Did anyone hear the crosstalk between Spiegel and Bernstein today when Speigel called him a Cynical Snarky Jag for ripping on people for drawing motivation from the Pagano speech to the Colts? It's on the podcast on the website, good stuff.

Melky Cabrera now off the board, signs with Toronto
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 06:06 PM) A player who has never produced less than a 1.5 WAR in a full season, and is coming off a 4.4 WAR season is going to make $7M a year, and that's a "bad contract". Well.....alrighty then. 8, 9, 10 the next three years. Year one was the cheapie, year 5 is 10 million with 2 million dollar buyout. And the guy has never actually played a full season either. the most he has played is 151, but he seems to average in the 130s. Not very reliable in the health or defense dept.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 05:39 PM) This was said about Bautista too. It's not an entirely impossible FB/HR to repeat or maintain, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him put up 30+ homers again next year. I don't think it's that bad of a contract. I think Bautista is more of an exception than a rule. And I am still not entirely convinced that man isnt juicing either, nobody has ever put up numbers like he has after being an incredibly mediocre players for 5 years of his career. Again, the guy is a 3rd base hack. But sure, he is worth 20 million last year. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 05:41 PM) With "my equation"? Lol. I appreciate the credit, but that's not anything I put together. And he was still producing a 1.5+ WAR when he was playing 3B, btw. I know it isnt anything you put together, but you have been throwing it around as if it somehow is a good explanation for bad contracts.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 05:12 PM) Last year he was also worth 4.4 WAR, or about $20M. They aren't paying him to repeat 2012, they are paying him for about a 1.5 WAR, which he has done 5 times in his career prior to 2012 (only year he didn't was 2009 when he missed half the season). Gmafb with your "he was worth 20 million last year" equation for WAR. Last year far exceeded any season he ever played in the majors and he didn't even play the position you want him to play because he was so bad and Lawrie isn't. EE isn't worth that paper. Bottom line. And I would be pissed if the Sox were the one buying high because of last year

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 04:32 PM) Jays OF: Bautista Davis Cabrera Encarnacion Lind Rasmus Gose It would be awesome to get Edwin Encarnacion from them to play 3B for us, despite him being a poor defensive 3B. They may see it as a "sell high" move, considering his monster 2012 season offensively, but I wouldn't count on it. How is that a sell high when they just gave him new paper, 5 years 35 million. I dont know that i would trust him to produce like he did last season and also put him at a position that he is very poor defensively for that money. Last year was an anomaly

Dobbins is sticking with his story that he hit Cutler in the chest, and it was Cutler in fact that ran into him. I guess he has to keep saying that to make sure the NFL doesnt go after him for a little bit more $ for headhunting. Pretty funny claim looking at the replay though

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 05:36 PM) Curt Schilling was just on ESPN talking about how the Marlins defrauded the city of Miami for their money. He is probably thinking that Loria is a schmuck, he only fooled a city while Schilling fooled a STATE!!!!

2012-2013 NBA thread
Alright, so I first off want to apologize for contributing to derailing this thread into a racism argument, and I also I want to say my larger point here is that heros are not defined by race, which is what many here were saying. Im not going to respond to the above comment because I think the point he is making isnt really going with what he started with. Back to basketball, this can be split into the buster if anyone feels it is worth further discussion. PM me and i will move it.

How is Marlins trade different from what the cubs are doing?
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 05:14 PM) Loria could be a complete douche but the Marlin fans did not show up when they won and had a terrible stadium he got a brand new stadium built spent a ton of dough on the team last year and they still did not show up. The Florida fans deserve whatever they get. They have two championships and zeero fan base. The state of Florida should not have professional sports. Transplant states like Arizona and Florida seem to have a lot of problems establishing their own fanbase. Lots of retirees and people who still identify with where they grew up before they moved to the warmer climates.

McAfee Antivirus creator wanted for murder
The McAfee story really is twisted. Earlier this year the Belize police raided his house because they thought he was running a meth lab(the charges were later dropped). After that he apparently became more and more paranoid that the police were watching and stalking him. McAfee has admitted to dealings with the gangs on the island too, so he has a shady reputation. His story is that the neighbor was killed after the dogs were poisoned so that it would look like he had a motive, and then the police could kill him when they brought him in for questioning. One other thing, apparently his 100 million dollar fortune is dwindled to 4 million in a few short years.

2012-2013 NBA thread
QUOTE (RZZZA @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 04:09 PM) I disagree, they NEED black hero's. Black people in the 40's and 50's used to watch TV and see only white people, and wondered why there were no people like them on there. It feeds into an inferiority complex and a white standard of beauty which has been scientifically researched (the doll experiment). When kids do not see positive rolemodels who look like them on TV and in the media they start wondering why. It still goes on to this day, it's hard for a black girl to feel beautiful when she looks on Tv and in magazines and sees nothing but lightskinned black girls with straightened hair. People definitely need hero's that look like them. Skin color and ethnicity matters, no matter how politically incorrect it is to say so. You should really only speak for yourself and not everyone else. You dont know what people need or want, at all, apparently. Nobody here is being disingenuous by saying that they dont feel they have to cheer for someone of their own race more than someone of a different race.

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 03:37 PM) Hey there's something to that. People want to cheer for people who look more like them. It's why I consider Paul Konerko a modern day white mans working class hero. It WOULD be different if he were black....and young...er WTF, no.

How is Marlins trade different from what the cubs are doing?
QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 02:50 PM) What exactly are the Cubs doing? rebuilding with the intention of contending to create more money for an extended period of time. Not making of pretend show of contending to build up the value of the franchise then shoving it in everyones faces and ditching the entire payroll so you can collect revenue sharing and tv money deal and keep it to yourself. It isnt hard to figure out, i dont know why you arent getting this.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 12:42 PM) I don't know what this means, he spent a boatload last year...they didn't work out and Lorias obviously impatient. Im not saying that they WILL but I dont see why not. I'd love to be the Marlins GM right now. It was a ruse.
