  1. Two things: 1.) Best thread title in Soxtalk history 2.) I saw this happen in person. As disappointing as it was, it was still pretty cool to watch something historic For those of you who are Facebook friends with me, I'm uploading the video of the final out right now (with extremely brief commentary at the very end).
  2. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 3, 2011 -> 04:23 PM) At this point Id say the likely result is Walker resigns or is given a different position with the club. I think hes pretty well liked, but at some point you gotta change, even if its just for changes sake. I don't think they should give him another job with the organization. That hardly upholds accountability which, along with attempting to light a fire under the team, is basically the only reason to do this.
  3. After making a fuss about fans not having to show up for this series, I will be attending tonight because I was given really good, free tickets. The upside of having a bad team is that people give up their tickets a lot.
  4. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ May 3, 2011 -> 03:03 PM) Shin-Soo Choo is the latest MLBer in trouble for being drinky. Epic year for DUI's so far. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/05/...-dui-yesterday/ You would think that this rash of DUI's would cause some blowback against the players by the Commissioner, but you know that won't ever happen.
  5. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ May 3, 2011 -> 04:48 PM) Do you really think it is awesome that they killed children? Eh, being facetious.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 3, 2011 -> 01:52 PM) Word is it wasnt a double tap to the head that killed OBL, it was in fact a Rock Bottom I read the first half of this thinking that it was serious, then I burst out with a nice, loud "HA!"
  7. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ May 3, 2011 -> 01:40 PM) Exactly, Larry Walker was actually a good hitter when he played unlike Greg (see below): Career G AB R H 2B 3B HR GRSL RBI BB IBB SO SH SF HBP GIDP AVG OBP SLG 9 Years 855 2,864 368 746 164 19 113 2 444 268 28 520 3 22 20 61 .260 .326 .449 Good hitters don't automatically make good hitting coaches, just as they don't automatically make bad hitting coaches or bad hitters automatically make good hitting coaches.
  8. LOL. There are now people suggesting that The Rock (the wrestler) knew what happened hours before Obama made the announcement.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 3, 2011 -> 01:22 PM) Amazingly, Wikipedia has the list, but doesn't include pakistan! The average height in india is about 5'3", which is ~6 inches shorter than for your average person in a western nation. Hm, I love Wikipedia. When does its inventor get his own movie? QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2011 -> 01:21 PM) Religion is a powerful thing. Then again so is money, and that didn't work out at all for us. I don't get what you're saying in the second part.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2011 -> 01:17 PM) It also means they are more likely to catch a bullet for dereliction of duty if they come to find out someone specific knew and didn't talk. The risk might seem worth it if the person taking the risk is a crazy fundamentalist or receiving large payments from a wealthy terrorist.
  11. QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ May 3, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) except for him being like 7 feet tall Haha, I wonder if he was considered tall enough in that area to stand out. I apparently don't know enough about Pakistani stereotypes. All I have to work with is the guy from Seinfeld.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 3, 2011 -> 01:10 PM) Who do we fire to fix that? You obviously can't place the blame for it directly on one person. What you can do is to fire a manager for years of underachieving that was owed, in part, to guys having unlucky years.
  13. QUOTE (Tex @ May 3, 2011 -> 01:07 PM) I assume they checked for any underground tunnels. Although 40 minutes might not have been enough. Also, someone had to have left to buy grocercies, beer, check the soccer scores, pick up porn.He could have been concealed. So many questions. It's a book I'd buy. For a guy who had been living on the run for 10 years and residing in an overwhelmingly Muslim nation, I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to move around on occasion with one's head covered in some kind of wrap or the like.
  14. QUOTE (Tex @ May 3, 2011 -> 01:05 PM) I am assuming that their military has more freedom to check civilian homes than here in the US. It would be very easy to understand someone hiding in a home like that in the US and not getting caught. We have so many privacy laws. Hell, we don't catch everyone on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list. I am a little surprised that Pakistan is trying to take some public credit. That would set them up for reprisals from what remains of Al Qaeda. At the same time, they probably punish their soldiers much more severely for disobeying an order. So say the highest ranking official in that specific area orders that no attention is paid to that compound, do you think some renegade Pakistani private is going to go snooping around the confines?
