox let the team have him for nothing? Just a guess - they'd pull him back the first time if they couldn't work out a deal, then put him on irrevocable waivers towards the end of September.
-
When you're trying to track the race for last place, do you focus on games behind in the win column or games behind overall? Because we've only won 4 more games than the Phillies.

Should Giolito pitch in Chicago this year?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 05:46 AM) Why do posters want Lopez and Giolitto to pitch in Chicago in games they want them to lose? Rookie pitchers sometimes struggle? -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 10:33 AM) Of course not. I didn't want to stop targeting pitching when people were going bonkers that we had no offensive talent in the system. Just keep acquiring the best talent possible. Right now, we're pretty heavy on position players at lower levels of our system and pretty heavy on pitchers at the upper levels of our system. Notably, RH in his last 2 deals targeted guys who were position players in the upper levels of teams systems, aiming for the area where we had playing time to give. I would not be terribly surprised to see them run a fairly pitching heavy draft next year. That's pretty ordinary for the White Sox anyway, so not exactly me going out on a limb there. -
Will Eloy Jimenez get to AA this year?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 06:02 PM) They will also not be spending s***ton of money until the team after the team is actually competitive. I do wonder if they won't be in the 2019 offseason FA pool just because of the names that are there, but we'll see. -
BIG PELF TO THE RESCUE!!! July 27th Game Thread: White Sox
Balta1701 replied to chetkincaid's topic in 2017 Season in Review
Hypothetical: Pelfrey gets into the 5th inning with the game close. You're the manager. The Cubs lineup turns over and starts its 3rd time through. Pelfrey gives up a hit to the leadoff man. Who do you trust more...Mike Pelfrey the 3rd time through the order or the current White Sox bullpen? And no, Death is not an option. -
So, I will totally claim having edited out the image showing the text because we have several words in there swear-filtered such that people can use this page at work and using images to get around the swear filter is a violation of the site rules. Just ponder what it means for me to have to do this to words from the White House communications director.

QUOTE (Username @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 03:44 PM) I think MiGo will go somewhere. Seems to be some interest and so many teams in need. At this point I think it's just about price with him, there are probably some offers on the table close to what we'd accept and we're holding to see if something better appears.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 03:29 PM) I know that's his job and that's the way things are but it's still scary to hear him say that on record, knowing what a dimwit we have in charge of such decisions. Like I said, if we get vaporized, well at least the scary immigrants are getting vaporized too.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 03:07 PM) This is not alarming... U.S. Pacific Fleet commander: I'd launch nuclear strike against China if Trump ordered it Um...I hate to say it...but wouldn't U.S. military personnel saying they'd defy the direct order of the guy given power over them by the constitution be equally alarming? We literally built a system with nuclear weapons where there's not supposed to be a veto. It's supposed to be "Mr. President there are missiles inbound do we fire back" - no time there for consultation with Congress. If we're going to elect leaders we don't trust, then well first of all shame on us and if we wind up vaporized we don't get to complain because we elected the racist twit, and second you should build a Congress willing to update that system under the guise of the occasional racist lunatic being elected.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 02:42 PM) So true. The next ~15 months of White Sox baseball is going to be really boring. I'm going to find watching these guys get called up to be too much fun. I haven't purchased my tickets for when they're in Houston yet because I'm hoping Giolito or Lopez will be on the bump one of those games. And I can't wait to see Kopech. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) Completely agree with that. It is actually why I like what we did with Cordell and even Gillespie, since we should be able to get these guys at bats (I'd put Delmonico and obviously Davidson was a CY example (hell Avi was that this year too)) in that camp too. You never know who ends up sticking. Hell, Swarzak and Kahnle were too -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 11:05 AM) I do know the Dodgers had a scout at his start vs. the Cubs on Monday when he was stellar specifically looking at him. That's great to hear, I've been thinking he's a perfect fit for their needs so at least they're thinking about it. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 10:54 AM) Fulmer hasn't passed the eye test in a year plus and by all accounts it sounds like Gilaspie doesn't either. Things could absolutely change, but Sox don't have a great track-record fixing guys. By the way, I'm not knocking the trade, just saying their is a reason the #74 preseason prospect was traded for Jennings. We need to hope the Sox saw some sort of mechanical flaw in Gilaspie that they think they can fix. While we may not have a great record of fixing guys, we do have one advantage - playing time. We can take guys like this and say "Here's a season or two, and a thousand PA's, go see what you can do". No one will care if we lose games if he hits .200 next year and then snaps it together afterwards. -
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 10:53 AM) Add in the fact the rotation is trash and the lineup is awful (no Avi for 2 weeks makes it even worse), we could get the #1 pick. I have no idea how this team wins a game the next couple weeks. Obviously they'll stumble into one at some point but goodness.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:56 AM) Bringing him up sometime would start his clock would it not? IF we are not planning to compete til 2020 what is the point of bringing him up sometime next year? When he gets called up next year we'll hear the same things we just heard with Moncada. "Sure he may not be ready all the way but he'll learn more at the big league level. Better to get him with our best coaches. Get him into the big league routine. Let's see what he can do". -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 07:01 AM) I, too, reacted to that headline with despair, but what's really being said is the word "sex" is in definition to the reproductive organs of the individual, not their sexual preference. Basically, they're saying new legislation needs to be passed to protect people based on sexual preference. While I hate everything about this, perhaps we can get some real legislation on the books. "Maybe if we discriminate even harder it'll force someone to write a better law."
