  1. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 6, 2012 -> 10:14 AM) Solid point except for the small fact that Garcia was the only one that panned out. That still doesnt change the fact that talent can be acquired. And the Jury is still out on Peavy. Obviously he has a lot of ground to make up, but his start has been nothing short of awesome. i honestly dont think Jackson was that bad either, he had some really stellar starts Plus, there have been diamonds in the rough like Loaiza, Contreras, and Humber that have shown up and provided some really good innings for the Sox. My point is there is a lot of "OMG we are done forever and it will never get better" posts that are all based on the decision to move Sale to the bullpen right now. It hasnt been decided for the duration of his career, just right now. And who knows, maybe there is an about face on Sale and he comes back to the rotation sooner than we think.
  2. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 6, 2012 -> 09:47 AM) we have no minor league system from which to cultivate two starting pitchers we have no minor league system from which to deal for two starting pitchers we have no major league pieces with friendly enough contracts to deal for two starting pitchers we have absolutely zero track record on drafting decent players, and even if we did, that would be a couple years off. the reality is, we're not going to be competitive for the next couple years. and that bums me out. This has been said pretty much every season since KW has been the GM, yet somehow he has been able to trade for proven starters like Peavy, Jackson, Garcia, Vazquez, etc. Somehow the Sox minors doesnt look as bad to opposing GMs as it does to us, weird.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ May 6, 2012 -> 09:50 AM) Again, totally agree. The package we gave up for Swisher wasn't the bad part of the deal. It was the seemingly lack of scouting at his ability to play CF/leadoff and whether or not he'd get along with the core group of veterans in the clubhouse and Ozzie. Obviously we will never know the truth, but to me it seems pretty obvious that Swisher didnt fit in and it carried over to the field. That is a personality scouting issue. When Swisher was acquired i really dont remember many people complaining about the price
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ May 6, 2012 -> 09:43 AM) KW and company have done a good job of being proactive in trading some of their young player if they feel the player is never going to live up to their potential. It's pretty obvious they had concerns about Sweeney developing power, Olivo struggling to call a game, etc. I have no problem with selling high on young players, especially in a system that has really struggled to develop home-grown offensive players. This is also why it stinks that our minor league system is so bad now, as it gives Kenny a lot fewer bullets to use to obtain Major League pieces. Olivo should NEVER be counted as a loss. Freddy Garcia was well worth the price paid
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 6, 2012 -> 09:42 AM) Who KW allowed Ozzie to talk him into letting go, when it probably made the biggest difference in deciding the 2010 ALCD. A good GM doesn't let his manager dictate his roster, the GM exerts his will on the manager (see Beane vs. Howe). GMAFB Caulfield. 4 years after he was acquired. You dont then count Gio as a loss because Ozzie is a f***ing idiot and didnt want to keep Thome
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 6, 2012 -> 09:38 AM) But that's kind of accepting the same type of mentality that we don't have the patience to wait on 99.8% of the players we draft to develop. We've never had a Gooden, Strawberry or Harper that was ready to dominate from the get-go. Of course, in my mind, there's a difference between Ryan Sweeney and Morel. Sweeney has/had higher upside, we just didn't have nearly enough time to wait for the strength/power to come into his game. But he always had that pretty swing, the talent and ability was there at least. And maybe he'll never be anything more than a lesser version of Mark Grace but in RF, but he's definitely playing a major role on the Red Sox and carrying a 933 OPS through regular play. We traded Ryan Sweeney when he was still just 22 years old. Brent Morel is already 25. Not at all Caulfield, it is accepting that you have to give something of value(Gio, Sweeney, etc) to get something of value(Thome, Swisher). Im sure you werent sitting there b****ing about being patient with Gio when Thome was hitting his game 163 homerun over the batters eye. Sometimes prospects pan out, sometimes they dont. If a prospect pans out 5 years after the trade is made, you dont hold that against the GM. now Hudson for Jackson, well that is a different story. Hudson made an immediate impact at the major league level and it was extremely shortsighted. But those other trades you are complaining about are just ridiculous. What has Ryan Sweeney really done at the major league level that makes you regret that he isnt in the system? The guy has a career .286 batting average with no power(14 career HR!!!), has gotten over 50 RBi once and has been on the DL many times. Hell, the guy has never played over 134 games, and averages 70 games a season. And what, this is the guy you want as your corner outfielder?