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:48 PM) Gotcha, we agree then. That's why I was laughing at the article claiming that the Pak military didn't know anything. That is a load of crap. I don't think you can blame the guy. The president of any country isn't going to come out and say one or more of his highest ranking officials was conspiring with one of the world's most wanted men. He had to paint the picture that Pakistan had a united front against him on the side of the US. And for what it's worth, I believe that to be the case for the most part. 90something% of Pakistani officials were probably intent on aiding in the capture or murder of bin Laden. But as is the case with many things, it only takes a couple of people working against the others to prevent or delay it.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:45 PM) I also think the vast majority wouldn't have predicted he would have his appendix out in the second week of the season, either. I'm just saying that it seems to suit our luck.
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:45 PM) Because it's a generally circumstantial and worthless statistic...my opinion of course. If you catch good pitchers, it's going to be low; if you catch bad pitchers, it's going to be high. A catcher only has so much effect on that. ESPN still has CERA (and I think it and MLB.com may be the only ones who keep track of it anymore...not even sure of MLB). Castro's CERA was 4.48. That tells me two things. 1) Freddy Garcia (probably) pitched better to Castro than he did AJ. 2) AJ had a lower CERA I do think Castro is a better option because he will atleast provide some power, but that will never happen, not with Ozzie's respect for AJ nor with AJ's contract. I've never actually looked at CERA in my life, so don't get the impression that I live and die by it. I just thought it'd be a way to either support or refute the idea that AJ improved pitchers. But wouldn't CERA be a good measure to distinguish between two guys on the same team? That is, unless one of them is the personal catcher to a certain pitcher or two.
  18. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:46 PM) The White House confirmed that the burial at sea was taped. Oh, OK. I still think that's best kept private, though.
  19. QUOTE (Tex @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:39 PM) I may have missed it, but is the assumption he's been there since 2005? I'm not surprised he was living in a mansion, with his money I assumed he was in some remote villa with access to multiple escape points. My second assumption was he had multiple safe houses to move to, never staying more than a week or two at any one place. Perhaps he grew tired of running. If he had been there since 2005 there is a bit of satisfaction knowing he was a prisoner, even if he was a prisoner in a prison he built. You know, I never thought of it that way. There is some satisfaction in that. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:30 PM) Agreed. I want to see this photo, the video of his "burial" and the video of the fight, if that ever gets released. Perhaps a bit morbid, but this guy has basically become a fictional character the last decade so any real photo or video would be pretty crazy to see. I think a photo would definitely be good. The burial is not something I'd like to see and they may not have even taped that. I feel like airing the video of that would definitely piss people off unnecessarily. A video or reenactment of the actual fight is only a dream, but that would be the coolest of the three.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:38 PM) So you are agreeing that people knew where BinLaden was? Yes, I said that from the very beginning. Somebody had to know.
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:25 PM) <!--quoteo(post=2369868:date=May 3, 2011 -> 12:11 PM:name=Milkman delivers)-->QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:11 PM) <!--quotec-->Steve, what exactly is that? Is it a real reenactment of the fight? It's telling me that it's private or something. <!--quoteo(post=2369869:date=May 3, 2011 -> 12:11 PM:name=Jenksismyb****)--> QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:11 PM) <!--quotec-->Says it's private, unfortunately. Sorry, looks like NMA took it off of YouTube. Here it is from another site. The Chinese are hilarious. Ugh, so it's a joke. Damn it. I was really hoping that they somehow released an actual reenactment using some sort of CGI. I know they were able to watch the fight live, so even though it seemed a little far-fetched, I was hoping that they actually did this.
  22. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:16 PM) AJ is the one that helps starting pitchers perform over their head? And here I thought it was Don Cooper preaching the cutter, control within the strike zone, and working within a pitcher's limitations. Who needs a hitting coach...more like, WHO NEEDS A PITCHING COACH? Seriously, I understand that AJ calls a good game, but he doesn't *make* these pitchers perform well. Hasn't Castro had a lower catcher's ERA since he's been here? I just tried looking on Fangraphs, but I don't see CERA on there.
  23. QUOTE (Yoda @ May 3, 2011 -> 11:58 AM) Don’t be afraid to be so keen if your accepting reality as it is. Whose to say Dunn wasn’t going to flop his first year in the American League? Most of his career he’s played against pitcher’s who he has a record against and of course he’s always had a defensive role. All he can do now is just sit there until his turn is up and hope for the best. You can try to be as optimistic as the next person, but you will be dissapointed more often than not. I think the vast majority of posters and the general baseball world agreed that Dunn would likely have a normal season for his standards.
  24. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 3, 2011 -> 11:44 AM) Supposedly Jake's final rehab start is Thursday, putting him on track for a return sometime next week. Can he hit? I'll worry about his ability to hit once we're sure that he can still pitch, as I'm not even sure of that anymore.
