Why does everyone want to dump Jon Garland?
White Sox Josh replied to VAfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Why trade Garland now? Unless it is for an impact player just keep the pitching staff as it is. This is the best rotation in baseball. So why not just keep him and go for it. If worst comes to worst you offer him Arbitration and get a draft pick. Let's win it next year and I think having Garland gives us a better shot to do that. -
QUOTE(Reddy @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 03:25 PM) you DID with ARow... now its kind of up in the air Anderson is a pretty damn good CF.
-
QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 03:18 PM) Except Garcia is much better. take a look at his Montreal stats. If Coop can fix this guy Vazquez is the better pitcher.

Barkley on ESPN1000
White Sox Josh replied to ThomeOnTheRange's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 03:06 PM) did you know that Barkleys wife is white? http://espn.go.com/classic/s/add_barkley_charles.html sounds like a pretty racist guy to me to be marrying a person of another race :headshake i have his new book. It is very good and I recomend everybody read this. You don't have to be a basketball fan to like this. -
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 03:16 PM) 40/40? You're talking out of your ass. How many 40/40 guys are there in the history of baseball. Calm down a little bit. Does he have both speed and power? Yes, but 40/40 is a damn big statement. let's see how young does in the MLB. He might be a huge bust for all we know.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:32 PM) Javier at a Glance Here are a few stats that stand out about him. Career ERA: 4.28 This is not exactly what you would call top tier stuff, but is decent when you look at what has happened over the last two years. 3.42, 3.91, 3.24 ERA of Vazquez his final three seasons in Montreal. 4.68 Average ERA between NY and Arizona over the last two years. 194 Average strikeouts per season over the last 5 years. 219.94 Average innings pitched per season over last 5 years. 68 Amount of homeruns given up by Javier over the last 2 years. 29 AGE, perhaps the most telling statistic, he has many years left. QUOTE OF THE DAY -Coop on Javier Vazquez, 12/14 Vazquez has the makings to be a Freddy Garcia with more strikeouts, which is a good thing. Time will tell if Coop can turn him around, and hopefully he can. Vazquez has the pure "stuff" to be as dominant as Jose Contreras on his best day, and maybe more. Vazquez's ceiling is higher than Garland, Garcia, and B-Mac, but we have to get him to reach that potential. Knowing Coop, I think it will happen to the tune of 18 wins and a sub 3.50 ERA with 200+ K's. Here's hoping. I have always been a huge Vazquez fan and have wanted the Sox to go after him for 2 or 3 years now. I am glad it was finally done.

QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:33 PM) I just have to ask have you seen Chris Young play a game? in Spring Training. I was impressed however like I said there is no guarantee that he will be a great Major League Player.

QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:30 PM) They are different people. Different prospects. Different talents. Completely different. And Reed did well last year for a rooke in Safeco.. whats your point? 141 488 61 124 33 3 3 45 12 .254 .322 .352 Not great stats. Also Olivo was supposed to be the next best catcher in baseball.
-
QUOTE(Ricky3353 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:21 PM) this deal really shows the sox' intolerence of Scott Boras-Garland's agent. I heard the sox initally offered a 3 yr 24 mil deal, and boras and garland declined. Also, How good is Chris Young? Who would be his MLB comparison? From what i heard he sounds like juan pierre. Boras is Crede's agent though.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:17 PM) You can't just throw Borchard's name out there forever. There has to be a real comparison before you use his name. Borchard had pretty good speed when he was in the Minors. He had monster power (still has that) and hit for a good average. What about Olivo? He was supposed to be the next Pudge Rodriguez. Never happened. Jeremy Reed?

QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:12 PM) Chris Young for Javier Vazquez is one sided enough. We have 5 starters without Vazquez, and we throw in our best prospect for a 6th. Then, we threw in two other pitchers. It doesn't make sense to me unless Garland is already being dealt elsewhere. Plus, Vazquez is not that good of a groundball pitcher.. the balls will be flying out of US Cellular Field. No, the biggest thing we gave up for Thome is Gio and Haigwood, our best lefty pitching prospects. And what does it matter if he's a future HOF? We are talking about how he will do next year, not how his career has been. And I was exctatic when we traded Marte for Mack. I just got the new ESPN the Magazine and for the K Korner section by Tim Kurkjian a scout had this to say about the Thome Deal:
-
QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:11 PM) EXACTLY!! You don't give up players with the caliber of Young 26 Homers 42 doubles and 30 steals. Wow Az got them selves a good one. Joe Borchard had great numbers in the Minors. Young is a prospect and prospects are suspects until proven otherwise.
-
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 02:00 PM) Yes. And the biggest thing we gave up for a future HOF'er in Thome was Aaron Rowand, who Brian Anderson is going to be better than anyways. And we dumped a mental midget for the best utility man in baseball. I swear, people are just LOOKING for reasons to panic even now with our World Champion GM. Remember a couple years ago when people were calling for KW's head. Wow have times changed. I love this trade and that Thome trade is a great trade for both teams IMHO. I agree with you about Anderson. I think we need to give him a chance.

QUOTE(forrestg @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:58 PM) Killer Js... good... I like the deal If we do deal Garland for some relief pitchers and all other deals from that point forward could we start getting some high grade prospects back. If we don't get prospects back KW will look brilliant for a while but down the road we'll have to buy players will have no one in our farm system like the yankees and cubs. i am gonna make a sig with that. Garland, Vazquez, and Contreras.
-
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:55 PM) I like it. Sure El Duque was a clutch guy in the playoffs with a cool leg kick but c'mon dumping his salary is huge and he would not help us significantly anyway. Vizcaino was the last RH out of the pen and is replacable to say the very least. Chris Young, now that's a loss that hurts. I still like it. Although it may depend on what KW turns Garland into. hopefully a contract extension
-
QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:53 PM) We overpaid... again. This seems to be a thing about this offseason. We are getting good players, but overpaying massively. how? Vizcaino is a Mop Up guy. You can find those anywhere. El Duque is the guy I didn't want to give up however you have to give up something to get something. Plus Young is a Prospect. Prospects=Suspects. There have been a ton of great prospects for the Sox like Olivo, Borchard, and Diaz. What have they done?
-
QUOTE(Wedge @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:49 PM) and so can pitcher #6, he just hasn't done it yet like the other 5. Exactly. I think they are taking the Buehrle approach with McCarthy. McCarthy will be in the Bullpen this year and next year or the year after that he goes into the Rotation.
-
Probably $92M. Once Garland gets a raise, AJ signs an extension, and Crede and the rest get raises it will be around that.
-
QUOTE(mr_genius @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:11 PM) I don't like this trade, especially if KW is planning on trading Garland. no he is not however just look at the rotation for a second. SP1: Mark Buehrle SP2: Jose Contreras SP3: Jon Garland SP4: Freddy Garcia SP5: Javier Vazquez Everyone of those pitchers can win 15 or more games.

take a look back at last years trade deadline

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:35 PM) Jose, B-mac, ANderson, MArte and the worse part.. A bag of Peanuts. That is where I draw the line no way I give those up. what kind of peanuts? -
QUOTE(Wedge @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:03 PM) Same guy. I think he dominated us when we played him last season. yes he did. I think Coop can do wonders with Vazquez.
-
It gives the Sox the best rotation in baseball and the best since the Braves days.
-
Anybody who is concerned about giving up Young remember this: Prospects are suspects until they prove otherwise. He might turn out to be a bust.
-
The Sox now have the best Rotation in baseball and a rotation that could have 5 15 game winners. Vizcaino is Vizcaino IMHO. He won't make much of an impact anyways. El Duque is the guy I am concerned about however you have to give up something to get something.
