Penn State horror story
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 8, 2012 -> 04:55 PM) Right but the compliance usually is connected to some sort of tangible rule breaking. IE: To many phone calls, money, inappropriate contact during offseason. Compliance is usually not connected to, coach breaks law unrelated to sport, administrator breaks law covering up a crime that is unrelated to sports. Im trying to find another example where the NCAA put penalties on a school just for criminal conduct that was in no way related to money, and as of now I cant find one. (Edit) And the part about people being scared to report, that generally is more a whistle-blower federal thing, as opposed to NCAA. the closest situation I can think to this is the Baylor situation where the kid killed his teammate and the coach tried to cover it up

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 8, 2012 -> 04:14 PM) That would be the same argument any client makes as to why they shouldnt settle. The fact is you have to treat each case on its own. The uniqueness of the PSU case raises uncertainty, I never considered the NCAA settling before I typed it in that post. I was just giving reasons for PSU to file, I dont know what their actual plans are. The weird thing is, it isnt really PSU filing, is it?

QUOTE (Cali @ Aug 8, 2012 -> 04:11 PM) My whining comes mostly from the fact that this team has been in first place for 70+ days, and if they miss the postseason it will crush me (and I'm sure other people on the site) It will hurt 10000 x more than if they had just lost 95 like they were being predicted as losing. I would prefer losing 95 to missing the post season by 1-2 games It's tight right now and every single game matters, so we as message board fans who obviously know better get a little chappy when s*** like this happens. I hope these days off reinvigorate the team and they run all the way to October, but in the meantime every game is gonna be looked at under the worlds largest internet microscope. Why would it hurt you more? You expected and predicted failure, and they have done nothing but exceed your expectations. this, as they say, is all gravy. They are competing against a team that by some was predicted to shatter run scoring records, and have actually hung with them toe to toe. And even if they lose first place, they arent done. There is a long couple months left. You cannot keep the pedal to the floor the entire way, and Robin knows this.

Not really optimistic that Drew is going to stay in jail. Everything is circumstantial. Unless they have a bombshell witness or stacy turns up, I think he skates

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 7, 2012 -> 11:07 PM) Her coach in USA Today after today's lousy Gabby performance ... Karolyi said all the attention Douglas received after winning the all-around gold was too overwhelming. "She's a young girl," Karolyi said. "She wasn't in the limelight before so it was too much too quick. She wasn't able to focus the same." It shocks me they don't shield the athletes more. She had a lot of events remaining after winning the all-around. I think she was a victim of Tweet-world. There can't be that much media allowed into the village. The Karolyi's really shouldnt comment about the treatment of the young girls in their care. At all.

Waiver Wire Thread?
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Aug 7, 2012 -> 06:41 PM) So dumping a player who may be there only for his influence in the clubhouse isn't going to affect the clubhouse? That makes no sense. "Upgrading" over Hudson is absolutely pointless anyway. There is nobody good out there, and if you find someone useful, he's replacing Olmedo. The Hudson stuff is even worse than the complaining over Flowers' lack of offense. Upgrading over Hudson is absolutely not useless, the guy isnt even over the mendoza line. If you can get a solid defender back there so you arent forced to use him OR Olmedo, you do it. I would like to see both of them go, but if it ends up being Hudson I wont shed a tear. I like that you decided he is such a chemistry lynchpin though. Dont let the o-dawg go, the clubhouse will fall apart!

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2012 -> 05:16 PM) Whedon will also develop a pilot TV show for ABC centered in the Marvel universe (no other details here other than that). Rumors are that it is heavily about S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and how they interact with the superheros, as well as interact with the world in the fallout of Loki's invasion. Any way about it, it is awesome. Joss Whedon was born for this

Waiver Wire Thread?
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 08:50 PM) Hudson appears to be a clubhouse guy, and if he is, Kenny isn't going to screw with the chemistry to make an upgrade so slight that it probably doesn't even translate to 1 extra win through the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs. Olmedo is someone to upgrade over because he's only been here briefly, but even an upgrade there is far from dire. Whoever is out there, it makes sense to get a guy who can play 3B, pinch run, and preferably someone who has caught a few games before given how often Robin likes to have AJ PH for Flowers. The bat really doesn't matter at all since whoever we would bring in couldn't be expected to contribute offensively anyway. Defense + baserunning + attitude/personality in the clubhouse is all that matters. Removing a guy that plays once a month isnt going to screw with chemistry

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 03:05 AM) Humber had a hell of a year last year and you don't just luck into a perfect game in the MLB, dude can pitch. The pen may wind up being good for him in a long relief role. Humber had a hell of a first half http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...;t=p#half_extra Since then, he has been pretty mediocre to bad

2012 AL Central Catch-All thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 09:51 PM) It seems consistent, in an overall sense, but the reality is quite different. Take away our current run at home (what is it now, 12-2?) and things are looking quite different. We were one of the best 2-3 road teams in baseball for the first three months of the season until we went to BOS and DET. Who really knows what we are, but winning more consistently at home (especially when there are big crowds and more of an advantage than earlier in the year) is obviously going to be critical. It's kind of like when every analyst speaks for 10-15 minutes before a big NFL or college match-up and then throws out the, "well, it always comes down to special teams." Win your home games, win your games against divisional opponents, things will take care of themselves. So wait, according to you the home record doesnt matter because of their recent good run skewing their previous bad record, but their road record doesnt matter because of a 7 game bad run overshadows a previous 3 month good stretch? WTF?

Report: Sox unlikely to pick up Youk's option
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 09:21 PM) If the Sox somehow made the WS, everything would indeed change. The Sox would be a legitimate baseball power, making it twice since 2005. It would give the Sox a chance to reinvent itself again, to stave off that dumb rebuilding notion for a long time. Cmon Sox, keep it rolling. As long as KW is in charge, there will be no rebuilding. Only retooling on the fly.

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 09:19 PM) What happened to Dylan Axelrod? He wasn't THAT bad... Would you DFA Humber in order to let him pitch? Axelrod had a nice few starts, and a few meh starts, but I really dont think the guy has what it takes to be a part of this rotation. He is a nibbler, works a lot with smoke and mirrors, those guys tend to get flushed out once the scouting report catches up to the league. I am done with Humber and I hope that i dont have to see him start anytime soon(which means Floyd needs to get his head out of his ass), but if my choice is between Humber and Axelrod, I am choosing Humber every day and twice on Sunday.