  7. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 6, 2012 -> 12:28 AM) And then greg will complain that the White Sox are being cheap and disloyal after trashing him for the last 2 years or so. I'll admit. I've been hard on Peavy as well. But unless he's willing to take a big f***ing pay-cut (or a deal with a bevy of incentives), I don't want to see him back next year. At all. I like that you said "bevy"
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 6, 2012 -> 09:32 AM) Michael Morse. That's why KW should be fired. Not Jeremy Reed. Cowley, Marty and Greg Walker predicted he would breakout as a 30/100 guy a decade ago. And just think, all the guy needed was to roid up and bounce around the minors for 5 years as well
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ May 6, 2012 -> 09:32 AM) Yep, just like with Gio, it's pretty far-fetched to think that KW would have waited long enough for McCarthy to turn into a solid MLB pitcher. I remember watching Gio in his first year in Oakland, and it wasn't pretty at all. Gio also brought back Jim Thome, I would have KW make that trade again in a heartbeat
  10. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ May 6, 2012 -> 09:28 AM) John Danks has years of service with the White Sox and has racked up 16 fWAR. You can't compare the two at all. Again, you're going to have more players lost than added over time if the only players you count as added are the ones on the current roster. Not to mention it took McCarthy 5 years before he finally put it together
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 5, 2012 -> 07:13 AM) I'll take knightni's list and expand upon it (in another irony, Richard and Buehrle faced each other last night while our future Randy Johnson's career prospects careened rapidly downhill) KW lost/traded: Chris Young Gio Gonzalez Clayton Richard Daniel Hudson Edwin Jackson David Holmberg (#7 prospect in DBacks system) Brian Goodwin, OF (#5 prospect in a deep Nationals system) compensation for Dunn Alex Meyer, RHP (#6 prospect in a deep Nationals system) compensation for Dunn Mark Buehrle Sergio Santos Nick Swisher Ryan Sweeney Fautino DeLosSantos Javy Vazquez Jason Frasor Jim Thome This list is hilarious. How can you hold against KW the draft picks that were acquired as compensation for Dunn? Just because of their ranking within the organization? De Los Santos? He of the 33 major league innings and blown out elbow? Holmberg has never been in the bigs. There are plenty of reasons that KW could lose his job, but this list is a joke
  12. I dont know Marty, it is really hard to tell within this large vacuum that everyone is making predictions from
  13. QUOTE (Tex @ May 6, 2012 -> 08:39 AM) And we dislike Cowley why the green? it is true
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 6, 2012 -> 08:19 AM) That's exactly what I was thinking, too...Because this is the exact roster we will have for the next 7 years. Well we both know Kenny never trades anyone, and he always has the same roster. With caulfields predictions of doom and death, and fathom's worrisome assessment of Robin Ventura through 26 games, and Marty needing to trade everyone and anyone, we should really start to think about the Sox quitting the AL and moving to the Independent league.
  15. You know what we should do? We should project everything based on what happened two days ago and expect nothing else to happen, ever. that is what we should do.
  16. It sucks for mark that he has to go the distance to get a win
  17. Yea I definitely see Jones in the 7th and then 8th inning relief roles in the future if he has found his command. He throws 98 mph like it is nothing.
  18. QUOTE (Jake @ May 5, 2012 -> 08:31 PM) Nate Jones and his 98mph fastball AND superior offspeed pitches have something to say about that I think Nate Jones has been pretty good, but iirc he had a lot of control issues in the minors. I would rather Reed do the job that he did all through college.
  19. So they said that ball, which cleared the bleachers, went 422 feet. The Centerfield fence is 420 feet from home plate. There is no way in hell that ball went only 422 feet
  20. 422 feet???? STFU
  21. Papa Grande no dancy today
  22. Wow Dunn. Holy s***
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 5, 2012 -> 05:18 PM) Send BOTH of those guys to Charlotte if Morel is THAT bad. Might as well play Dallas McPherson or Conor Jackson. Seems that Morel's shaky confidence has already been destroyed, regardless. You would play Conor Jackson at 3rd? Lol, ok.
  24. Tim McCarver is such an idiot. I can't even blame his mistakes on old age, he has always been like this.
  25. The world has ended. I love lamp. That is all.
